ABSTRACT

Kampung Bagan Baru is located in the district of Selama in the state of Perak.

The population of the village in 2013 is around 488. The vast majority of villagers

are Muslims. The main economic activities in the village are agriculture-based.

In addition, some villagers are engaged in the local homestay programme and in

the small local museum. The education institutes in Kampung Bagan Baru range

from kindergartens to secondary schools.

INTRODUCTION

Kampung Bagan Baru is located in the district of Selama, Perak. It is

48km from the town of Taiping. There are five small villages in the district of

Selama: Kampung Jalan Baru, Kampung Sungai Limau, Kampung Padang Lalang,

Kampung Sungai Lempong and Kampung Bagan Baru. Kampung Bagan Baru

was established about 56 years ago and the village covers on area of about 28.917

hectares. It has a population of slightly over 1,000, most of whom are Muslims.

Encik Haji Zulkboli bin Ahmad is currently holding the position of village

head. Besides, the village is administrated by Jawatankuasa Kemajuan &

Keselamatan Kampung (JKKK). This committee meets monthly to discuss

matters concerning the village. Agriculture and fishing are the main source of

income.

The village head welcomes us at Kampong Bagan Baru.

POPULATION

According to the information given by the secretary of Kampung Bagan

Baru, Encik Kassim bin Bakar, this village has a population of 488. The vast

majority of this population are Muslims who worship at the village mosques.

SOCIETY, CULTURE AND RELIGION

In Kampung Bagan Baru, most of the villagers are Muslims and the Malay

language is widely spoken. There are two mosques in the Kampung Bagan Baru.

There is no other religious in the village.

The main festivals held in the village are religious festivals, e.g. Israk

Merraj, Maulidul Rasul and festival of Arwah. Besides that, one of the special

festivals in the village is a self-defense event.

Villagers hold festivals at this multi-purpose hall.

Kampung Bagan Baru, has a small museum which exhibits historical and

traditional items from the village. Entrance is free.

EDUCATION

According to one of the villagers in Kampung Bagan Baru, Pak Cik Hassan, there

is a kindergarten and a few schools in the village. The nursery / kindergarten is

named Kemas Bakan Baharu. There are 25 students and 2 teachers at this nursery.

The village also has a primary school and a secondary school.

Sekolah Kebangsaan Bagan Baharu.

The primary school is named Sekolah Kebangsaan Bagan Baharu. It was built in

1950. Currently, the school has 297 students and 31 teachers. The secondary

school is named Sekolah Menengah Kebagsaan Redang Panjang. It has 639

students and 41 teachers. There is free internet access provided in the school.

ECONOMIC ACTIVTIES

Planting of herbs provides income for villagers. Encik Md Zaidi bin Abu

Bakar (also known as Pak Su Zaid) owns a herb farm in the village. The most

important herb grown here is “Mas Cotek”, which is sold throughout the country.

The price of this herb ranges from RM50.00 to RM100.00 per kg.

According to Pak Su Zaid, Mas Cotek is good for post-natal care as it

helps to reduce the size of the womb. Besides, it is good for curing and

preventing diabetes, high blood pressure, stomachache, skin problems and others.

Mas Cotek is approved by the director of Tumbuhan Ubatan herba Malaysia

(FRIM), Dr. Azizul Abdul Kadir, Dr. Omar Jantan from Clinic Sentul and Dr.

Ustaz Nazri from Clinic Kuala Selangor. Mas Cotek herbal drink is safe and easy

to prepare.

In addition to Mas Cotek, 30 other herbs are also planted in Pak Su Zaid‟s

farm. According to Pak Su Zaid, a wider variety of herbs used to be grown in the

village but the range has diminished due to climate changes. Some villagers are

engaged in the rubber and oil palm plantations outsides the village.

TOURISM

Kampung Bagan Baru has a tranquil environment. The villagers are

generally friendly and helpful.

There are small food outlets / cafes in the village but no restaurant. Besides,

there is a mini museum in the village which is operated by Pak Su Zaid.

“Lingzi”

Besides, Homestay programmes in Kampung Bagan Baru attract tourists to

visit the village. Pak-Tes Ali and also Pak Su are in charge of homestay

programme which has been operating for 8 years. According to Pak Su, many

visitors enjoy the homestay which costs RM35 per person per day, inclusive of

meals.

On top of that, homestay guests are taken care of by their foster families

who take them on tours of the village.

PROBLEMS

Environment

The main problem faced by the villagers is floods, especially at low lying areas.

Facilities

Kampung Bagan Baru is a small village where houses are located at a distance

from each other. Facilities like wet market, sports facilities and hospitals are not

available in the village. Nevertheless, there is a small clinic in the village to

handle minor ailments.

SOLUTION

Environment

In order to deal with flooding in the village, the government is now conducting a

project named “Tambatan Banjir”. This project was started in April 2013.

Facilities

Futsal is one of the main sport activities in the village. However, there is no futsal

court available in this village. The villagers have applied for a futsal court from

the government since 1 year ago but there is no response so far. The villagers hope

that their application for a futsal court will be approved soon.

ENTREPRENEURSHIP OPPORTUNITIES

According to the villagers, they are now working on a project called „Projek

Pokok Pisang‟ (Banana plantation project). This project is supported by the

government to improve the villagers‟ standard of living. The size of land

provided depends on the ability of the villagers. Growing bananas is now an

important source of income for villagers.

Besides, there is a homestay hall which has been built for different

events/activities. The villagers can rent the hall for Malay weddings or any

festivals or celebration. The rental fee for homestay hall is RM100 per day.
