Иван Ценов Ангелов е роден във Враца.На шест години тръгва на училище и през 1900 г. завършва

Врачанското шесткласно училище и става учител за една година.На 16 години обучава едновременно деца от четири класа.През 1903 г. завършва Софийската мъжка гимназия.

Ivan Tsenov Angelov was born in Vratsa.

He started going to school when he was 6 years old and he finished the six-grade school in Vratsa in 1900.

After graduating from this school, he worked as a teacher for one year and taught children from four different grades at the same time.

In 1903 he finished The Male High School in Sofia.

През 1904 е студент по математика в Софийския университет, където учи пет семестъра.

За участие в протест срещу царя е изключен . Шести семестър завършва през 1907 г. в Белград.

През 1907-1908 г. Иван Ценов е студент в Загреб, след което се завръща в родината и завършва с отличие специалността математика.

In1904 he was already a student of Mathematics at Sofia University, where he studied five semesters. He was expelled because he took part in a protest against the Bulgarian monarch. He finished the sixth semester in 1907 in Belgrad.

In 1907-1908 Ivan Tsenov was a student in Zagreb and after that he returned to Bulgaria where he finished his studies in Mathematics with honours.

най-престижното и високо научно звание в България.

On the 16th November 1928 he was elected Academician – the highest and most prestigious academic rank in Bulgaria.

Две години специализира в Париж.

Едва на 25 години става доцент, а от 1922 г. е професор и ръководител на катедра по аналитична механика.

He spent two years in Paris, specializing in his studies.

 He became a Reader when he was only 25 years old and in 1922 he became a Professor and Head of the Department of Analytical Mechanics.

Бил е декан на Физико-математическия факултет на Софийския университет.

Създал е над 100 научни труда в областта на аналитичната динамика, вариационните принципи на механиката и диференциалната геометрия.

Работил е върху движението на велосипеда, но никога не е карал велосипед.

He was a Dean of the Department ofPhysics and Mathematics at Sofia University.

He created over 100 scientific works in the field of analytical dynamics, variation principles of mechanics and differential geometry.

He worked on the movement of the bicycle, but he never rode a bike.

През 1897 г. завършва класическия отдел на варненската гимназия.

През1898 г. се записва във Висшето училище в София, специалност математика и физика. He was born in Shumen.

In 1897 he finished the classical department of the High school in Varna.

In 1898 he enrolled the School of higher education in Sofia to study mathematics and physics.

He did translations from French and thus he earned his own living during his studies.

He won a scholarship for his excellent grades.

Специализира астрономия в Мюнхен, Хайделберг, Ница (1906 – 1909) и Париж (1909 – 1910).

През 1907 г. Кирил Попов посещава лекциите по небесна механика на Анри Поанкаре.

Попов открива неточност във формулите на Поанкаре за движението на астероид 108 Хекуба.

He specialized in astronomy in Munich, Heidelberg, Nice (1906-1909) and Paris (1909-1910)

In 1907 Kiril Popov attended lectures in celestial mechanics delivered by Anry Poankare. Popov found inaccuracy in Poankare’s formulas for the movement of the asteroid 108 Hecuba.

Доктор на парижкия университет (1912).

През 1912 г. той корегира сгрешените формули и защитава докторска дисертация по темата още през лятото.

Това е нечуван прецедент в историята на Сорбоната - за по-малко от шест месеца да се свикат всички академици и да се изслуша младият български учен.

Doctor of Paris University in 1912.

He corrected the mistaken formulas and deffended a dissertation on the same subject for his Doctor’s degree during the summer of the same year.

This is an unheard precedent in the history of the Sorbon – for less than 6 months all the academicians were summoned in order to give a hearing to the young Bulgarian scientist.

През 1914 година е избран за ръководител на катедрата по диференциално и интегрално смятане при Софийския университет.

Работи в областта на балистиката (движение на снаряд вън от цевта на оръдие) в Гьотинген и Берлин (1920 – 1921).

