LAST WEEK: BAL. 10 - NYJ 9

The Ravens spoiled the grand opening of the Jets’ New Meadow-lands Stadium with a 10-9 victory last Monday night. Baltimore took a 7-6 halftime lead on RB Willis McGahee’s 1-yard touchdown plunge with six seconds left in the second quarter. K Billy Cundiff’s 25-yard field goal in the third quarter provided the winning points. The Ravens’ defense was stout throughout the game, limiting the Jets to 3 K Nick Folk field goals (23, 28 and 48 yards). Baltimore’s LB Ray Lewis and Co. held New York to 176 yards (60 yards pass-ing). The Jets converted just 1 of 11 third-down attempts, while the Ravens were a respectable 11-of-19. The Ravens held the Jets to a New York franchise-tying-low six first downs. WR Anquan Boldin, playing his first game with the Ravens, caught 7 passes for 110 yards. TE Todd Heap grabbed 6 for 72 more yards. QB Joe Flacco completed 20 of 38 for 248 yards. New York committed 14 penalties, including 10 in the first half, to the Ravens’ five infrac-tions. Baltimore held the ball 38:32 to the Jets’ 21:28.

NOTE OF THE WEEK I

Since their 2000 Super Bowl campaign, the Ravens have compiled a 21-12 record in the opening month of the season (fourth-best mark in the NFL). Under John Harbaugh, the Ravens are 6-1 in the month of September, including 2-1 on the road.

NFL’S BEST OPENING-MONTH RECORDS(Since 2000)

Rk. Team Record Pct. 1. Indianapolis Colts 26-7 .788 2. Denver Broncos 25-11 .694 3. New York Giants 23-11 .676 4. Baltimore Ravens 21-12 .636 5. Seattle Seahawks 21-13 .618

CBSSports.com’s Clark Judge on his expectation of QB Joe Flacco having a noteworthy season: “I like everything about this guy. His demeanor. His arm. His ac-curacy. His toughness. And now I like his receivers. A year ago we said he didn’t have enough of them. Then the Ravens added vet-erans Donte’ Stallworth, Anquan Boldin and T.J. Houshmandza-deh, and, just like that, Air Harbaugh is cleared for takeoff. I can’t imagine the personality of this team changing, but I can imagine Flacco making a difference. Look for his numbers to jump across the board.”

SI.com’s Don Banks on the Ravens’ aggressive mindset:“There’s no other way to read the signing of veteran receiver T.J. Houshmandzadeh but as another indication that Baltimore means business this year. The Ravens are loading up to take their best possible Super Bowl shot, and saw the ex-Bengals receiver as a particularly valuable resource in their quest to overtake Cincin-nati in the AFC North. This is a Baltimore offense poised to hang some very crooked numbers on more than a few folks this season. On defense, the Ravens secondary just needs to hang in there and survive until it’s healthier.”

ESPN.com’s Kevin Seifert on why he picked the Ravens to com-pete for a Super Bowl this year: “The Baltimore Ravens might have the most balanced trio of phases — offense, defense and special teams — in the NFL. In his third season, quarterback Joe Flacco should be considered a sea-soned vet, and he now has an array of weapons that includes re-ceiver Anquan Boldin. The Ravens’ offense should be as explosive as their defense is opportunistic. There have been some concerns about their secondary, but no team in this era is perfect. The Ra-vens have as much going for them as any team in the NFL.”

Scouts Inc. on ranking NT Kelly Gregg and his forceful impact on the Ravens’ defense:“With another productive season in 2009, Gregg continued to be a force in the middle of the Ravens’ defense. Gregg is an 11-year veteran who appears to have not lost quickness or power. He is built low to the ground and very powerful. He is an exceptional hands player who competes with excellent overall aggression. His motor never stops, and his hustle can be infectious. Gregg consis-tently wins one-on-one matchups and can handle a double team while also making plays in the backfield.”

SI.com’s Don Banks on the Ravens’ Monday win over the NY Jets:“The John Harbaugh-coached Ravens proved to me once again they’re a tough-minded and resilient team that doesn’t care who they play and where they play them. Spoiling the Cowboys’ party in the final game at Texas Stadium on a Saturday night in prime-time [in 2008]? No problem. Raining on the big-talking Jets’ pa-rade in their first-ever game at New Meadowlands Stadium? No sweat. Winning on the road in the NFL playoffs? Been there, done that. Thrice in the last two years.”

