Backing up your Destiny for Schools Application database

Follett recommends that you back up your Destiny database on a daily basis. This ensures that all daily transactions, configuration, and setup information for Destiny is preserved should you need to restore. As soon as you import or convert your data into Destiny, Follett recommends that you begin backing up your database.

You'll need the following:

• Access to a network drive where you can save the backup • The Destiny Administrator or CircCatAdmin password that was entered during the

installation of Destiny (This can also be found in the \FSC-Destiny\fsc\bin\config.properties file)

• A CD or a USB drive for offsite storage (This is optional, but highly recommended.

Configuring the backup program

1. Open a text editor such as Notepad. 2. In Notepad, select File | Open. 3. Change the "Files of type" setting at the bottom of the Open dialog to "All Files." 4. Browse to the location where Destiny is installed and open the \FSC-Destiny\fsc\bin

directory. 5. Locate the osql_backup.bat.sample file. 6. Select and open the osql_backup.bat.sample file. 7. Scroll down to the section, "SET THIS VALUE:"

8. Next to "SET DESTINY_BACKUP_FOLDER=," replace "\\servername\destiny\backups" with the drive or path to the location where you want the backup files stored. You must enter the Destiny backup path here before you actually create a backup.

Examples: J:\Destiny-Backups\ \\myschoolserver\destiny\backups

Important: Make sure you enter a drive letter or path that is located on a computer other than the server hosting the Destiny database. If the Destiny server or its hard drive fails, you must have a copy of the database at another location for restoring.

9. Next to "SET CIRC-CAT-ADMIN PW" (password), replace "makeitso" with the Destiny Administrator password that you entered during the installation of Destiny. Record the path and password, and store them in a secure location.

10. Select File | Save As. 11. Change the "Files of type" setting at the bottom of the Save As dialog to "All Files." 12. Change the file name to "osql_backup.bat" (removing the ".sample"), and click Save.

The backup program is now ready for use.

When the backup runs, it creates a folder inside the backup folder you designated in step 8 of Configuring the backup program (above). It names the folder using the 3-letter abbreviation for the day of the week. For example, if the backup runs on Monday, it creates a folder named "Mon." Inside that folder is the Destiny backup file, destiny_backup.dat.

You can burn these directories to a CD or copy them to a USB drive to take them offsite over the summer.
