WHAT MAKES A GOOD BATH- ROOM?

”When it comes to technical innovation, Hansgrohe is a company with a long-standing tradition. When did the area of design become part of this? Was it a logical consequence?

Axor was established in 1993, but even before that time Hansgrohe had already produced technically impressive products including Showers and mixers. Of course, these also looked good. In other words, design has always been a key area at Hansgrohe. By exchanging ideas with other designers we wanted to complement our ideas on the bathroom of the future with visions, lifestyles and trends that go beyond the product. That gives life and emotions to the room. This is something that we cannot do alone. And it is something that cannot be achieved by just one designer. We therefore trust in several creative designers.

You have already utilised the services of many prestigious designers. Do you appoint a new designer for each collection?

We now partner with multiple international designers and architects with whom we hold regular open discussions. Some have already developed two or three collections with us.

How much freedom do you give the designers?

We put our full trust in our designers’ visions and powers of innovation. When we first spoke to one of the most famous designers of our time, we truly experienced the big bang. The first complete bathroom with mixers, showers, wash basins, bath tub and WC was created from a single source. Philippe Starck’s bathroom. It was a revolution.

Since then, has it been about more than just mixers?

That’s right. It’s about the entire room, an atmosphere and above all, a new way of looking at life and how we use water in the bathroom. This way, it’s

advantageous if our designers are also interior designers or architects. In addition to the mixers and showers, we also work with them to develop the wash basins, bath tubs, accessories and, of course, general bathroom solutions.

You look for designers with different, sometimes even highly conflicting, styles and attitudes. What do you regard as fruitful cooperation with creative minds?

For Axor, the designer’s vision is at the fore. Designers should develop their own personal bathroom. We do not regard them as suppliers, but as creative partners with whom we can exchange ideas as equals. During this process, each of the partners offers their own expertise. From our perspective, this is our water and industrial bathroom expertise as well as a certain design culture.

To what extent have the requirements for bathrooms changed over the last few years and decades?

The bathroom is changing from a place of hygiene to a place for living. This is partly attributable to our lifestyle habits. In the past, we had extremely close ties to nature. Now, our lives are dominated by an urban world and hectic everyday situations. We therefore have a growing need for a sense of tranquillity and a natural experience. More and more people are discovering the bathroom as a place for relaxation and wellbeing. And it is not without a little pride that we believe we have made an important contribution to this. Antonio Citterio once said that we only have to stand under the shower for 30 seconds to get clean. So why do we shower for three or five minutes? Because it changes how we feel afterwards. Showering is like doing an hour of yoga. However, wellbeing also means using a great deal of water, which naturally poses a major technical challenge for us. After all, one thing is clear: we have to conserve the precious commodity of water. And so, we are certainly not going to get bored.

� As far back as 2005, Jean-Marie Massaud realised his ideal vision of a bathroom within the scope of the Axor WaterDream. For him, this is a symbiosis of the natural elements of fire, water, earth and air.

All new Axor collections start with a personal vision. For Jean-Marie Massaud, the bathroom is a living space in which technology disappears and the focus instead falls on emotional experiences and the associated comfort and convenience. In describing his WaterDream project, initiated within the scope of Axor 2005, he commented: “I visualise a lake in the heart of the countryside. I want to feel like I’m sitting by a camp fire,

listening to music and sipping champagne, and simply clear my mind.” A feeling of complete relaxation..

Jean-Marie Massaud starts by considering the room in which his occupier is residing. He defines wellbeing as a holistic concept and lets water, man and space melt into one.

During the design process, the vision of the dream bathroom develops into a harmonious work that combines architecture, materials, lighting and bathroom products.

All the creative partners that work with Axor think beyond the actual product and its pure functionality for personal hygiene purposes. Through discussions between the designers and architects, Axor develops different concepts for the room and its use.

Does a dream bathroom have to be large? “Not at all” insists Philippe Grohe in contradiction of the prevailing opinion that designer bathrooms cannot be created without a sizeable room. “It is not the size of the bathroom that determines the quality, but the basic elements that convey the idea of the room concept.” The designers’ central room and usage

concepts can also be realised in small rooms and thus consider people’s highly individual needs. There is good reason why most of the creative minds are also architects or interior designers and work with Axor to develop solutions and planning aids for small areas.

