ExTENDING THE ExpERIENCEBRING IT TO LIFE. . . IT’S ALIIIvE!Provide your students the opportunity to mash-up a radio drama script and graphic novel art in the style of THE INTERGALACTIC NEMESIS!

Materials: Large Poster Board; Radio Drama Script; Markers

For this activity, your students will need to utilize one of the scripts they’ve created throughout this unit. They may choose: (1) The LIVING COMIC BOOKS script from the INSIDE section of the NEW VICTORY School Tool Resource Guide; (2) The script from the Classroom Workshop; (3) the WHAT HAPPENS NEXT?! script from the AFTER section; (4) the ACOUSTIC ADAPTATION script from the AFTER section.

1. In small groups of four, instruct the students to storyboard their script into four visual panels. Provide each group with a piece of paper, and draw four comic book squares to sketch their ideas. It should look like this:

2. Encourage them to break down the script into visual moments and decide: which would be the most interesting to see.(Utilize the skills explored in the LIVING COMIC BOOKS activity in the INSIDE section).

3. Once their script is storyboarded into four visual moments ask the groups to assign one panel to each student to draw in a large format on poster board. Each student should be in charge of fully designing one panel. They can use the handout (next page) for suggestions on ways to draw speech and thought balloons, captions, and sound effects.

4. After the students have designed their four panels ask the groups to lay the panels out on the floor in a row.

5. Allow the groups time to review their script and decide how to perform it vocally (e.g. who will read each part, how the sound effects will be created, etc.).

6. Give each group the opportunity to perform their script as their panels are displayed one at a time, just like in the show (you can ask for some student volunteers from the other groups to hold the panels while the script is performed).

7. Help each group bring their radio play comic to life!

MODIFICATION: If you have an overhead projector in your classroom you can provide each student with a transparency to design their panel. While each group performs their scene in front of the class their artwork can be projected behind them, just like in the show.

Have a conversation about their trip to the theater.

Talking about live performance is an important part of your kid’s learning, and it deepens and extends the original experience. Engaging in dialogue, asking questions and recalling observations are skills that you can help foster! You might ask:

• What was it like to take a trip to Times Square? What did you see?• What was it like to see a comic book performed on stage?• How did they create all of the sound effects?• Did the heroes defeat the Zygonians?

?!

Your child’s class saw a performance of

at The New Victory Theater on 42nd Street, New York’s theater for kids and families.

RESOuRCE FOR FAMILIESTo extend the experience, you may consider some of the following suggestions:
