This guidebook includes useful tips in writing and presenting a successful report, a list of commonly used phrases in academic Indonesian language and some tips on how to present the report in bahasa Indonesia. The focus here is on language aspects and structure only. For further guidelines regarding

the content, the research process and methodology, please refer to the Field Studies Guide provided in separate book.

“GUNAKAN(LAH) BAHASA INDONESIA YANG BAIK DAN BENAR!”

This phrase or slogan may have recurred during your bahasa Indonesia class - a slogan that was widely introduced by the government in the 1990s during the Soeharto era. As a national language of a country comprising more than 15,000 islands and 700 bahasa daerah (local language), bahasa Indonesia is very likely to transform in many ways. There was a need to establish maintain its standard function and consistency for this relatively new language. Therefore, a standard guideline of the language was established during the 1980s. This guideline is called EyD (Ejaan yang Disempurnakan/ The Enhanced Spelling or Pronunciation). “Gunakan Bahasa Indonesia yang Baik dan Benar!” slogan was then introduced to promote this initiative nationwide.

As suggested, to use bahasa Indonesia yang ‘baik’ means to use bahasa Indonesia ‘correctly’: i.e. using suitable works for your target audience. There are many varieties of bahasa Indonesia and they are situational, e.g. formal and informal. In your report you must use formal language as your target audience is within a formal discourse. For example, in academic language, it is suggested to use ‘tetapi’ or ‘namun’ (formal), instead of ‘tapi’ (informal), whereas when you talk to your friends informally, it feels awkward to say ‘Saya sudah makan namun/tetapi masih lapar’, instead, it feels more comfortable to say this in a less formal way as in ‘Aku udah makan tapi masih lapar’.

Bahasa ‘benar’ is also known as bahasa ‘baku’ (standardised). The standardised form refers to its:

• Grammatical order, for example ‘acara itu sedang kami ikuti’ instead of ‘acara itu kami sedang ikuti’;

• Spelling, for example ‘cantik sekali’ instead of ‘cantik banget’, ‘memakai’ instead of ‘pakai’ and ‘tidak mudah’ instead of ‘nggak gampang’;

• Pronunciation, for example /benar/ instead of /bener/ and /habis/ instead of /abis/;

• Short, compact and easy to understand (singkat, padat, and mudah dimengerti). As you might have noticed, some expressions in bahasa Indonesia tend to be longer compared to expressions used in English. In term of writing a report, it is suggested to use

effective bahasa Indonesia, which suggests cutting off any redundant words, to present clearer ideas to the reader.

GETTING FAMILIAR WITH “BAHASA PENELITIAN”: USEFUL TIPS

Limiting the choice of words into bahasa Indonesia yang ‘baik’ dan ‘benar’ in your report does not mean that your report will be flat and boring. There are many different ways of expressing your ideas in a clear way and yet still use a rich and exciting vocabulary. There are some exercises to enrich your ‘baik’ dan ‘benar’ vocabulary and familiarise yourself with new words. Some of the exercises are as follow:

1. Brainstorming: Create a glossary

Writing down a list of relevant English words and phrases can be useful in order to write your research without having to go through the dictionary constantly. Then, translate each of these words and its varieties into Indonesian words. It is also a good way to keep your choice of words rich but in a consistent manner.

Once you have finished listing the words, you might want to go through each word with your Indonesian friends to make sure that these word choices are contextually correct and up to date.

2. News: Read and listen

Reading Indonesian newspapers, news magazines or online news will greatly enhance your writing and speaking skills. You might hear this often at the ACICIS orientation as one of the useful tips to improve your Indonesian language skills. This advice is especially true if you are doing the research program. It is good idea not to simply read or watch, but also exercise the words and phrases, e.g. highlighting the new words you find on the newspaper, summarising the news, writing down some new words you hear from the TV (e.g. Metro TV).

In addition to nation-wide printed media, such as Kompas and Tempo, local newspapers are also available, for example Malang Post for East Java students and Radar Bandung for West Java students. There are also online magazine/ newspapers available in bahasa Indonesia, for example tempo.com, kompas.com, etc.

3. Go to a conference/ seminar in bahasa Indonesia

No matter what the topic of the conference is, it is a good exercise to get familiar with formal language. Most seminars and conferences use the formal type of bahasa Indonesia because there is a distance between the speaker and the audience, unlike in the classroom. Focus on and embrace the language of the presentation, it is a good way to keep you awake during a long and never-ending series of speech.

4. Discuss your research topic with Indonesian classmates with bahasa Indonesia

This is a good way to further explore the topic as well as to enrich the vocabularies. Don’t scare your friends away with some serious discussion topic as a start, but try to ask them what their research topic is (most of UNPAR students are doing their skripsi too- so you’re definitely not alone!). Your friends or classmates are invaluable resource - always double check new words you find online/printed if you’re unsure with them.

I . W RITING

Language and format wise, there are a couple of things that need to be considered in order to write a sound research in bahasa Indonesia. You need to consider your choice of words, expression and composition.

