Roller Chain technology has evolved over the centuries. During this time new designfeatures and production processes have been introduced.

Fenner Roller Chain is the product of this technology.

Increased Fatigue Resistance

• Shot Peening of rollers and side plates

imparts beneficial fatigue resisting properties,

counteracting the onset of fatigue failure.

• Ball Swaged side plate holes improve the

hole quality and surface finish thus combating

fatigue failure.

• Deep Waisted side plates increase the

effective cross section of the side plate, thereby

providing additional resistance to fatigue failure.

Increased Wear Life

• Seam Oriented Bushes ensure that

seams are positioned away from the critical

bearing areas, extending wear life thus

reducing down-time.

• Case Hardened Pins increase resistance to

wear, further extending wear life.

• Solid Rollers evenly distribute working loads,

prolonging wear life.

Fit and Forget Reliability

Fenner Chain is preloaded to bed in all

component parts. This also acts as a final

100% quality check, enabling you to simply "fit

and forget" Fenner Chain.

Lubrication & Protection

Fenner Roller Chain is pre-lubricated for protection

against corrosion and contamination. The light

mineral oil used provides an initial lubrication,

however, Fenner Power Transmission Distributor

recommend that all chains should be appropriately

lubricated prior to operation. Fenner Roller Chain

is wrapped in a protective covering and is boxed

in 5 metre lengths.

SRoller Chain Drive Selection

SELECTION

(a) Service Factor

From Table 1, determine the service factor whichis applicable to the drive.

(b) Design Power

Multiply the normal running power required by theservice factor. This gives the Design Power whichis used as the basis for selecting the drive.

(c) Chain Pitch

Refer to Table 2 (page 4) and trace to the rightalong the horizontal axis to the rev/min of the fastershaft. Trace upwards along the vertical axis to theDesign Power. At the point of intersection, notethe recommended chain pitch or pitches if thereis an overlap.

(d) Speed Ratio

Divide the speed of the faster shaft by the speedof the slower shaft to obtain the speed ratio.

(e) Sprocket Sizes

Refer to Table 4 (page 6) and select driving anddriven sprockets to match the Speed Ratio foundin step (d). See sprocket size recommendationson page 4.

(f) Power Rating

Refer to the power rating tables (page 5) for thepitch of chain chosen in step (c). Read down theleft hand column to the rotational speed of thefaster shaft. On this line read the power rating forthe simplex chain selected. These tables are for19 tooth sprockets, if a sprocket with a differentnumber of teeth is used, the power rating shouldbe multiplied by the Sprocket Factor from thetable at the bottom of page 5.

If the power rating figure does not equal orpreferably exceed the Design Power, calculatedin step (b), either select a larger pitch or a multiplestrand (duplex or triplex) chain.

Single strand chain offers the most economicalsolution, and should be used where possible. However, for limitations in space, high speed orsmooth running requirements a smaller pitch, duplex or triplex drive may be considered.

(g) Chain Length

To find the Chain length in pitches, use the formulabelow.

L = 2C + T + t + KP

P 2 C

L = Length of chain in pitches.C = Centre distance in mm.P = Pitch of chain in mm.T = Number of teeth on large sprocket.t = Number of teeth on small sprocket.K = Factor from Table 3 (page 6).

The calculated number of pitches should berounded up to an even, whole number of pitches. If the centre distance can not be adjusted, to allowfor the use of an even number of pitches, it maybe necessary to use an offset or cranked link, inwhich case the chain power rating will need to bereduced, consult Fenner Power TransmissionDistributor. Recalculate the exact centre distancerequired for the adjusted number of pitches. Forrecommended centre distance, refer to Table 5below.

If a jockey or tensioning sprocket is used add anextra 2 pitches.

To obtain the chain length, multiply the number ofpitches by the pitch of the chain.

Length of chain in feet = LP

EXAMPLE

Select a chain drive to transmit 1.5 kW from agearbox running at 80 rev/min and driven by adirect-on-line electric motor to a uniformly loadedconveyor drive shaft which is required to run atapproximately 40 rev/min for 12 hours per day.Gearbox output shaft is 35mm and the headshaftis 65mm diameter.

(a) Service Factor

From Table 1 the Service Factor is 1.2.

(b) Design Power

= 1,5 x 1,2 = 1,8 kW.

(c) Chain Pitch

By referring to Table 2 (page 4), the intersectionof design power and the rev/min of the faster shaftindicates a 16B 1” pitch chain.