In Jean-Marie Massaud’s idea of the perfect bathroom, the resident brings the experience of nature into the home. In this regard, the designer first designs the room and then, in a second stage introduces the products whose design complements the idea of the nature-inspired room. The complete bathroom collection has therefore been designed in the characteristic organic style: pebbles, branches, logs and grass inspire an extraordinary collection. The body of the most striking product, the single lever mixer, resembles a blade of grass. Together with the archetypal shelf,

the mixer becomes a functional sculpture. In addition to the mixer, wash basin and bath tub, nature has also provided the inspiration for the accessories. Axor has developed a vanity box, candlestick, soap dish, vase, toothbrush tumbler and towel holder in line with the French designer’s sketches and desires. The towel holder cites Massaud’s philosophy as a branching tree, the vase celebrates the ritual use of water and the box and the candlestick resemble pebbles that would caress the hand.

“CLEAR, PURE AND BEAUTIFUL LIKE A NATURAL WATERFALL.”

In the Axor WaterDream, Massaud manifested the philosophy that a mixer’s technical aspects should be hidden in the background. He moves away from pure control units while also wanting to provide an additional benefit. So what does a mixer look like if it is more than just a tap? “What Massaud presented to us”, commented Philippe Grohe, “was absolutely futuristic and a little crazy.” But most of all, it was simply brilliant. Axor therefore did everything it could to turn his idea into a reality. “To

make the water flow quietly and smoothly out of the mixer’s spout, we had to completely re-design the interior workings of a mixer”, Horst Flieger, Head of the Hansgrohe Research and Development department, remembers. “Creating the optimum spray pattern was extremely fiddly.” To create this elegant water jet, the experts at the Hansgrohe spray laboratory had to incorporate highly sophisticated technology into the extremely flat plate. The result is clear: a mixer from which a beautiful waterfall flows; a particularly pleasant haptic experience that uses little water.

� The designer Jean-Marie Massaud and the Axor development team were involved in intensive discussions for months on end. They regularly met for coordination meetings. After a development period of more than three years, Axor Massaud was finally launched on the market.

At a first glance at the end product, the laborious manufacturing process is not evident. The designer item undergoes numerous individual stages and quality controls before it finds it place in an Axor Massaud bathroom.

� The start of an Axor Massaud mixer: currently still a raw and inconspicuous brass bar, the raw material melts in the furnace at almost 1,000 degrees. The liquid metal now takes on its typical form.

Design is not the only thing that shimmers. Every mixer and every shower is based on the roots of the company Hansgrohe, the demands of an innovative global player and a commitment to ensuring the best quality and manufacturing in Germany.

The designer brand’s specially designated plant is located in the heart of Hansgrohe’s head office site. The Axor plant in Schiltach, one of five production sites in Germany. Here, German engineering meets years of tradition to create the more than 5,000 different products in the Axor collections. Workmanship marked by design and technology.

A brief glance at the production processes quickly shows onlookers that the plant does not manufacture mass-made products. In the two-floor hall, employees work on the designer products in several shifts. It takes a great deal of handicraft to turn the designers’ visions into reality.

Their high requirements give rise to many different production stages. For example, these include precisely casting and cutting the mixers or subjecting the square-edged surfaces to even more intensive processing to ensure that they are optimally chrome-plated. The moulding blank is refined like a raw diamond in many individual stages until the final aesthetics are achieved. Even the base of the Axor Massaud mixer is hand-polished until it acquires a brilliant shine.

� The route into the polishing department: the as yet unrefined mixer is polished by hand. To ensure that the surface has an impressive shine, all flat surfaces and edges are manually smoothed.

� The mixer is placed in an electrolytic immersion bath: the body is still made from brass. In one of the most modern galvanic systems, Axor Massaud now receives a brilliantly shiny chrome layer that ensures that the mixer remains hard-wearing and durable. To this end, it bathes in several galvanic baths for up to an hour.

� A single Axor Massaud mixer comprises almost 30 individual components. In the end assembly department, the specialised Axor Massaud employees put all the parts together to create the finished product: the hoses and the cartridge – known as the mixer’s “motor” – disappear into the body, the complete jet former

is screwed into the metal plate and the handle is adjusted. No product leaves the factory on its worldwide travels without first being tested for leaks and an optimum spray pattern.

Jean-Marie Massaud’s philosophy of “nature-inspired design” is based on the idea of harmony between man, water and space. However, the interaction of design, technology and the careful use of our resources shapes every project. In this regard, we at Axor value the precious commodities of water and energy. It is no wonder that this is also why the designers chose to work with Axor.

