Tate,whowascoachedbyNortheastalumniCraigDaileyatMarshallAcademy,knewthatbyhavingDaileyasacoach,theTigerswerewherehewantedtocontinuehisplayingcareer.

“CoachDailey,heplayedatNortheastandtoldmeaboutCoach(Da-vid)Robbins,”Tatesaid.“Igotachance to talkwithCoachRob-binsandIlikedthecoachingstaffwith Coach (Maurice) Staffordhere.”

Johnson,who played at PineGrove High School and claimsHinkle as a hometown, the de-cision tocome toNortheastwaseasierthanTate’sdecision.

“It’sclosetomyhometown,”Johnson said. “It’s not far frommyhouseanditgavemetheop-portunitytoplaybasketball.”

Adesire for awinning tradi-tioncamefrombothJohnsonandTate’srespectivehighschools.

JohnsonhelpedleadtheLadyPantherstotheMississippiHighSchool Activities Association’s

(MHSAA)Class1AStateTournamentinJacksonduringherjunioryearandPineGroveestablishedadesiretowininJohnsonearlyonbystartingherfreshmanyear13-0andhersophomoreyear18-0beforerecordingitsfirstlossoftheyear.

DaileymadesureawinningtraditionwasinstilledinTateduringhistimeatMarshallAcademyandduringthe2008season,TatehelpedleadthePatriotstotheMississippiPrivateSchoolAssociation’s(MPSA)ClassAAStateTournamentatIndianolaAcademyafterleadingthePatriotstotheClassAANorthHalfChampionship.

Theopportunityforaqualityeducationandthetotalcollegeexperi-encewasnotlostonTateorJohnson.Whilebothhavemadetheirmarksonthecourt,thetwohavealsojoinedinthefunofcollegelifeenjoying

theactivitiesthatNortheastofferstostudents.Johnsonwas amember of the 2010Homecoming courtwhileTate

said,“ItrytocomealotoftheactivitiesthatNortheasthastoofferandsupportNortheastthebestIcan.”

EventhoughNortheastoffersawidevarietyofactivitiesawayfromthehardwood,it isonthecourtwhereJohnsonandTatespendmostoftheirtimeatthecollege.

“IhavetobealeaderandbemorematurethanIwaslastyear,”Tatesaid.“Thefreshmanarecomingupandweneedtohelpshowthemwhattodoandwhatcoachneedsthemtodoforustowin.”

Johnson, a guard, had to getused to getting a shot off in acertainamountoftimewhenshecame to Northeast but over thelast year, that problem has beenrectified.

“I havemore experience andI learned a lot,” Johnson saidabouther freshmanyear. “Ithastaughtmethespeedofthegameandwiththeshotclock,itisalotdifferent from playing in highschool.”

ForTate,thechallengeissim-ple; “We are working hard andtakingitonegameatatime.Ourgoalsare towin theNorthDivi-sionandgettoHutchinson,Kan-sas(NationalTournament).”

“Wehavetocometogetherasateamandlearnasateam,”Johnsonsaid. “No game is going to be perfect and we have to improve everygame.”

Both philosophies lead to the same result of awinning tradition atNortheastandwithTateandJohnson,DavidRobbins’TigersandRickyFord’sLadyTigersarepoisedforsuccess.

That success from bothTate and Johnson has been evident asTatedrainedthewinningshotagainstHolmesCommunityCollegeduringhisfreshmanyearwhileJohnsonandtheLadyTigersknockedoffItawambaCommunityCollegeinfrontofapackedBonnerArnoldColiseumherfirstyearatNortheast.