(d) Speed Ratio

80

40 = 2:1

(e) Sprocket Size

From Table 4 (page 6) sprockets of 19 and 38teeth give a ratio of 2:1.

(f) Power Rating

The power ratings for 16B chain are given on page5. The required power rating from step (b) is 1.8kW. For a 19T driver sprocket, running at 80 rev/minute, the power rating for 16B-1 simplex chain

is 3.79 kW. As this exceeds the required designpower the selection is satisfactory.

If space limitations demand smaller sprocketdimensions, an alternative selection would be touse 12B-2 duplex chain which has a power ratingof 2.11 kW at 80 rev/min.

(g) Chain Length

Recommended centre distance for 16B-1 chainis 1000 mm Table 5 below.

Therefore the chain length as per selection step(g) (chain length) is 108 pitches including aconnecting link.

Rev/min of FASTER SHAFT

GENERAL RECOMMENDATIONS ON SPROCKET SIZES19 teeth and above —

Sprockets running at medium to maximumspeeds on normal applications (see powerratings for speeds on page 5).

17 teeth —

Permissible to use this sprocket on very smallpitches ie, 8mm and 3/8". Refer to section above, but should be restricted to slow speed drives(see power ratings for speeds on page 5).

15 teeth or less —

Must be avoided unless shaft speed is below100 revs/min.

23 teeth and above —

Recommended for impulse applications.

When ratios are low, the use of sprockets with highnumbers of teeth minimises joint articulation, chainpull and bearing loads. If a small number of teeth areused on high speed, high load applications, hardening of teeth should be considered. Ratios over7:1 are not recommended for single strand drives. Inall drives where ratios exceed 5:1 the designershould consider using compound drives formaximum service life.

On drives where ratios exceed 3:1 the shaft centredistance should not be less than the sum of thesprocket pitch circle diameters.

For drives with vertical shafting always use multi-strand chains.

AMERICAN STANDARD ROLLER CHAINS

Note: Refer to Fenner Power Transmission Distributor fordimensional details of ANSI "H" Series multiple strand chain

"H" SERIES ROLLER CHAINSANSI “H” Series chains are dimensionally identical toANSI standard chains except that the sideplates arethicker. The heavier side plates provides some additionalfatigue resistance. They are primarily intended forapplications where occasional shock loads are likely tocause fatigue failures in the chain. Whilst there is anincrease in tensile strength, the wear life of the casehardened pins remains the same as for standard chain.

Simplex “H” series chains operate on standard ANSIsprockets. Multiple strand “H” chain require non-standard ANSI sprockets because of the thicker sideplates.

"SH" SERIES ROLLER CHAINSANSI “SH” series chains are identical to “H” seriesbut they have a different pin material, which is throughhardened. The surface hardness is less than that ofthe carburised pins in the ANSI standard and ANSI “H”series chains but through hardened pins provideadditional fatigue resistance, at some slight sacrificein wear life.

Simplex “SH” series chains operate on standard ANSIsprockets. Multiple strand “SH” series chain requirenon-standard ANSI sprockets because of the thickerside plates.

Standard pack size is 5 metres (16.4 feet).

Material: AISI 304 Stainless Steel for optimum corrosion resistance, havingregard for tensile strength and wear life considerations. Stainless steel chain isnot as hard or as strong as carbon steel chain. AISI 304 Stainless Steel mayhave some slight residual magnetism due to cold working of the pins, bushesand rollers in manufacture. For applications where non-magnetic chain is requiredconsult Fenner Power Transmission Distributor.

BS & ANSI CHAINS WITH ATTACHMENTSThe following attachments, for British and ANSI chains, conform to Fenner dimensional standards, which are generally the ISO “Standard”. Otherchain manufacturers have their own “standard” dimensions for attachments which can vary dimensionally from the Fenner standard. Beforeordering any chains with attachments the critical dimensions of platform height, hole diameter and hole centres should be checked to ensure thatthe Fenner standard meets your requirement. Should you require attachments to other manufacturers “standards” please advise us as, we cansupply to other dimensional standards. Certified drawings of Fenner attachments are available upon request.

CHAINS WITH EXTENDED PINS

D1 D3

The following extended pins, for British and ANSI chains, conform to Fenner dimensionalstandards, which are generally the ISO “Standard”. Other chain manufacturers have theirown “standard” dimensions for extended pins which can vary dimensionally from the Fennerstandard. Before ordering any extended pin chains, the critical dimensions of extendedlength and pin diameter should be checked to ensure that the Fenner standard meets yourrequirement. Should you require extended pins to other manufacturers “standards” pleaseadvise us as we can supply to any dimensional standard. Duplex and Triplex pin lengths canbe supplied upon request.

