Excited to start the day!

North East Program Genesis Centre

Exciting News for our Northeast members!Between Friends has partnered up with the Genesis Centre within 1000 Voices and we are currently designing programming for the NE quadrant of Calgary. Programs and recreational activities will be held at the Genesis Centre, a community wellness center.

Special thanks to the following partners for the funding to start this programming!

Page 13: Between Friends spring summer guide 2014

12spring & summer programs 2014

Program information will be made available to you once we have a better understanding of the needs and interests of our members, partners and agencies. Please stay tuned!

For further information, please email [email protected].

In addition to serving a much more culturally diverse population, programming will also take into account the demographic factors that are unique to the North of McKnight communities; including but not limited to Castleridge, Falconridge, Martindale, Saddleridge and Taradale.

Within these communities, people are eager to feel a sense of belonging. However, there are some barriers that residents may face. By creating programming specifically designed for our members who live in northeast Calgary, some of these barriers may be reduced.

Mission of the Genesis Centre

“To support community-based recreation, sport, cultural and social organizations that enrich the quality of life and character of the broader community through a facility that is financially self-sustaining and professionally managed.”

www.genesis-centre.ca

Make new friends!

If you are interested in a community activity that is not offered through Between Friends’ programming or want to be involved with your peers in a new activity, then I.C.A.N! might be for you.

I.C.A.N! is suitable for Between Friends members of all ages who would like to explore inclusion in community recreation. Members strive for independent participation in community programs at the facility of your choosing.

Special thanks to our program partner!

Page 15: Between Friends spring summer guide 2014

14spring & summer programs 2014

A Between Friends’ Inclusion Leader will be at the facility providing guidance to the Between Friends’ member and offering training to the program instructor and program participants on inclusion, if necessary.

I.C.A.N! Anywhere Any community program has the potential to be an I.C.A.N! Program. I.C.A.N! Programs are any recreation or leisure activity in our community in which you might be interested. Any Leisure Centre or Recreation Centre, private dance studio, gym, art studio or swimming pool can be a facility for an I.C.A.N! experience.

Between Friends has partnered with various recreational facilities to include programs such as Hip-Hop and Zumba Dance, Drawing, Badminton, Ballet, Swimming, Hockey and Pottery. Programs run throughout all quadrants of Calgary and the surrounding area.

Cost The only cost is the program fee charged by the facility you register with.

I.C.A.N.! Registration and Information We want our members to be successful, so if you are thinking of registering in a community program, please call us immediately. This will allow us to connect with the facility to see what type of support they may need to ensure an inclusive experience.

To begin the registration process for the community program you or your member may be interested in, contact our Membership Coordinator, Garret Dawson, at 403 508 0117. Cieran & Liam at Telus Spark

Between Friends is very excited to be hosting our 1st Annual Friends in Motion: Bowl-A-Thon! All funds raised from this event will directly support the quality programming we offer for children, youth, and adults with disabilities. This is a new and exciting event to complement our Friends in Motion event held each winter.

The Bowl-A-Thon is a team based event. Teams of 4 will partner up with 2 Between Friends participants and take to the alley and compete against each other for the best bowling score and the most funds raised in support of Between Friends. The entry fee for this event is $1,000.00, but teams are encouraged to challenge themselves and their peers to raise more for Between Friends. Every strike, spare, or gutter ball goes a long way to ensure that Between Friends creates opportunities for an inclusive atmosphere for our members.
