EXPERIENTIAL EDGE

Barry Law prepares you to walk out of the classroom and into the courtroom. The legaltheories taught by Barry’s distinguished faculty are then put into practice through ournationally recognized advocacy teams, clinical opportunities, externships, and journals.

Advocacy ProgramsThrough the Moot Court Board, an invitational organization for upper-division students, you can practice effective and persuasive brief writing and oral advocacy in the appellatesetting before a panel of judges.

“Moot court is recognized by many judges as a very academic endeavor,” says Professor TerriDay. “Students are presented with very complicated cases and have to learn the area of law, write the brief, and be knowledgeable and quick-thinking in oral arguments when the judgesquestion them.”

You can sharpen litigation skills on the championship-caliber trial team, which competesacross the country against other top law schools in competitions held by influential organi-zations such as the Florida Bar and the American Association for Justice.

Barry’s trial team has emerged as one of the nation’s elite, winning championships at sevennational competitions since 2008, including the ABA Quinnipiac National Trial AdvocacyCompetition and defeating Harvard University in the finals of the 2012 ABA NationalCriminal Justice Trial Advocacy Competition.

“Trial team gave me confidence in thecourtroom,” says Margalie Fenelus ’11,former president of the trial team.“Learning evidence, learning how toproperly respond to objections, how tomake closing arguments, how to put on atrial — these are great tools for alitigator to have in his or her arsenal.”

Learn By DoingClinical placements provide hands-on experience in many different legal settings. As a lawstudent, you will seek certification by the Florida Supreme Court as a Certified Legal Intern. The options for placement include three clinical alternatives (Children and Families, EarthAdvocacy, and Immigration) or six externship options (Public Defender, Prosecution,Mediation, Judicial, Civil Government, and Civil Poverty).

Professional responsibilities in the clinics and externships include trying real-life civil andcriminal cases, advising clients, interviewing witnesses, and preparing all forms of legaldocuments. In each domain, professors give you an experiential edge.

“Our clinics and externships give students the opportunity to take the advocacy skills theyhave learned in the classroom and apply them to real cases,” says Professor Gerry Glynn.

JournalsBarry’s academic journals provide you with the opportunity to polish your analytical andwriting skills.

The Barry Law Review is a biannual journal edited and published by students in the top10 percent of the class as well as students awarded a position on the journal after successfullycompeting in a writing competition.