In addition to the standardised chains detailed in this catalogue, many other chains are available from Fenner, via the Fenner PowerTransmission Distributor, either ex-import or of local manufacture. These include specialised chains for such industries as Timber, Pulp andPaper, Sugar Milling, Fertilizer, Earth-moving, Bottling, Water Treatment and many other more general industries.

Should you have a requirement for a chain that is not shown in the catalogue, our representatives would require the following information:1. Chain number, if available, or2. Detailed drawing, or3. A sample (preferably unused) or4. Access to the chain, for detailed sketch, or5. Basic dimensions and strength requirements.

SelectionShould you require our assistance in recommending a suitable chain for a new installation, or an existing conveyor/elevator which is notsatisfactory, we would require the following information:a. Type of conveyor or elevatorb. Conveyor speed and power requirements, if knownc. Approximate centre distance between shaftsd. Space limitations, for sprocket sizese. Mass, size, shape and nature of material conveyedf. Method of feed and dischargeg. Operating conditions i.e. Hrs/day, temperature, lubrication, etc.h. Attachment type and spacings, where knowni. Take-up arrangementj. Any further helpful information

SPROCKETSSprockets and traction wheels can be manufactured to order, for any chain shown in this catalogue and for any special chain supplied byFenner.

Should Fenner be supplying the corresponding chain, we would need to know:a. The number of teeth or maximum diameterb. Boss requirements, either one side or centralc. Bore size and keyway details, where requiredd. Material requirements, if not standard mild steele. Design, i.e. standard, split or split ring type

Should the chain already exist, but not be identifiable by a chain number, the following basic chain dimensions would be required:1. Chain pitch2. Roller (or bush) diameter3. Width inside chain linkplates, from inner link4. Linkplate height

CHAIN ATTACHMENTSStandard A or K type attachments are normally held in stock, for the standard range of chains. Various types of special attachments can bemanufactured to order and welded to any of our steel conveyor or elevator chains. Please enquire.

Welded steel mill chains are designed for heavy-duty conveyor service. They readily copewith shock loads and abrasive conditions; hence, they are widely used in the forest products, pulp and paper, and similar industries where demanding operating conditions are common.

Welded steel chains are frequently used to replace cast pintle chains and combination chainswhen application requirements are increased. The smaller sizes can also be used forslow-speed power transmission drives.

Welded steel mill chains are available in two series. The W series consists of steel links withoffset sidebars, coupled together by heat-treated pins. The WH series, with heat-treatedlinks and pins, is preferred when additional resistance to abrasion is required. This heattreating process gives the chain extra protection against shock and impact loading and wear.

Several attachments are available to suit a variety of conveyor and elevator applications.

Flat on pin end mates with D-shaped pitchhole to provide a mechanical lock in additionto an interference fit.

Heat-treated pins resist wear. Three-diameterdesign simplifies coupling, yet assures aninterference fit with pitch holes.

Sidebars and barrels held in accuratealignment and welded in one continuousoperation. Uniform links for balanced loaddistribution.

Controlled forming of riveted head providesuniform clearances between links, assuringfree articulation.

Precision-spaced pitch holes punched byprogressive, automatic machinery. Holesaccurately sized to close tolerances to assureuniform pitch control.

Other sizes of Offset Sidebar and Heavy Industrial Drives can be supplied to order.Sprockets for Rotary Chains are produced by us with standard tooth profile.Dimensions are nominal, for reference purposes only.

RO offset sidebar roller chains are manufactured to close limits and are designed for heavyduty drive service at speeds up to 305 m/min. Depending on chain size, they are capable oftransmitting as high as 150 to 370 kW.

These rugged, all-steel chains are suitable for a wide variety of drive applications wheredifficult operating conditions prevail. Hence, they are commonly used for the propel andcrowd drives on cranes and shovels, for drum drives on transit mixer trucks, and for driveson heavy duty conveyors and processing equipment.

Most RO drive chains have heat-treated sidebars of either medium carbon or alloy steel.Sidebar pitch holes are accurately sized and spaced to assure interference fits with pins andbushings and close control of chain pitch.

