Here’s a little blast from the past for you since the old year end inventory has me a little pressed for time. If you can come up with nay more idioms, please forward them along to me.
Lately I’ve cultivated an interest in all the plant and gardening terms that have blos-somed into common use. I thought I’d branch out of my normal green thumb routine and root out some of these idioms for you. I germinated this idea some time ago. At fi rst it was just a kernel of an idea that you might think is corny but, as I plowed into it, the idea blossomed. I realized that it would be a tough row to hoe. I wouldn’t be out of the woods until I could come up with enough terms to use as examples. If I couldn’t, the whole idea would wither on the vine. Flowery prose wouldn’t be enough. I decided that the best idea would be to ask around to see if anybody else had any ideas.
I went next door and asked the young mother who lived there if she had any ideas. Her husband was home and they were entertaining some of his guy friends that afternoon. She was a fl ower of womanhood and, among all these rough men, she seemed a rose among thorns. I’ve always considered her husband to be a bit of a sap but she was always fresh as a daisy. She had told me before that her family roots were in the Big Apple. She and her family had tired of the bustle of the city moved and are putting down roots here since they enjoy the quieter life in Upstate. Her husband’s company had opened a branch offi ce in the area. Busi-ness was very good and they found that they were soon rolling in clover. His business was growing by leaps and bounds. They had recently had identical twin girls and they were like peas in a pod. They also had an older son and they felt bad about uprooting him from his old neighborhood and friends. It was hard for him at fi rst but he seemed to be making friends and transplanting well. The young sprout was the spitting image of his father. I guess the apple doesn’t fall far from the tree after all. The husband’s hobby was restoring cars and his latest project was a cherry ’57 Chevy that was parked in the driveway. He was very proud of it. I could tell by the way he bragged about and polished it that it was the apple of his eye. He told me a buddy of his had an even nicer ’58 Chevy Nomad and he really wished that his car was as nice. I told him that his car was quite sharp and reminded him that the grass is always greener on the other side of the fence.
It was at this point that he noticed a long scratch on the side of the car. He thought I’d done it. I could tell by his furrowed brow that he was quite upset. I could see that this was becoming a thorny situation. I told him that I hadn’t gone near his car and that he was bark-ing up the wrong tree. I tried to be as cool as a cucumber. He was not placated and my rosy outlook evaporated. My quest for gathering gardening idioms had so far only provided this bitter harvest. He seemed quite perturbed and he and his buddies started to approach me in such a threatening manner that I feared they would mow me down and I’d soon be pushing up daisies. I longed for the green grass of home so I just took off running. It was quite a distance and by the time I reached home I was plum tuckered out.
So here I was with the fruits of my labor wasted. My budding interest in gardening idioms had been nipped in the bud by this unseemly altercation with my neighbor. Knowing that you reap what you sow, I considered offering my irate neighbor an olive branch as a gesture of good will. I decided that he was such a snake in the grass that it would be a waste of time. It was time to seek out greener pastures.
This idea was turning out to be no bed of roses. I felt as though I’d led myself up the garden path and ended up with nowhere to go. Perhaps I just couldn’t see the forest for the trees. I needed to come up with something quick since my deadline was fast approaching. I couldn’t let the grass grow under my feet any longer than I already had. I need the help of someone who really knows their onions. There’s no one in my family tree that I thought would be of help so I’ll have to turn to you; my readers.
Try as I might I can’t seem to come up with any garden or plant idioms. If you can think of any, please forward them along to The Weekly. Thanks for the read.

I can no longer fly. The sun and winds have caused me to become tattered and torn. Please carry me as a reminder that You are not forgotten.” The Stars are given freely to any soldier or veteran that we meet, or are mailed to them. Stars are given to Veteran Homeless Shelters so those Veterans know that we respect them and they are not forgotten. Stars are given to our Wounded Warriors as a Thank You for what they have endured. Stars are given to our Veterans in Nursing Homes and Veteran Hospitals. Volunteers are needed to help create these Stars. DID YOU KNOW? Consuming excessive amounts of sodium not only affects your health but also may affect your appearance. A diet that’s rich in sodium has long been linked to a host of health problems, in-cluding high blood pressure, stroke, kidney disease, and stomach cancer. But consuming too much sodium also leads to increased water retention, which can cause weight gain and make men and women appear puffy and bloated. According to the American Heart Association, the recommended daily sodium intake is 1,500 milligrams. But the AHA notes that the average American consumes more than double that amount on a daily basis, and Health Canada as-serts that Canadians also eat roughly the same amount of sodium each day as their American counterparts. While sodium is an essential nutrient, the human body does not need a lot of it to reap its benefits. Bread, processed meats and soups are some of the major contributors of dietary sodium, so men, women and even children, who the AHA notes are far more likely to develop high blood pressure as adults if they consume a high-sodium diet as a child, should study packaging on these items to ensure they aren’t overloaded with sodium.