LB Ray Lewis on maintaining the Ravens’ high standard on defense: “The coach’s job is to give us the playbook and show us what you want to do. But my job is to evaluate my players and get the best out of them — what I know they can do. I think that’s one of my greatest gifts — to be able to [help teammates] pull out of them-selves what they thought they could never do. It’s what I dedicate to the game, to help players around me. It’s been that way from Day One around here — no matter who’s the coach, no matter who’s the coordinator.”

Yahoo!Sports.com’s Michael Silver on ranking the Ravens’ Steve Bisciotti among the NFL’s top 10 owners:“[Steve Bisciotti] has managed to create one of the 21st centu-ry’s more successful franchises while maintaining a killer tan and seemingly enjoying life. Bisciotti’s secret: Employing really smart people (president Dick Cass, general manager Ozzie Newsome) and empowering them to run a directed, philosophically consis-tent operation. Rather than getting bogged down by the Redskins’ obvious advantages in history, branding and marketing might, the Ravens have carved out a niche in the area that allows them to compete at the highest level.”

Ravens secondary coach Chuck Pagano on S Tom Zbikowski:“He’s like that guy that plays [Jason Bourne in] ‘Bourne Identity’… Matt Damon. He’s a steely-eyed assassin. Things don’t affect him. You know those guys whose hands don’t shake when their finger’s on the trigger? He’s one of those guys.”

Head coach John Harbaugh on what DE Cory Redding brings:“Cory’s just a great leader. He’s very mature. He’s really a hun-gry player. He’s a veteran guy that still has that hunger. He’s got a great passion, really works hard, kind of out front with the young-er guys, showing the guys how to be professional in everything they do. Plus, he can play. So, it’s been a real good plus for us.”

“I know Baltimore. I know what these guys bring to the table, because I’ve played against them. I’ve sat in rooms when the coaches had to game-plan against these guys, and I know how stressful it is for those guys, because I’ve been on the opposite side of that and know how much stress that defense puts on people. So, to be on this side and not have to deal with it and worry about what protection is going to pick this up and what protection is going to pick that up, it’s great. I feel like I’m coming to play with guys that are similar with me emotionally, the way they play the game and how they love the game. And that’s where I need to be.”

2010 NFL RANKINGS

2010 Overview: The Bengals began 2010 with a 38-24 loss at New England on Sunday. Cincy is looking to rebound at home from a disappointing defensive performance, as four of the team’s first six contests come on the road. This week, the Bengals host the Ra-vens in the their home opener before traveling to Carolina (9/26) and division rival Cleveland (10/3). The Bengals will then return home to face Tampa Bay (10/10) before their bye in Week 6.

Marvin Lewis: Lewis was named NFL Coach of the Year in 2009 after leading the Bengals to a 10-6 record and an AFC North title. It was their second division crown under Lewis and first since 2005. The Bengals hope to continue strong division play in 2010 after go-ing 6-0 in the North for the first time in franchise history last sea-son. Now in his eighth season at the helm in Cincinnati, Lewis holds a 56-58-1 overall record, including 0-2 in postseason play.

Offense: After a slow start in the first half last Sunday at New England, Pro Bowlers QB Carson Palmer and WR Chad Ochocinco helped Cincy return to form in the second half, scoring 21 of the team’s 24 points. Ochocinco’s 159 receiving yards (1 TD) ranked tops in the league for Week 1, and Palmer’s 34 completions fin-ished second. Newly-acquired veteran WR Terrell Owens added 7 catches on the day, while the team’s top-pick in the 2010 Draft, TE Jermaine Gresham, added 6 receptions for 25 yards and 1 TD.

Defense: The Bengals tied Oakland for the most points allowed in Week 1 (38). New England scored 24 first-half points en route to a 21-point halftime lead. One of the NFL’s top-rated secondaries was targeted by QB Tom Brady, who completed 25 of 35 passes for 258 yards, 3 TDs and 0 INTs (120.9 QB rating).

MILESTONES IN REACH

Two full seasons for John Harbaugh as the Ravens’ head coach and two seasons in the playoffs. (The Ravens have never made the postseason three con-secutive years.) In both seasons under Harbaugh, the Ravens enjoyed playoff success. In his 2008 rookie campaign, the Ravens advanced to the AFC

Championship game after winning at Miami (27-9) and at top-seeded Tennessee, 13-10. Pittsburgh, the eventual Super Bowl champion, stopped the Ravens, 23-14, in the AFC title matchup. In 2009, Baltimore dominated at New England, 33-14, in the Wild Card game before dropping a 20-3 contest at Super Bowl-bound Indianapolis in the Divisional Round.