Чете лекции по небесна механика и балистика в Парижкия университет и университетите в Берлин, Рим, Виена, Белград, Гьотинген, Мюнхен, Хамбург, Торино и други.

In 1914 Kiril Popov was chosen to be in charge of the department of differential and integral calculus at Sofia university.

He worked in the field of ballistics (the movement of a shell outside the barrel of a cannon) in Geutingen and Berlin (1920-1921)

He read lectures in celestial mechanics and ballistics in Paris university as well as the universities in Berlin, Rome, Vienna, Belgrad, Geutingen, Munich, Hamburg, Torino, etc.

Научните му интерси и постигнатите резултати се отнасят главно към приложенията на математиката в други науки - механика и физика.

The scientific work of Academician Kiril Popov encompasses more than 150 publications.

His scientific interests and the results he achieved refer mainly to putting mathematics into practice in other sciences – mechanics and physics.

This finds explanation in his ideas about the unity of mathematics and nature.

Кирил Попов е избран за академик през 1947

година.

За големите му заслуги и постижения в областта на науката Парижката академия на науките му присъжда наградата “Монтион” за резултатите му в областта на балистиката (1926) и наградата "Анри дьо Парвил" (1957).

В България два пъти е удостояван със званието "Народен деятел на науката".

Kiril Popov was elected Academician in 1947.

For his special merits and achievements in the field of science Paris Academy of Sciences awarded him with the prize “Montion” for his results in the field of ballistics (1926) and the prize “Ánry de Parvil” (1957).

In Bulgaria he was twice conferred the honorary title of “National scientific worker”.

Той е един от първите, които се включват в активното създаване и развитие на Математическия институт на БАН.

He was among the first who actively took part in establishing and developing the Institute of Mathematics at Bulgarian Academy of Sciences.

Boyan Petkanchin finished the elite Male High School of Plovdiv with distinction.

He was taken up with studying insects. Later, he showed a marked interest in spherical astronomy and higher mathematics.

He studied stenography from an early age and kept using it systematically till the end of his life.

He had a perfect command of German language.

student he was able to solve every math problem immediately and he was a master at solving difficult and non-standard problems.

After his first year at university he was awarded first prize of 500 levs by the Council of Lecturers.

He graduated with honours.

Като студент можел да решава веднага всички задачи и бил майстор в решаването на трудни нестандартни задачи.

Още след първата учебна година е удостоен от Съвета на преподавателите с първа награда от 500 лв.

Дипломира се с пълно отличие.

През 1934 г. специализира в Хамбургския университет.

Отлично полага докторския си изпит в Германия и е удостоен с научната степен “доктор на природните науки”.

In 1934 he specialized at the University of Hamburg.

He took his exam with an excellent mark and he was conferred the scientific degree ‘Doctor of nature sciences’.

От 1941 г. започва и чете в продължение на 30 години новата математическа дисциплина „Основи на математиката".

В резултат от изследванията му, в България се развива ново геометрично направление — двуосната геометрия и нейните обобщения.

Since 1941 he had been reading for 30 years the new mathematical branch of science “Fundamentals of Mathematics”.

As a result of his research, a new trend of geometry developed in Bulgaria- biaxial geometry and its general conclusions.

През 1966 г. е удостоен със званието “Академик”.

Член е на Изпълнителния комитет на Балканския математически съюз, Председател на Българското физико-математическо дружество, Председател на комисии по образованието.

Негови възпитаници са изтъкнати български математици, преподаватели от Софийския и Пловдивския университет.

In 1966 he was honoured with the title Academician.

He was a member of the Executive committee of the Balkan mathematical union, Chairperson of the Bulgarian association of physics and mathematics, Chairperson of commissions in education.

His former students are eminent Bulgarian mathematicians, lecturers at Sofia and Plovdiv Universities.

for initiating the International Olympiad in Informatics (IOI). The

first International Olympiad was held in Pravets, Bulgaria.

форум.

On the 9th October 2012, he was honoured with the highest distinction of this

forum – The Prize of the International Olympiad in Informatics.
