    I. Hollywood location

Hollywood is a district in Los Angeles, California, U.S.A., situated west-northwest ofDowntown. Due to its fame and cultural identity as the historical center of movie studios andstars. Today much of the movie industry has dispersed into surrounding areas such as Burbankand the Westside, but significant ancillary industries (such as editing, effects, props, post-

production, and lighting companies) remain in Hollywood.

    II The origin of Hollywood

The name in fact was coined by Hobart Johnstone Whitley, the Father of Hollywood. He andhis wife Gigi came up with the name in 1886 while on their honeymoon. They were standing onthe hill overlooking the valley which is now Whitley Heights. It is part of the California

Historic Preservation Overlay Zone. With a hand shake a deal was secured to purchase 500acres from Mr. Hurd whom they shared the name of their new town. Over the years Whitleyhad established more than 140 towns.

Harvey Wilcox drew up a grid map for a town, which he filed with the county recorder's officeon February 1, 1887, the first official appearance of the name Hollywood. And now the word "Hollywood" is often used as a metonym for the American film andtelevision industry.

In early 1910, director D. W. Griffith was sent by the Biograph Company to the west coast withhis acting troop consisting of actors Blanche Sweet, Lillian Gish, Mary Pickford, Lionel

Barrymore, and others. They started filming on a vacant lot near Georgia Street in DowntownLos Angeles. The Company decided to explore new territories and traveled several miles northto a little village that was friendly and enjoyed the movie company filming there. This place

was called "Hollywood". D. W. Griffith then filmed the first movie ever shot in Hollywoodcalled In Old California, a Biograph melodrama about Latino/Mexican-occupied California inthe 1800s. Biograph stayed there for wonderful place, in 1913 many movie-makers headedwest. With this film, the movie industry was "born" in Hollywood which soon became themovie capital of the world. The first studio in Hollywood proper was Nestor Studios, founded in 1911 by Al Christie for

David Horsley in an old building on the southeast corner of Sunset Boulevard and GowerStreet. The first motion picture to be filmed in Hollywood was filmed at the Whitley homelocated on the corner of Prospect Avenue (now Hollywood Boulevard) and Wilcox.

    III. Famous places in Hollywood

The Hollywood Hotel wasa famous hostelry andlandmark located on thenorth side ofHollywood

Boulevard betweenHighland and OrchidAvenues in Hollywood,California, USA.

The first section of thehotel was built in 1902 byH.J. Whitley and opened inDecember of that year.Though the HollywoodHotel housed many of thegreat stars in its day, it wasrazed in August 1956 tomake way for a US$10million development, with

a twelve-story office building for the First Federal Savings & Loan Association of Hollywood,a shopping center and parking lots. The Kodak Theatre, which opened in 2001 on HollywoodBoulevard at Highland Avenue, where the historic Hollywood Hotel once stood, has becomethe new home of the Oscars.

In 1904, a new trolley car track running from Los Angeles to Hollywood up Prospect Avenue

was opened. The system was called "the Hollywood boulevard.

The famousHollywood Sign perched high atop Mount Lee, the tallest peak in L.A.

The Sign measures 450 feet long, its mammoth letters are 45 feet high, and it's visible from allparts of Hollywood. Erected in 1923 as an advertising sign for a real estate development inBeachwood Canyon, the Sign originally read "Hollywoodland." The last four letters wereremoved in 1945, after Hollywood had become the world's movie capital, and the Sign hadalready become a well-known landmark.

The fame of Hollywood came from its identity with the movies and movie stars; and the word"Hollywood," a word that, when spoken in any country on Earth, evokes worlds, even galaxiesof memories, came to be colloquially used to refer to the motion picture industry.

The Hollywood Walk of Fame was created in1958 and the first star was placed in 1960 as atribute to artists working in the entertainmentindustry.

Hollywood Wax Museum is the only wax museumin the country devoted entirely to celebrity figures. That means a visit to the Hollywood Wax Museum

puts you face-to-face with icons of the silver screen, recreated so faithfully that youd swear they werealive.

In 1985, the Hollywood Boulevard commercial and entertainment district was officially listedin the National Register of Historic Places protecting important buildings and ensuring that the

significance of Hollywood's past would always be a part of its future.

