EXCHANGING THE RINGS

Exchanging rings is not only a symbolic and poignant gesture of two lives merging, it's anotheropportunity to add a personal, stylish touch to your big day. Having a little one carry a traditional

pillow is no longer the only way for your ring to arrive (though, it is hard to elicit the same kind of

"oohs and ahhs" a ring bearer inspires when he walks down the aisle).

• Man's Best Friend If your dog is an essential part of your life, why shouldn't he be in the wed-

ding party?

• Branch-ed Together In many cultures, the branch is a deep-rooted symbol. Though the ex-

change of rings is not a tradition in a Greek wedding, having the rings brought out on an olive

branch is a great way to put a modern spin on old traditions. The same can be done with a lus-

cious grape vine.

• Under Your Nose Sometimes the best solution for a ring arrival is no procession at all. There

are many creative ways for your rings to rest during the ceremony. If you're having a beach

wedding, the rings can sit beautifully in an abalone shell. Using flowers can be a great alterna-

tive: pomander balls have the look and feel of a pillow but are a chic way to keep the rings in

place.

Passed Around For smaller weddings, passing around the rings is a beautiful and intimate ges-

ture. Have your ushers pass the weddings bands around so your guests can touch them, symboli-

cally handing their love and good wishes to you through the passing of the ring

It's amazing how quickly a mood can change with the flip of a switch or strike of a match.Lighting is one of the most important tools we have to create ambiance and no matter your budget, you can transport your guests from ethereal to romantic to

dramatic all within the same space.

"Making dramatic lighting can mean anything from the right placement of candles or stringing carnival lights in trees to lighting a walkway with colourful LED orbs.

When it comes to lighting for your wedding, think first about the mood. Would you like it tofeel festive as soon as guests walk into the reception? Consider colour. A rich, royal pur-ple or shades of blue can create an electric atmosphere.

Want romance? For a ceremony or an intimate reception, think of candlelight as your main light source. "Use lots of candles. Clusters of pillar candles, for venues that don't al-

low candles with real flames, there are multitudes of battery operated candle optionsavailable.

And think beyond the obvious when it comes to candleholders. The vessels you use willalso affect the mood, centrepieces made with clusters of various sized candles and hold-ers, think big and small. Time to start thinking about setting the date. Choosing a date for your wedding can be tricky (anexisting date that already has significance) balanced against financialconsideration (choosing to have your wedding on a Sunday afternoon versus a Friday eveningfor example), and of course who can and possibly can't attend.

As you're deciding which date is right for you, keep in mind these six things:

• Vacation days. If it's not possible to take off longer than a week for your wedding and honey-

moon, you might want to plan your honeymoon for a later date. Don't forget to keep in mindany large work projects and the seasons—packed hotels and hard to get air flights during peak summer months aren't uncommon.

• Available dates at your venue of choice. If there's a venue you already have your heart seton, it's important to call and check right away if the date you have in mind is available. Somevenues get booked more than a year in advance, so if you're on a tight planning timeline, your "venue of choice" may need an alternate.

• Coordinating ceremony & reception sites. It's always best to have your ceremony and recep-tion around the same location, but it's not always possible! So, if you're your ceremony and reception are being held in different places, don't write a check for one beforeconfirming availability at the other.

• Holidays. If you're thinking about scheduling your wedding around a holiday—beware ofcosts—it can possibly cost more for the venue and vendors. A busy time of year is basic supplyand demand on pricing—for you and your guests.•

•

Competition. There are only 52 Friday and Saturday evenings in a year and thecompetition for venues and vendors can be fierce. Consider an alternate—Thursday eveningcocktails, Saturday lunch or Sunday brunch can be just as chic. And then there's the family, keepin mind any other big events happening (i.e. your grandparents golden anniversary, your father'smilestone birthday, or maybe someone else in your family isgetting married too!)

• Weather worries. If you're dream is for an outdoor ceremony with the sun setting in the back-ground—have an alternate plan, mother nature may not cooperate.

Once you've taken all of the above into consideration, you'll be left with a date that may seem

far away but will be here before you know it. Now starts the fun of nailing down the details.
