A D E L P H I U n i v e r s i t y 1 Baseball NCAA’s 2009 2009 NCAA Baseball East Region PANTHERS BACK IN NCAA’ S 2005 marked a resurgence in Adelphi’s baseball program. The late 90’s was a high point for the team as they appeared in the Regional Tournament for half of the de- cade, capping it off with a Regional win and advancing to the second round of the College World Series in 1999. The high was followed by a six year dip, reaching a low in 2003 marked by a 7-30 record until current head coach, Dom Scala, took over the helm at the season’s conclusion from Hall of Fame coach, Ron Davies, and turned the program around. In just two quick years, the Panthers were back on the NCAA scene as the #3 seed in the 2005 Regional Tournament and again in 2007 with the #2 spot. This is the 15th Regional appearance for the squad after ending the regular season in impressive fashion. The team is on their way to accomplishing their three goals, two of which have been reached; winning the regular season as well as the ECC Tourna- ment. Winning the Region and advancing would be considered a fantastic season if the Panthers can outlast strong opponents in #1 Dominican, #2 Franklin Pierce, #4 Dowling, #5 Assumption and #6 Wilmington (Delaware). The team has had some notable improvements in various categories compared to last year’s squad. As a team, their batting average increased from .257 to .273 while the number of strikeouts decreased by 64. Additionally, they scored more runs per game, increasing from 4.14 to 4.7. While the defense has remained consistently strong, the bullpen, despite the loss of Bobby Lani- gan to the big leagues, has improved. The throwers have kept their op- ponent’s batting average to .235, better than last year’s .244 and also allowed fewer hits, 340 compared to 403. Lastly, the runs allowed per game have significantly dropped over the past year from 4.38 to 3.42. All of these statistical improvements have not only made the team bet- ter on paper, but on the field as well. Heading into the ECC Tournament as the #1 seed bettered the conference expectations as they were tabbed #4 in the preseason poll. They made quick work of their first round foes, Dowling College as they easily won 6-1. St. Thomas Aquinas proved a tougher matchup as the Adelphi mar- gin of victory was only a single run as they outlasted the Spartans 3-2. Facing the Golden Lions again in the ECC Championship game, the Panthers won handily as they put away Dowling yet again, the second time in three days, by a score of 11-0. The schedule saw ECC honors awarded to a select few along the way in Ryan Boelsen and Keith Couch. ECC Player of the Week, Boelsen leads the team in hits with 60, doubles with 13 and RBI with 37 while starting 41 games behind the plate as a very solid and reli- able catcher. Couch, an ECC Pitcher of the Week honoree, sports an extremely im- pressive 1.33 era, 8-1 record, five complete games, and 62 strikeouts in 74.1 innings of work to make him the team’s ace. Both earned First Team All-ECC honors. Not to be outdone, Bill Melillo and Robert Paccione earned Second Team honors while teammates Chris Weidlein and Matthew Kenney rounded out the All-Conference team with Third Team honors. Melillo capped off the accolades by being named the Tournament MVP as he went 11-15 in the last three games. Coincidentally, the first three games of the tournament will feature rematches of each conference’s respective championship game. Adelphi will play Dowling out of the ECC while the Assumption Greyhounds will face the Ravens of Franklin Pierce in Northeast-10 (NE-10)action. Rounding out the first round will be the Dominican Chargers and the Wildcats of Wilmington (DE) out of the Central Athletic Col- legiate Conference (CACC). Adelphi, Franklin Pierce and Wilmington were each conference winners. The Panthers will have the late game at 6pm on Thursday, May 14 after the CACC and NE-10 games duke it out first. E a s t C o a s t C o n f e r e n c eThe East Coast Conference (ECC) entered a new and exciting era on July 1, 2006, when it adopted a new name and branding, reflective of the growth the league has experienced since debuting as the New York Collegiate Athletic Conference nearly 20 years ago. The ECC is the offspring of several single-sport college conferences which existed in the New York City Metropolitan area in the 1960’s, 70’s and 80’s. It is a direct descendant of the Big Apple Basketball Conference, which was a Men’s Division II conference with six members: C.W. Post, Queens, Southampton, Mercy, Concor-dia, and Dowling. In 1988, the athletic directors of C.W. Post and Queens invited the athletic direc-tors of all Division II institutions in the New York Metropolitan area to discuss the forming of one multi-sport conference administered by member athletic directors to encourage all local teams to compete against each other in a ll sports where there were at least six teams. It was hoped that the number of teams in each sport would rise as would the quality of play. After several meetings, it was generally agreed that a multi-sport conference was a good idea and the New York Collegiate Athletic Conference was formed. Its charter members were: Adelphi, Concordia, C.W. Post, Dowling, Mercy, Molloy, N.Y.I.T, Pace, Queens and Southampton. The convenience of scheduling, the reduction of costs, the rising quality of play and the camaraderie of the schools led to the growth of the conference. The multi-sport nature of the conference helped to attract the College of St. Rose and Phila-delphia Textile (now Philadelphia University) in 1991 and New Jersey Institute of Technology in 1997 which expanded the geographic scope of the NYCAC. This encouraged its existing members to participate in all sports sponsored by the NY-CAC. The original intercollegiate competition consisted of round robin play in

men’s basketball, softball, baseball, and soccer with tournaments held for men and women’s tennis, men and women’s cross-country, and men’s golf. The ECC currently sponsors baseball; men and women’s cross country; men and women’s lacrosse, men and women’s basketball; men and women’s soccer; men and women’s tennis; and volleyball. The University of Bridgeport and St. Thomas Aquinas College replaced NJIT and St. Rose in 2000. In October 2001 the University of New Haven was of-fered membership effective September, 2002. The departure of Philadelphia, New Haven and the dissolution of the LIU-South-ampton campus has left the ECC membership at 10.