Harbaugh, who established a reputation as one of the NFL’s top special teams coaches, is the third head coach in team history, following Ted Marchi-broda (1996-98) and Brian Billick (1999-2007). Coach Harbaugh arrived in Balti-more with 24 years of pro and college coaching experience,

including the previous 10 seasons with the Philadelphia Eagles. He was the Eagles’ special teams coach from 1998 through 2006 and headed Philly’s secondary in 2007.

During the Harbaugh Era (2008-present)...• The Ravens have won three road playoff games, with no other NFL team owning more than two (Eagles & Jets) during that span.

• Baltimore is one of only two teams to have won playoff games in each of the past two postseasons (Arizona is the other).

• The Ravens own a 21-12 regular season record. Including play-offs (3-2), the Ravens are 24-14 in the Harbaugh Era, tying for the NFL’s third-most total wins since 2008.

During the 2008 season, John Harbaugh became just the 12th first-year head coach to lead his team to the Conference Champi-onship game in the Super Bowl Era (Rex Ryan became the 13th in 2009). In 2009, Harbs then became the 10th coach since 1990 to reach the playoffs in his first two seasons as a head coach. The last coach to accomplish this feat was Pittsburgh’s Mike Tomlin during the 2007-08 seasons.

HARBS BY THE NUMBERS

HEAD COACH JOHN HARBAUGH

In his two full seasons as the Ravens’ offensive co-ordinator, Cam Cameron’s impact has been signifi-cant. In 2009, the Ravens were the NFL’s ninth best in scoring (24.4 ppg), up from 24th in 2007, while setting team records for most total TDs (47) and most rushing TDs (22). Among other notable stats

in 2009, Baltimore produced the top three offensive total yards games in franchise history.

In his first season in Baltimore (2008), Cameron built a creative of-fense that ranked fourth in the NFL in rushing (148.5 ypg), first in time of possession (33:10) and 11th in points per game (24.1 ppg).

Cameron brought his unique offensive mind to Baltimore after one year as the Miami Dolphins’ head coach. His successful stints with the NFL’s Chargers and Redskins and the NCAA’s Indiana Hoo-siers and Michigan Wolverines have been celebrated.

Under Cameron’s guidance the past three seasons (since 2008)...• The Ravens have rushed for 140.2 yards per game, fourth most in the NFL. Baltimore also has 43 rushing TDs during that span (third most) in the league.

• Baltimore and Carolina are the only teams that have recorded 3,000 passing yards & 2,000 rushing yards in each of the past two seasons.

• The Ravens’ 46 turnovers tie (Washington) for the NFL’s fifth fewest since 2008.

In 2009, the Ravens were one of four teams to boast a 3,500-yard passer (Joe Flacco), 1,000-yard receiver (Derrick Mason), and 1,000-yard rusher (Ray Rice). The 2009 season also marked the first time in franchise history that the Ravens produced a 3,000/1,000/1,000 trio of this kind on offense.

Greg Mattison was named the Ravens’ defensive co-ordinator prior to the 2009 season, after originally joining John Harbaugh’s staff as linebackers coach in 2008, his first year in the NFL. In 2009, the Ra-vens continued their staunch reputation as one of the NFL’s best defenses, finishing as the No. 3 over-

all unit. It was Baltimore’s seventh-straight top-six finish in yards allowed. The Ravens were also the NFL’s stingiest in average yards per rush allowed (3.4), third in points allowed per game (16.3) and were fourth-best in turnover ratio (+10).

Under “Matti” in his first season as “D” coordinator in 2009...

• The Ravens’ defense finished third in the NFL in total yards (300.5) and third in points allowed (16.3). It was the seventh con-secutive season Baltimore’s defense finished in the NFL’s top six.

• The Ravens finished second in the NFL for fewest TDs allowed (27), including four games when the “D” allowed no TDs.

• Mattison now coordinates a unit that this past decade ranks first in many of the NFL’s major defensive categories:

Since 2002, only one interior lineman has registered more tackles than Gregg’s 663 (Ryan Pickett, 669). What makes this feat even more im-pressive is that Gregg missed the entire 2008 cam-

DOMINANT FORCE

One of the NFL’s most disruptive forces, DT Haloti Ngata was named to his first Pro Bowl as a starter in 2009 after posting 41 tackles (23 solo), 1.5 sacks, 1 FF and 1 FR. A key cog in Baltimore’s stout rush defense, from 12/17/06 to 10/4/09, he helped the Ravens produce a 39-game streak without allowing

a 100-yard rusher.

The Ravens have a history of strong run defense, but with Ngata’s help the past four full seasons, Baltimore’s ground “D” has im-proved markedly from what it was before he entered the NFL.