A. CHOICE OF WORDS AND EXPRESSION

There are a number of varieties used in formal language. Feel free to vary the use of your language, but ensure that the different varieties you use are correct.

To begin with, let’s review the general words and phrases which are frequently used in a report, i.e. the transition words and phrases.

a. Transition Words and Phrases

Transition words and phrases, or words/ phrases used to connect one idea to the next are known as conjunctions. Transition words are very important to make a coherent sentence and link paragraphs. It helps the reader to connect from one idea to the next.

In order to correctly use a variety of transition words in bahasa Indonesia, four types of words often used in transition are provided below1:

1. Additive: to show addition, introduction, similarity to other ideas; 2. Adversative: to signal conflict, contradiction concession, dismissal; 3. Casual: to signal cause/effect and reason/result, and; 4. Sequential: to signal a chronological or logical sequence.

Most conjunctions in bahasa Indonesia have the same function as conjunctions in English. However, you may notice when you go through some of the samples provided in the next section, that there are a few that are different from English.

II . PRESENTING The grade will be determined based on the average grade of three examiners (including the supervisor). The scale of the grade is from 0 up to 100. The grade of the paper will be registered as the grade of Skripsi (6 credits). Some factors influenced the grade:

" clear, well-structured and comprehensive presentation; " understanding to the topic; " ability to answer questions in the question-and-answer session.

b. Presentation

In this part, you are required to explain your research in a clear structure. You can begin by listing out points that you are going to talk or by giving a short narration. You need to ensure that your supervisor and examiners understand each point you are presenting. Again, gunakanlah Bahasa Indonesia dengan baik dan benar. Please remember that the tone for the presentation is expected to be formal. So, the language you use will definitely play an important role in setting the appropriate tone and in making you look and sound presentable. Furthermore, great body language can help you deliver your points more effectively. Learn and practise it with your friends.

C. GIVING THE PRESENTATION

Practise, practise, practise!

There will be a lot of data that you are presenting. Practicing, by running it through in your head, speaking it loud and rehearsing it in front of friends and/or ACICIS Staff, will help you remember the sequence and contents of your presentation. This will also give you a sense of the level of nervousness you will get on the day. It also gives you the chance to get feedback from your friends and/or ACICIS Staff. The goal is that on the day everything you talk about comes naturally. Also, please come early to the venue to prepare your presentation, content-wise and logistically – IT problems could make you even more nervous.

Know your key vocabs/ phrases and be comfortable with your knowledge!

By right, as you spent a lot of time researching your topic, you will be the most knowledgeable person in the room about it. Be comfortable and be confident that you know what you are presenting. III . FAQS To who should I submit the electronic final version of my Skripsi?

Submit your final report to your supervisor, copying in: • Ibu Ida at the International Office ([email protected]); • Ele at ACICIS: [email protected]; and • Asa: [email protected] (ACICIS’ Jakarta & Bandung PC).

How many hardcopies should I print of my skripsi?

Three, all submitted at the International Office. Copies are to be provided to:

(1) ACICIS (2) UNPAR International Office (3) your supervisor.

You might want to print an extra copy and keep it for yourself. When should I send the hardcopy to the International Office?

Usually, the deadline for the hardcopy is three days after the final presentation. This is because you might want to change some parts in your report, which you might find out during your final presentation.

How is my skripsi assessed?

Compositions of the final grade:

1) Paper: the grade will be determined individually by your supervisor. The grade of the paper will be registered as the grade for Seminar Unit (3 credits); Considerations for determining the grade are:

a. Difficulties and quality of the topic b. Quality of the field research c. Research method, process and output d. Logic and structure of the paper e. Comprehensiveness and analytical values.

2) Presentation: The grade will be determined based on the average grade of three

examiners (including the supervisor). The scale of the grade is from 0 up to 100. The grade of the paper will be registered as the grade of Skripsi (6 credits).

What happened if I don’t submit my work on time?

This depends on your supervisor’s decision. If she/he agrees to the late submission because of circumstances beyond your control this won’t affect your final mark. However, if this is at your own fault, there might be a reduction in your mark. The maximum mark for late submission at your own fault is a B.

How many people will be watching my presentation?

There will be three representatives from UNPAR: your supervisor, Examiner A and Examiner B.

How long is the presentation for?

Presentations should run for maximum of 30 minutes followed by 30 minutes Q&A. How should I dress for the presentation?

Local students are expected to wear business attire (with suit and tie). You can conform to this ‘tradition’ or check with your supervisors about what they expect of you.

Role of supervisors:

Your supervisor can assist with: 1) Supervise the writing process in English or bahasa Indonesia (this depends on the

arrangement between the student and ACICIS); 2) To help or to facilitate the with field research (e.g. provide contacts, discuss the field

site/institution etc); 3) Suggest the research methodology and writing outline; 4) Review the paper (at least 3 times, i.e. finalise the background of the topic, finalise

literature review, finalise the final report); 5) Regularly meet the student and discuss the progress of field study with the student

(and the student buddy); 6) Provide the oral examination during the final presentation and give the final grade of

the writing; 7) Participate at the closing meeting of the program.
