Step 1. Transferring the image

On the second last page of this PDF is the line image of the baby. Print this out to A3 size. Shade the backside with a 6B pencil. Turn the page over . Tape it into position on the canvas panel and re-trace the line work with a ball point pen. Remove sheet.

Due to the small amounts ofpaint being used it is difficult

to suggest quantities regardingratios. So some experimentingwill be required in mixing the

colours. On mixing, make smallincremental additions to build the colour slowly. This way you won’t

ruin the mix.

Step 2. Tinting the canvas

Squeeze out some Titanium White, Mid Yellow, Cadmium Red and Phthalo Green paint. Mix these together with the palette knife to create a Yellow Ochre colour. The colour is not that important as it will be painted over. Next mix in some fluid linseed medium so that it is the viscosity of cream. Paint this over the canvas. Ensure that the drawing can be seen beneath the coat. If the pencil lines cannot be seen add more medium to increase the transparency. Let this dry.

Note: Acrylic paint can be used in this stage. Acrylic paint dries very quickly and you will be able to start painting straight away.

Note:

.

Before you begin, it is recommended you view the acconpanying video that you can find at www.montmarte.net.

Step 3. Painting the background

Squeeze out some Titanium White, Mid Yellow, Cobalt Blue and Ultramarine Violet paint. Create a Sky Blue with Titanium White and Cobalt Blue. Paint the Blue over the background, cutting in around the baby. Ensure the coat is thin. Then blend the colours on the palette into this Blue background. Use small amounts of paint and feather it in so there are no sharp edges. Make the area where the light is coming from on the right is quite White, and the opposing edge, more on the Violet side.

Step 4. The grisaille

A grisaille is a mono chromatic under painting consisting of Black to Whites with Greys. So squeeze out some Black and White paint. Create a Mid Grey. On the last page of the PDF is a mono tone [Black and White] image of the finished painting. Use this for reference on this step, and start to lay your tones in. It is better to lay this mid tone in and add the darks and lights to it. Work in stages for example, first do the body, then do the arm and so on. This way you don't have to leave an area half rendered, as you need the paint to be ‘wet’ to blend it. In regards to drying, Mont Mart Water Mixable Oil Paint dries slightly quicker than Traditional Oils. So one has sufficient time to blend the paint together. The main trick here is to lay in the tones and blend them so the tonal transitions are smooth.

Note:

In this project I have only laid down 1 Grasille coat, but the masters laid a second one down over the top after the initial one had dried. I have ommitted this step. The paint was mixed to a half paste with linseed oil to make it slightly translucent. This created even more depth. This half past coat was called a Velatura. If you want to add this Velatura coat then feel free.

Step 5. Top coating the background

In this step we re-lay the same colours in over the background that were used in the first coat, but with the addition of linseed oil medium. I would suggest a 1:1 ratio of oil to paint. This is what gives the coat a translucent luminosity. Add a cast shadow under the baby with Ultramarine Violet and blend this into the background.

Step 6. Mixing a skin tone

The last coat is glazing the skin tone, and this is what really makes the painting come alive. First we must create a convincing skin tone. So lay out some Titanium White, Mid Yellow, Orange, Cadmium Red, Phthalo Green and Cobalt Blue paint. When mixing skin tone it is best to do it in stages and slowly add paints in small proportions. This way you don’t run the risk of ruining your tone and taking it ‘beyond’ the stage of being able to adjust it. And having to throw out paint is a cardinal sin! The first stage is to create a Yellow Ochre. So create a well of White and add Yellow, Orange and Cadmium Red. Don’t be to heavy handed with the Red as you dont want it overly pink, and red has great tinting strength. At this stage you should have a dark peachy colour.. To this add the Pthalo Green and the Cobalt Blue paint. This will turn the mix a brown hue, if you need to, add some more yellow to bring it into the Yellow Ochre Hue. Seperate this mix and create a second well and to this add more Titanium White and a touch of Orange paint. Then seperate this and create a new well , fine tune this new well with Red and more White if needed. It is helpful to look at the skin tone on your hand for real reference. Just keep going with little refinements. And you will get there, just take your time. When you are happy with the colour pour some medium beside the paint well. Ensure you don’t pour it directly into the mix as you want to be able to have differing viscosities of paint. This way you can drag the medium into the paint as

Step 7. Applying the skin tone glaze

One must bear in mind that skin is not just 1 colour. A lot of the tonal work has already been done but there is a few tricks to do to ensure the skin tone glaze looks convincing. The first is the areas of skin in highlight should be slightly more opaque and those areas of shadow, more translucent, so the dark tone can be seen. The glaze over the shadow areas should have a tinge of Red in there also. Suffice to say the glazing process is similar to the Grisaille in as much as one lays in the appropriate tones and blends them together with a clean brush. It is best to apply a thin coat and ‘drag’ the colour around. Always use a soft Taklon brush for this stage. I find flat brushes and large filbert brushes work best for applying glazes. Refer to the last image of the finished painting for reference if you need it.

Although Mont Marte H2o Water Mixable oils can be diluted with water,

this can cause the colour to go cloudy. As such we recommend that

a linseed medium be used for thispurpose. H2o Water Mixable Paint

accepts traditional Oil Paint Linseed based mediums also, and can be mixed with water based emulsions

such as Acrylic and Gouache paint.