What is film?A film, also called a movie or motion picture, is a story conveyed with moving images. It is

produced by recording photographic images with cameras, or by creating images usinganimation techniques orvisual effects. The process offilmmaking has developed into an artform and industry.

Films are cultural artifacts created by specific cultures, which reflect those cultures, and, in turn, affect them. Film is considered to be an important art form, a source of popular entertainmentand a powerful method foreducating orindoctrinating citizens. The visual elements ofcinema give motion pictures a universal power of communication. Some films have become

popular worldwide attractions by using dubbing orsubtitles that translate the dialogue into thelanguage of the viewer.

A common name for film in the United States is movie, while in Europe the term cinema orfilmis preferred. Additional terms for the field in general include the big screen, the silver screen, the cinema and the movies.

Visual Effects: The Technique of Performance Capture

Performance capture (or motion capture) became more widespread and sophisticated as aspecial effects technique in the 2000s. Performance capture referred to a digital blend of live

performance and animated elements. Actors wore heavy, dot-sensor-covered spandex body suitsand a helmet, and initially acted out their scenes in isolation from other sets, props, costumes, oractors. Expressions and movements were first recorded by digital cameras as 3D "moving data

points" - and afterwards, the digitally-recorded performances were translated and embellished

by key-frame artists and integrated into an exclusively virtual environment.

The decade of the 2000s saw advancements in 3D and an explosion of releases of both 3-D 20

films and IMAX films. There were many varieties of 3-D, including Disney Digital 3D, Real D3D, InTru3D, D-BOX, and IMAX 3D. And with many more theatres converted to the 3Dformat, that meant increased demand and bookings (and ticket prices) for 3D films.

In general terms, film franchises are multi-picture stories including some of the same charactersfrom film to film. Although film series have been around for many decades (e.g., the Tarzanfilms, the Sherlock Holmes films), film franchises really became a major cinematic fact of lifesince the 1970s, beginning with thePlanet of the Apes series, theJames Bondseries-franchiseand then the Star Wars films. The corporate mentality, that began to look on films as"products," and thereby named a series of films "franchises."

Films that are considered franchises in this compilation meet most of these criteria:

they normally have at least three films in the series they usually have a combined gross box-office (domestic) revenue income (unadjusted

for inflation) of at least $400 million. in terms of genre popularity, fantasy/adventure, horror and sci-fi films fare the best as

crowd-pleasing franchises (with generous doses of action, violence and PG-ratedcontent), featuring big-name stars and big budget production values

Since 1950s, American films have become increasingly divided into two categories:Blockbusters and independent films. Studios have focused on relying on a handful of extremelyexpensive releases every year in order to remain profitable. Such blockbusters emphasizespectacle, star power, and high production value, all of which entail an enormous budget.Blockbusters typically rely upon star power and massive advertising to attract a huge audience.A successful blockbuster will attract an audience large enough to offset production costs andreap considerable profits. Such productions carry a substantial risk of failure, and most studiosrelease blockbusters that both over- and underperform in a year.

Studios supplement these movies with independent productions, made with small budgets andoften independently of the studio corporation. Movies made in this manner typically emphasizehigh professional quality in terms of acting, directing, screenwriting, and other elementsassociated with production, and also upon creativity and innovation. These movies usually relyupon critical praise or niche marketing to garner an audience. Because of an independent film'slow budgets, a successful independent film can have a high profit-to-cost ratio, while a failurewill incur minimal losses, allowing for studios to sponsor dozens of such productions in

addition to their high-stakes releases. The Major Hollywood Studios in the 2000s:

The Hollywood studio system during the 2000s was mostly dominated by six globalentertainment companies or conglomerates, which made about 90% of the North Americanfilms:

    Time Warner

    (formerly Warner Bros.)

These six companies generally farmed out the production of their films to literally dozens ofother independents and in-house pseudo-indie subsidiaries (such as Warner'sNew Line, Fox'sSearchlight, and NBC Universal'sFocus Features). At mid-decade in 2005, independent filmsmade outside the Hollywood system faced an uphill battle. This was the first year since 1995that every $100 million hit came from a major studio.