Joint parts are uniformly sized to provide proper operating clearances. Pins are heat-treatedfor high strength and wear life. Full-round bushings are hardened to resist shock and wear.Rollers are processed to withstand sprocket tooth impact.

The live bearing areas of these drive chains are carefully proportioned to achieve even loaddistribution and long wear life. Most of these chains are pre-stressed to further enhancetheir resistance to fatigue and wear.

Pins, bushings and rollers made of steel andhardened for superior wear resistance.

Balanced design provides maximum livebearing area.

Rollers are accurately machined for correctoperating clearances.

Pitch hole locations closely controlled toassure accurate pitch.

Pins and bushings locked against rotation insidebars by controlled press fits.

INSTALLATION NOTES• Shafts must be parallel with bearings and

supporting structures of sufficient rigidityto maintain true alignment.

• Mount sprockets as close as possible tobearings.

• Check correct alignment of each sprocketby use of a straight edge.

Roller chain can be used in practically anyposition provided the shafts are parallel. Onfixed centre drives the effect on the slackstrand must be carefully considered.

Where the slack strand is nearly vertical, orwhere torque variation causes wave or whipin the chain, an idler must be used to take upthe excessive slack. The idler shouldpreferably be near to the larger sprocket inthe drive, located on the outside of the slackstrand of the chain. Where layout makes thisimpossible it is permissible to locate the idleron the inside of the chain.

LUBRICATIONEffective lubrication is essential in order toensure optimum wear life from any chain.

To be effective it must form a film of lubricantbetween the wearing parts, (the pin andbush), of the chain. It has therefore to be ofsuitable viscosity and be delivered to the gapbetween the sideplates such that it canpenetrate into the space between the pin andbush. The viscosity, amount and type oflubricant is governed by the size of chain andthe operating conditions involved. Oil willonly penetrate into the bearing area of thechain when the chain is slack, therefore oilshould be delivered to the slack strand justafter the driver sprocket.

High speed drives are especially critical. These generally require a continuous streamof lubricant applied across the full chain widthin order to act as a coolant as well aslubricating the bearing area.

Three basic lubrication methods arerecommended for use with Fenner RollerChain.

TYPE 1 Drip Feed (for linear chainspeeds up to 1 mtr/sec.)

Oil drops directed between the side plategaps with a drip feed lubricator. Brushapplicators may also be used, provided theyare positioned to ensure that the oil iscorrectly delivered to the gap between theside plates. Volume and frequency should besufficient to prevent discolouration of thelubricant in the chain joints. Any

discolouration of the lubricant or of the pinwill indicate insufficient lubricationpenetrating into the bearing area. Airmovement, due to the motion of the drive, can disturb and mis-direct the oil drops, therefore, with due regard for safety, checkthe applicator while the drive is running.

TYPE 2 Oil Bath or Disc Lubricator (forlinear chain speeds up to 6mtrs/sec.)

With oil bath lubrication the lower strand ofchain runs through an oil sump. With thechain running, the oil level in the sump shouldimmerse the chain at its lowest point. Theoil level and condition of the oil should bechecked periodically to ensure sufficientvolume of oil is present and that it has notemulsified or become contaminated.

A disc or oil slinger may also be used. Inwhich case the disc picks up oil from thesump and deposits it on the chain, usuallythrough a trough. The chain operates abovethe oil level. The diameter of the disc shouldbe sufficient to ensure a rim speed between3 and 15 m/s.

TYPE 3 Pump and Sump (for highspeed drives).

Oil is pumped from the sump by a circulatingpump capable of delivering a constant streamof oil, evenly distributed across the full widthof the chain. The oil should be supplied onthe inside of the chain loop and at the lowerstrand, when chain speeds exceed 100 m/s.

CHAIN TENSIONChains should be fairly tight at installationwith only a small amount of slack. Withvertical drives the chain should be kept snug. After the first few weeks of operation,re-check chain tension and adjust ifnecessary.

FIXED CENTRE APPLICATIONSAn idler sprocket is generally recommendedfor fixed centre drives. It should be positionedon the slack side as close to the largersprocket as feasible. The tensioning sprocketshould have a minimum of three teethengaged and be a minimum of four linksaway from the nearest sprocket.

THESE CHAINS AND BELTS LASTEDONLY 70% AS LONG AS THEY SHOULD HAVE

Tensioning Devices

It's a fact. Chains and belts that are not kepttaut may only last 70% as long as theyshould. And that kind of inefficiency can addup to lots of unnecessary maintenance anddowntime.