DID YOU KNOW?Though laughter is often referred to as “the best medicine,” no definitive study has been conducted to determine the effects of laughter on overall human health, leaving open the possibility that maintaining a good sense of humor and a positive attitude are just as important, if not more im-portant, than finding time to laugh each day. But even if laughter is not medicinal, its benefits can mimic those of exercise. When a person laughs, his or her pulse and blood pressure increase, and people tend to breathe faster when they laugh. Faster breathing sends more oxygen to the tissues, which can help the heart and lungs work more efficiently. In addition, a Vanderbilt Uni-versity study found that be-tween 10 and 15 minutes of laughter can burn as many as 50 calories. Finding time to laugh may also indirectly improve the body’s immune system response, as stud-ies have suggested that in-fection-fighting antibodies might be more abundant in people who can use humor to combat stress. STAY FIT WHEN TEMPERATURES DROP
Many animals hibernate throughout the winter. Humans are afforded no such luxury. In fact, living a sedentary lifestyle during the colder months of the year can actually prove detrimen-tal to human health. Exercise is beneficial any time of the year, but it can be especially so during the winter months when colder temperatures force many people inside, where they live more sedentary lifestyles than they do during the rest of the year. Adapting your exercise habits in the winter can help you make it through the colder months in great shape.
There is no reason to stop exercising when the temperature drops. The American Heart As-sociation says working out in the cold weather has distinct advantages over working out in hot and humid conditions. When the weather is cold, you may be able to work out longer and harder because the heat won’t zap your energy levels, and exercising outdoors in the winter is a great way to get small doses of sunlight that can improve mood and help your body pro-duce more vitamin D.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says exercise can help boost your immune system, which can help you fight colds and flu symptoms. Just a few minutes of exercise each day can help prevent simple viral and bacterial infections as well. Working out in the winter may help you burn more calories than in warmer seasons. Research published in Medicine & Science in Sports & Exercise found that race times are faster in cold weather than in warmer temperatures. Quicker runs or walks can burn more calories.
If exercising outdoors is too uncomfortable, break up your routine into smaller, more man-ageable sessions. Aim for 10 minute sessions several times per day. This quickly can add up to the 30 minutes of daily recommended exercise. Dress in layers so you can feel comfortable, adjusting your clothing as necessary. You don’t want to be freezing, but you don’t want to wear so many clothes that you start sweating and risk hypothermia. Consider less traditional exercises when winter sets in. These include shoveling snow, sledding, skating, skiing, and snowshoeing.

SIX VEHICLE WARNING SIGNS YOUR NOSE CAN
NOTICE(NAPS)—While most motor-ists are fond of what’s known as that “new car smell,” there are some other specifi c odors that motorists should also be aware of.
Identifying these suspect smells early on can help car owners be car care aware and avoid the hassle and expense of an unexpected breakdown.
The Car Care Council recom-mends a sniff test of your ve-hicle to identify any unusual smells, including the follow-ing six warning signs:
1. The smell of burnt rub-ber could be slipping drive belts or misplaced loose hoses that might be rubbing against rotating accessory drive pulleys. Do not reach in if the engine compartment is hot.
2. The smell of hot oil could mean that oil is leaking onto the exhaust system. To verify the leak, look for oil on the pavement or smoke coming from the engine area.
3. The smell of gasoline is likely the sign of a gas leak in some area of the vehicle such as a fuel injector line or the fuel tank. Any smell of fuel can result in a possible fi re hazard, so immediate at-tention should be given.
4. The sweet smell of syrup may be a sign that your car is leaking engine coolant from a leaky component related
to the car’s cooling system. Do not open the radiator cap when it is hot.
5. The smell of burning car-pet could be a sign of brake trouble and a safety hazard. Have your brakes checked right away, especially if this smell is happening during normal driving conditions.
6. If the smell of rotten eggs is coming from your ve-hicle, it could mean a prob-lem with your catalytic con-verter or a poorly running engine causing the catalytic converter to become over-loaded and fail due to melt-down.
“When you smell any pe-culiar odor, you should not ignore it. Instead, bring your vehicle to a professional ser-vice technician that you trust to get an informed opinion on the nature of the odor,” said Rich White, executive director, Car Care Council.
The Car Care Council is the source of information for the “Be Car Care Aware” cam-
paign promoting the ben-efi ts of regular vehicle care. For a copy of the council’s “Car Care Guide” or for more information, visit www.car-care.org.
