    HELP FOR SCHOOL-AGE

    CHILDREN WHO STUTTER

CAPITAL DISTRICT - Stutter-ing is a frustrating and em-barrassing problem for mil-lions of people, but it can be especially tough on elemen-tary school-age children. Help is available for parents, teachers, and speech-lan-guage pathologists at most public libraries in the form of a DVD designed to help school-age children who stutter. Some libraries have an older video version. The DVD features students from first through sixth grade, some of who talk about their experiences with stutter-ing. They talk openly about the teasing they face from classmates and how their stuttering sometimes makes them feel about them-selves. The 38-minute DVD, entitled Therapy in Action: The School-age Child Who Stutters, produced by the 67-year-old nonprofit Stut-tering Foundation is avail-able free of charge to public libraries nationwide. Other libraries that will shelve it can contact the Foundation at 1-800-992-9392, e-mail [email protected], or visit www.stutteringhelp.org or www.tartarmudez.org.

triguing facts and hints can help.

    The Facts

While existing home sales have risen recently, the National Association of Realtors annual Profi le of Home Buyers and Sellers found that the share of fi rst-time buyers recently fell to its lowest level (33 percent) in nearly three decades.

Many fi rst-time buyers experience obstacles on the path to homeownership, including dif-fi culty saving for a down payment and tight credit conditions.

    The Hints

    Consider these tips:

Find and work with an expert Realtor who knows the neighborhood. Nothing can replace the local knowledge and real insight that professional Realtors can provide to fi rst-time buy-ers as they navigate the complex home buying process.

According to the Profi le of Home Buyers and Sellers, while most home buyers in the past year began their home search online, 90 percent ended up purchasing their home through an agent. Realtors are not only the source of online real estate data, they also use their unparalleled local market knowledge and re-sources to help close the deal for buyers and sellers.

Meet with a lender to determine how much you can aff ord. Last year, the median price a fi rst-time buyer spent on a home was $169,000. Chances are, you dont have that amount of cash lying around. Thats why 95 percent of fi rst-time buyers who bought a home in the past year fi nanced their pur-chase.

Find out what you can aff ord with a preapproval from a lender. A lender will check your credit history, current debt obligations and other expenses to determine the amount of money youre qualifi ed to borrow at a specifi c interest rate. Dont forget to consider the other costs of homeownership, such as taxes, insurance and utilities.

Identify your housing wish list. Although 46 percent of fi rst-time buyers got a single-family home in the suburbs, you may prefer a condo in an urban environment near public transpor-tation.

Regardless of your preferences, identifying and sharing your wish list can help your Realtor focus on the right home for you, scan listings and connect with those who represent sellers to zero in on homes for sale that meet your budget and criteria.

Keep this advice in mind and you may soon fi nd yourself waking up in the home of your dreams.

IT INNOVATION IS CREATING CAREER OPPORTUNITIES

(NAPS)Technology is a driving force in todays economy, powering innovation and creating jobs. The rapid adoption of cloud computing, mobility, social media and other inno-vations has accelerated the importance of technology in the workplaceand the need for information technology (IT) technicians.

Desktop support has long been one of the most fundamental jobs in all of IT. However, what was once a reactive jobwait-ing for the phone to ring or an e-mail to arrive summoning you to fi x a broken PChas evolved into a proactive position thats far more critical to day-to-day business operations.

    More Than Mainte-nance

Technology main-tenance is much more sophisticated in 2015 than it was 20, 10 or even two years ago. Today, it involves sup-porting handheld devices (iPads and Androids), rolling out software to

thousands of computers and conducting server migrations. Todays IT technicians get hands-on experience and insight into fast-changing technologies, including cloud computing, cyber security, data analysis, mobility and telecommunica-tions.

There remains in some corners a misperception that the ma-jority of IT support jobs have been shipped overseas. The reality is that in many organizations, there are new, more sig-nifi cant opportunities for technicians. And the IT technicians role remains the best, fi rst step someone can take to launch a career in technology.

    Knowledge Workers

Todays engineers and technologists are knowledge workers, possessing a unique combination of skills that cant be easily outsourced or delegated.

With IT departments becoming more closely integrated with other lines of business, the technical knowledge and skills employed by IT technicians are something that cant be de-livered effi ciently or eff ectively over the phone from a call center.

    Is It Right For You?

If you have an interest in technology, along with the ability to solve problems and possess strong people skills, you may be a candidate for a career change and step into a job as an IT technician with a minimal amount of trainingeither in a classroom, online or through self-study.

One way to tell if you have the aptitude is the CompTIA IT Fundamentals certifi cation. This professional credential is available through CompTIA, the nonprofi t association for the IT industry. The exam covers fi ve categories: software, hard-ware, security, networking and basic IT literacy.

Earning a credential from an organization well known and widely respected for its certifi cation program demonstrates to prospective employers that youre ready to enter the IT workforce. It can also serve as a springboard to more ad-vanced IT skills certifi cations and set the stage for new career opportunities and advancement.

    A LITTLE KNOWLEDGE CAN

    MAKE A BIG DIFFERENCE

(NAPS)When it comes to pinpointing potentially serious issues with your ve-hicle, your nose may know more than you realize. For example, the smell of burnt toast might be a sign of an electrical short. The smell of rotten eggs may signal trouble with the emissions system, which includes the catalytic converter. These and other tips are included in Knowledge Is Power, a booklet thats part of a car-care and maintenance clinic developed by ACDelco. It gives vehicle owners easy-to-understand information about their vehicles so they can be informed and make the right choices when they visit an independent auto service center.

Here are some things you may not know about your vehicle:

Reddish stains on the driveway can be a sign of a transmission oil leak.

If your technician asks if your vehicles brakes are grabbing, he wants to know if the brakes engage suddenly when you apply steady pressure to the brake pedal.

    You should pull over im-

mediately if your temperature light reads in the hot zone. That probably means your vehicles coolant is too hot to cool your engine.

Many brake pads have wear indicators. If your vehicle has them, they will emit loud squeals when they detect wear.

Its a good idea to write down your vehicles symptoms before visiting a repair shop, includ-ing noisesand whether these oc-cur when the en-gine is hot or cold.

Air bags work with your safety belts, not as a replacement for them.

    C h i l d r e n under 13 should ride properly se-

    cured in the rear seat.

Always keep at least a half tank of gas in your vehicle to avoid potential damage to your fuel fi lter or fuel line.

Check your tire pressure frequently for safety and fuel economy. Hot and cold outside temperatures aff ect the pres-sure in your tires.

Avoid oil and fuel additives unless recommended by your ser-vice consultant.

Dont use dish detergent to wash your car; it can hurt clearcoat fi nishes.

The Knowledge Is Power booklet is part of a presentation kit available to shops at no charge. Consumers can download the free booklet at www. acdelco.com/pdf/Car-Maintenance-Car-Care-Knowledge-Is-Power-ACDelco.pdf.

For more than 100 years, ACDelco has been supplying parts, technical training and business expertise to independent auto ser-vice centers. To fi nd out if a service center in your neighborhood is sponsoring a Knowledge Is Power clinic, visit ACDelco.com and click on Find a Service Center.