These self-adjusting tensioners can add upto 30% more operating life to chains andbelts.

Their unique rubber inserts provide apretension force that allows the tensioner

arm to deflect up to 30° eitherside of its normal position. Thisforce not only gives thetensioner its ability to self-adjust to constant stretchingof chains and belts, but it alsoacts as a shock absorber to

reduce wear on drive bearings and shafts.

And they‘re easy to mount (one bolt);maintenance free (no lubrication); and they'reavailable in 7 different sizes.

For applications on “blind” frame structures. The adjustment of the tension is made asdescribed for type SE, but final fixation withhexagonal key on front bolt.

CENTRAL FIXING

Tensioning elements are fitted centrally on asufficiently strong, flat part of the machine. If a direct mounting is not possible, werecommend to use the support type WS.

POSITIONING, ANGLE TORSIONSCALE

The angle torsion scale “V” on the tensionerhousing always shows the pre-tensioningangle. The positioning notch “P” on thehousing flange allows easy re-adjustment ofthe pre-tensioning level when acorresponding mark is set up on the supportor the machine part.

CHAIN TRACK

The chain tension sprocket, as well as thechain rider, is held between 2 nuts “C”. Thechain track can be set exactly by adjustingwithin the range R. Locknut “B” is alwaystight.

Z ARRANGEMENT

If chain tension sprockets/chain riders ortensioning rollers are mounted on the outsideof the lever, the spacing “Z” should be aslittle as possible. The max. tension F shallthen not exceed 50% (=20° of pre-tension).

NORMAL POSITIONING

Tensioning elements are always fitted on theslack side, as close as possible to the bigwheel and guide the chain from the outerside. The arm position of the tensionershould be ideally as parallel as possibleto the chain drive.

REVERSIBLE CHAIN DRIVES

On reversible chain drives, tensioningelements must be placed on both sides. Anoversizing of the tensioning elements isrecommended for reversible function sincethey require more pressure on load and slackside, due to motion change.

STorque Limiters

The Fenner Torque Limiter is a protective Device that limits the torque transmittedin a drive system by slipping when the torque demand exceeds a preset value asa result of shock loads, overloads or machine jams. It automatically re-engageswhen the overload is removed. No resetting is required. FennerTorque Limitersprevent machine damage and eliminates costly downtime.

Fenner Torque Limiters utilize spring loaded friction surfaces for their operationand slip torque is preset by adjustment of the spring force using the adjustmentnuts and bolts.

Fenner Torque limiters can be used with a sprockets, gear, sheave or flange plate

SELECTION

1: Determine the required slip torque from the loading conditions or fromthe design strength of the machine. If the loading conditions of the machine areunknown, set the required slip torque of the torque limiter to 1, - 2 times thetorque that the motor producers on the shaft where the torque limiter is mounted.

2: Select a torque limiter that has enough torque range and bore range.

3: Determine the proper bushing length from the thickness of the centremember to be inserted between the friction surfaces. Always choose the largestbushing which does not exceed the width of the centre member as per "S" max. inthe dimension table.

CENTRE MEMBER

1: The centre member should be machined on its friction surface to obtainthe rated torque and be free from rust, scale and oil. Surface finish recommendedis RA1.6. If the centre member is not in accordance with these specifications, theslip torque be erratic.

2: Bore of the centre member to be machined is shown in the table below. Also minimum numbers of sprocket teeth to be used and bushing length to bechosen are listed in this table.

TORQUE SETTING

Torque setting of the torque limiter is achieved by tightening or loosening theadjustment bolts and or the adjustment nut. For torque adjustment of TL50 throughTL89, an adjustment nut is provided, and for TL127 through TL178 adjustmentbolts are provided.

The torque setting can be made after mounting the torque limiter on the shaft. Theprocess is:

For TL50 through TL89,First: rotate the adjustment nut tightly by hand so that the disk spring fits theplate. Then: tentatively tighten the nut by about 60 degrees with a wrench.

For TL127 through TL178,First: rotate the nut for fixing the disk spring to the plate and then tighten eachadjustment bolt by about 60 degrees. Then: if the torque limiter slips under normalloading conditions, tighten the nut (forTL50 ~ TL89) or the bolts (for TL127 ~ TL178)gradually until the torque limiter stops slipping. Always tighten (or loosen) thebolts equally. Try this adjustment several times to find the proper torque settingfor the machine. For your guidance, the chart below shows the relationship betweenthe effective angle and the preset torque.
