    La

    for The

    La Red

    is

    the

The concept is simple. In a cooperative effort,

certain works of literature will be endor sed by La

    Red .

    This

    will

    amount

    to a

    Good-Housekeeping

Seal of Approval . Church workers will be able to

recognize the seal and thereby know that the piece

    of literature

    been

    approved by a

    committee which represents many different

pub li ca ti on min is tr ie s of the Christian

The seal will assure doctrinal puiitv- and

    REPORT

    God ha s

    indeed

    blessed and moved

    in

    th e

    relocation and development of

    the

    orphanage in

Chihuahua, Mexico. Brother Bill Baker has

    been working with the

    orphanage

    for several

years in coordinatingwork crews from stateside

churches to improve the liv ing conditions at

    Casa

    Hogar Jebneel .

    During

    early trips, items

    such

    as

    plumbing

    in a kitchen

    and

    providing

    hot water showers

    were

    undertaken. In

    subsequent

    trips,

    the need

    for

    total relocation

    became apparent.

    It

    was in January

    of

    1992 that Lawrence

    Hallum

    v is it ed t he wor k a nd t he

    f or l an d

    was

    begun

in eamest. Shortl y thereafter, a

    group from

    Platte Valley

    Bible

    College

    made

    a

    commitment

    to help

    purchase

    property.

Land was acquired and during November of

1992, a work crew from Crossroads Church

    of

Christ in Portland, Oregon, began site

    development. God s

    hand

    could

    be

    seen at work

as individuals and groups from both the United

States and Mexico joined forces to complete

    stage one

    of

    the development.

    In

    August

    of 1993,

    the

    facilities

    were

    occupied.

    Completed

    construction includes a

multi-purpose building (kitchen, dining hall and

ass embly area ), four dormito ry units (wit h a

total capacity capable of housing up to 50

    children) and

    two

    large rest-rooms.

At the p re sent time , 17 chil dren are being

    taken care of at

    Casa Hogar

    Jebneel .

    Much

    of

the ope ra ti ona l expen ses are

    being

    met

through the labor and sacrifice of Daniel

Banda. SAFE Ministries is including this

project in it s monthly budget as funds are

made available through God s help. As little as

    $40.00 per month will

    support

    one child. Two

    thousand

    dol la rs will be

    needed

    month ly to

    support

    50 children.

    A question has been asked

    of

    me several times during recent

months, Bill, why do we nee d anoth er

ministry? That is a valid question and it

    deserves

    a

    valid

    answer

Many have drawn the conclusion that SAFE

Ministr ies is designed to duplicate ministr ies

which already exist among the Christian

    Churches/Churches

    o

    Christ.

    that

    were

    th e

case, I would say there is no

    need

    for another

    ministry,

    SAFE Ministries brings together elements

of ministry which have not been brought

together before among our brotherhood . While

it is true we do have mini st ri e s wh ich ar e

involved in print ing, evangel ism, short term

    missions, benevolence and orphanage work,

    SAFE Ministriesis incorporating elements from

    each o these area s

    into

    a multi-faceted

    ministry in which each

    area

    of

    service

    augments the other.

I can see the Lord's hand very clearly in the

establishment of this ministry. During over 20

years of service in Latin America, I have

    developed a distinct philosophy

    of

    missions. I

    haveseen

    m ny

    different ministries close-up. It

    is the goal

    of

    SAFE ministries to provide an

area of service which will further the Kingdom

of God and promote unity among His people

    throughout the world.

In the articles of incorporation of

    Servants

    and

    Friends Evangelistic Ministries, Inc., the

following service goals and objectives are

SAFE MINISTRIES NEWS - Febniaiy 1994

    delineated: 1) Evangelistic Outreach worldwide

    through a) publishing and distribution

    of

evangelistic materials in various languages and

    b) developing an equipping ministry serving

evangelistic and nurturing needs; 2) Provide an

    base and assistance for

    new

    church evangelism,

    3) provide a short-term internship training

    program, 4) develop a program

    of

    benevolence

and 5) to provide full accounting to all

    supporting churches and/or individuals.

    The

    above

    goals

    are

    nice

    to look at. I

realize they will not be easily met. It would be

unreali sti c for me to say that we will develop

    all

    of

    these goals simultaneouslywe

    cannot

    do

that. However, God can and may Jesus

responded to the question, Who then can be

saved? by stating, With man this is

impossible, but with God. all things are

    possible. (

    Matthew

    19:26) I can state,

because of God's power , we can see the goals

    accomplished

    The initial full-time

    staff of

    the ministry

will only be twomyself and Brother Bob

    Gurwell .

    Many of

    you

    know

    of

    my background.

    Over the past 20+ years

    of

    work in and among

the Latin American people, I have worked

    primarily in areas

    of

    literature production and

distribution through two different ministries of

    our brotherhoodColegio Biblico and Spanish

Amer ican Evangelism. I have worked in

helping people meet needs. Even though much

time was spent in the production

    of

    materials,

my heart has always been in hands-on

distribution on the field. These opportunities

have opened my eyes to many other areas

    of

    service.

    Bo b Gurwell

    comes

    to SAFE Ministries

with a diverse Latin American background.

His practical experience in ministry includes:

    bi-lingual preaching, teaching, school

    administration, writing and lecturing.

Bob has completed the classroom work for

    a PHD from Emory University.

    The

    emphasis

    was

    Spanish

    religious literature.

    Almost a

    year

ago. Bob contac ted me on

    some

    other matters

    and wan te d to

    know

    what

plans I had f or t he future. As I described th e

vision which I believe God has given me for

SAFE Ministries , Bob's immediate response

was, Bill this is exactly the type

    of

    ministry I

    have been looking for.

    I

    have

known of Bob for a long time

    but

have just recently gotten to really know him.

Bob has a very high degree of what can bes t

be described as common sense . In working

    closely with

    Bob,

    I

    have found

    we

    both have

the same philosophy of missions. I am looking

forward to a long relationship in the Lord with

    Bob Gu rwe ll .

The emphasis of the full-time staff will be

in development, production and distribution of

literature . SAFE Minis tr ies will depend on a

    volunteer part-time

    staff

    in the development

    of

    other areas

    of

    ministry.

    Much has already been

Why another ministry? Because a job needs

to be done Just as College Press has proven to

be a viable compliment to Standard Publishing,

SAFE Ministries is a viable compliment to

    many

    other

    Your

    A COMMENT FROM O GURWELL

    The

    desire and necessity for my

participation in the compilation and writing of

Biblical Hispanic publications and materials is

    bom

    not only out

    of

    academic interest,

    but

    also

of passion. For many years we have suffered

    with the absence o f

The failure to meet this goal can be

In the Christian life, we ore always undergoing change. Many contemporary songs

    describe

    that

    change.

    One popular theme

    is Bullfrogs

    and

    Butterflies, both been born

    again . The process

    can

    also be described

    as

God is not through with me--yet .

That process is now taking place for an entire ministry in

    l

    Paso, Texas. Several years

    ago. El

    had

    to reorganize by bankruptcy in

    order

to preserve the Lord s assets which

    had

    been

contributed by His people. After a long legal battle,

    EPSM

    was released from bankruptcy

    with

the capability of paying all debts in

    full

upon the receipt of the proceeds from the sale

of their property. The Lord s assets had been
