INTRODUCING BANSTEAD DOWNS

Banstead Downs is a Members’ Golf Club, founded in 1890. We combine pride in our long traditions with a determination to move the club forward, as demonstrated by our recent investment of over £1 million in course and clubhouse improvements.

The Course is a superb James Braid design with superb greens and a remarkable resilience to poor weather. It has challenged golfers for 120 years and is now even better, with the recent improvements having extended the yardage to 6,581, with a Standard Scratch of 72.

The Clubhouse Development has provided us with an entirely new golfers’ lounge and a separate and completely refurbished dining and function area with its own bar. This area can be opened up for major events or divided into discrete smaller areas for other functions.

THE COURSE

Banstead Downs Golf Course winds its way across the fast draining chalk down, which makes it extraordinarily tolerant of wet weather. The course is often playable when many others are not, and temporary greens are almost unheard of.

The greens at Banstead have a deserved reputation for year-round excellence, being relatively fast but always fair. Together with the undulating fairways and the variety of challenges including the recently relocated bunkers, they make it a wonderful place for players of all levels to enjoy a round of golf in natural surroundings.

The extended course opened in May 2010, with the extent from 6,195 to 6,581 yards. The course Par has risen from 69 to 71, and the Standard Scratch Score from 69 to 72. Furthermore, more than 30 bunkers were removed, added or re-located to present new challenges and to reflect the distances achieved with modern golfing equipment.

Members and guests also benefit from a full practice facility, chipping and short iron area plus a large practice putting green.

THE CLUBHOUSE

The newly renovated and furbished clubhouse was opened in 2010 and offers superb, modern and spacious facilities. The clubhouse is new, but the same warm greeting awaits you from all of our hospitable staff. We welcome both members and visitors to enjoy all that is on offer.

Relax in the sumptuous lounge of the new Conservatory Bar or sit in the sun on the deck and enjoy a coffee from our versatile bean to cup coffee machine which produces the best espressos, lattes, cappuccinos and more. The display counters at the bar are filled with an assortment of hot and cold treats.

The new facilities offer outstanding versatility, allowing us to cater for functions and events from small intimate parties to large banquets, entirely separate from the ‘Golfers’ Conservatory Bar. MEMBERSHIP

Banstead Downs is a Members’ Club, so is managed for the benefit of Members. Above all, perhaps, our Members enjoy the relaxed and friendly atmosphere which runs through all playing and social activities.

We do not use a tee-booking system except for Club Competitions and Matches, all of which are clearly communicated through our website and notice-boards, so Members and Visitors can come and play without pre-booking.

There is a wide range of both weekend and mid-week Club Competitions for all sections of the club. We also play a range of Matches, some in competitive Leagues and Knock-Out Events, others as more relaxed ‘friendly’ matches against our long-standing friends in other local clubs. All Members are welcome to participate.

We also run a wide range of Social Events, ranging from Burns Nights, New Year and Christmas Parties and Candlelit Dinners to Jazz Evenings, Supper & Quiz nights and even an annual Golf Rules quiz.

Our main playing categories are for Full and 5-day Members, equally available to Gentleman and Lady Members.

We also have special Membership Categories for Juniors, Country Members, Academy Members and Social (non-playing) Members.

Academy Membership includes professional coaching, use of the course at certain times and full Social membership. It is designed for inexperienced golfers who are taking up the game, many of whom will progress to full membership.

JUNIORSThe section is open to boys and girls between the ages of 8 and 18, and we welcome new members including inexperienced players.

The juniors section is a very active and important part of our golf club and former junior members include not only our European Tour player, Ross McGowan, but also the reigning club champion, the current club Captain and the Chairman of the Management Committee.

Our organisers provide a range of opportunities to help new juniors to develop their enjoyment of the game of golf, and to feel part of the section. The activities include a set of training programmes run every year aimed at improving playing skills.

We organise a roll-up event once a week during the summer, so that juniors can just turn up and play with others in the group, in part to encourage the newer players to work up to competitions. There is also a roll-up prize for the player returning the best eclectic score over the season (they take their best score on each hole over the season, to create their composite best round).

JUNIORS CONTINUED...

Internal competitions are led by the Order of Merit, which runs throughout the year and is keenly contested, with the top two players being rewarded with an entry into our Pro Am event in July. The finalists in the Singles Knock-Out qualify for a free entry in the Assistant Professional/Vice-Captain Challenge.

In addition to several internal competitions, our juniors enjoy the opportunity to experience competitive matches by representing the club in external competitions including the Kingston League, the Keppler League, the East Surrey Masters and the Fairways Trophy.

Both are an extremely important part of the team at Banstead Downs providing a warm welcome to visitors, excellent advice on equipment and a very high standard of coaching. ROSS MCGOWANOur best known golfer is unquestionably Ross McGowan, who joined the club as a Junior and who in due course progressed through the amateur ranks and the Challenge Tour on to the European Tour. Ross won the Madrid Masters in 2009 with a score of 25 under par, including a stunning third round of 60.

Ross had reached the pinnacle of English Amateur golf in 2006 when he beat Oliver Wilson in the final to become the English Amateur Champion, a title previously held by stars such as Nick Faldo and Paul Casey. This was the first of many proud days for Banstead Downs, and he was unanimously elected to Honorary Life Membership.

Ross went on to finish 2nd on the 2007 Challenge Tour, thereby qualifying for the main European Tour in 2008, when he finished 70th in the order of Merit. He went on to his first tour victory, in Madrid in 2009, then came 2nd in the season’s finale in Dubai, where he played the last two rounds with the eventual Dubai and Order of Merit winner, Lee Westwood.

Ross managed to reach 77th place in the 2010 Order of Merit despite several troubling injuries, and we look forward to following his progress in 2011.

THE COURSE CHANGESAll the major course developments previously mentioned came into play in 2010 and are already maturing rapidly.

They include converting the old 16th hole to a Par 4, which gives us the option to use it as the starting hole in future. If we make this change, the holes thereafter will be played in the same order as before, meaning that the old 15th would become the new 18th and final hole. The Members will make a decision on this early in 2011.

The most significant individual changes we have introduced, using the old hole numbers, are:-

1st HOLE – where the construction of a new length of uphill fairway and a new green extended the already-challenging 410 yard Par 4 into a simply magnificent 551 yard Par 5.

2nd HOLE – with the construction of a set of new tees adjacent to the new first green, changing a straight 308 yard Par 4 into a demanding dogleg of 393 yards, leading to the original and unique sunken green.

THE COURSE CHANGES CONTINUED...

14th HOLE – where the construction of a new back tee lengthened this very distinctive par 5 of 546 yards to 577 yards, and where the addition of three fairway bunkers towards the green adds both aesthetic appeal and significant extra challenge

15th HOLE – where another new back tee extended this Par 4 dogleg from 430 to 455 yards, making it a formidable proposition, with several strategically placed bunkers and a tricky sloping green.

16th HOLE – which has been converted from a long par 3 into a short and fairly tight par 4 through the construction of new back tees. Take on the crocs bunkers if you dare!

We have also de-commissioned numerous bunkers which were inappropriate for modern equipment, and introduced many new ones. Some of these are effectively the re-positioning of those removed, others strengthen both the visual and appeal and golfing challenge, such as the angled line of three fairway bunkers on the 14th and the pair of bunkers short of the 5th green.

Both Members and Visitors love the changes – we hope you get the opportunity to try them for yourself!
