Quick facts
Diet: Carnivore
Life span in the wild: 10 years
Size: Length - 2.3 – 3 m
Weight: 135 - 225 kg
Status: Endangered
The Bengal tiger (Panthera tigris tigris) is the largest of the big cats. A male tiger can
weigh up to 225 kg and a female up to 135 kg. Unlike lions, tigers live alone. They use
their striped fur to camouflage them among the trees, allowing them to ambush their
prey. They stalk their prey and pounce as they are not able to run for long distances.
Tigers feed on buffalo, antelopes, deer, wild pigs, and other large mammals and can eat
up to 30 kg of meat in one night. There are no two tigers with identical stripes.
In the wild, tigers can live up to 10 years of age.
A female tiger will give birth to a litter of two to six cubs and will stay with them for two
to three years.
Bengal tigers are an endangered species due to hunting and habitat loss. They are used
by hunters as trophies, and also in traditional Chinese medicine.
Today there are less than 3,000 Bengal tigers left in the wild. They can be found in
tropical rainforests, marsh lands and grasslands in India.