Sustainability is a central topic that covers multiple aspects, including ecological, economical and social responsibility. A bathroom in which the resident should enjoy a sense of wellbeing for more than 20 years has high demands in terms of sustainability: a design that will outlive all fashion trends, durable materials and excellent innovative strength in matters of quality and technology.

It is most likely our location in the Black Forest that teaches Hansgrohe to respect nature, on which we have always been reliant. It is therefore extremely natural for us to responsibly use the elements of water and energy. In this regard, Hansgrohe has always regarded itself as a crusader of environmental protection – long before “sustainability” became a corporate buzz word.

Klaus Grohe, son of the company founder and long-standing Chair of the Supervisory Board, awakened the company and its employees to the need to use water responsibly: “Water is far more than just a consumer good. It is an elixir of life. It therefore deserves all of our respect and our consideration.” He was one of the first people in the industry to promote water-saving technology. He personally tested the pilot system for water treatment, on which the Pontos recycling system was based in 2001, in his own home. Used shower and bath water, known as grey water, is treated to become clear water and then made available for reuse for flushing toilets or in washing machines.

During galvanisation, for example, the production department in Schiltach is setting the standard regarding the respectful use of resources. The water and chemical consumption levels have been successfully reduced. Thanks to a special filter method, 90 % fewer surfactants infiltrate the waste water. This also notably and continually reduces our energy consumption and pollutant emissions. The company’s own solar power plant has generated 147,000 kWh of electricity every year since 1994 – enough energy to supply 45 single-family houses.

The prestigious architectural work towers over the Gulf metropolis like a native six-leaf desert flower. When the Khalifa Tower was inaugurated in January 2010, it broke all records. Currently the highest building in the world, it has 189 storeys, 900 apartments, 37 office levels and houses the Armani Hotel with 160 rooms and suites. More than 5,000 Axor Starck mixers play their part in the record.

MANDARIN ORIENTAL HOTELPATRICIA URQUIOLA DESIGNS THE NEW ADDRESS FOR EXCLUSIVE ACCOMMODATION IN BARCELONA

Opened in 2010, the Mandarin Oriental is located on the elegant Passeig de Gràcia shopping street, just a stone’s throw away from Gaudí’s famous Casa Batlló. The architects Carlos Ferrater and Joan Trias de Bes converted the 17,000 square metre site of the former Banco Hispano Americano into a luxury oasis. The limestone facade of the nine-storey building is largely retained thanks to extensive efforts. Only the entrance was given a more hotel-like architecture with a sense of moving along a hallway into the inner of the atrium. The former bank trading floor now houses a lounge and restaurant as well as the “Bankers’ Bar”. On the roof, the 600 square metre terrace provides a spectacular view over the European metropolis.

The Spanish-born, award-winning designer Patricia Urquiola was responsible for the hotel’s interior design. She emphasises the Asian roots of the Hong Kong hotel group and re-interprets the details with her European perspective. Her characteristic style fusion can be seen in every corner: abstract flowers blossom on an orange silk rug. Gold leaf clouds adorn the ceiling of the “Moments” restaurant. Golden grilles resemble the wrought-iron grilles found throughout the city and glimmering white wardrobes resemble Japanese hand-painted boxes. All 98 rooms and

suites are decorated in cream and white tones. Oak floorboards combined with soft plush carpets and designer furniture creates a refined, homely atmosphere – always with a little variation so that each room is unique.

POETRY RIGHT THROUGH TO THE BATHROOM

Patricia Urquiola stands for open-plan room design and the harmonious merger of the bedroom and bathroom. The Spaniard also uses a feminine touch to implement this philosophy in the Mandarin Oriental. Satin-finished glass walls act as screens without separating the areas too harshly. Organic shapes combined with the use of woods create a lively yet sensual atmosphere.

On the second basement level, the oriental spa offers 1,000 square meters of pure luxury. Far-eastern and oriental accents are harmoniously embedded into the purposefully dimly lit environment between the relaxation suites, Thai massage treatment rooms, several hot water baths, a sauna area and a Hammam.

The volcano-shaped, multi-purpose stadium blends into the landscape. Instead of designing a typical architectural structure, Jean-Marie Massaud designed a new human and economic system that respects the landscape and the environment. Cars are banished beneath the stadium. The multi-use stadium, with a seating capacity of 45,000 and children’s play areas, beauty salons, a climbing wall and roller blade track is becoming a meeting place for families. The nature-inspired architecture is also reflected in the design of the Axor Massaud collection.

Philippe Starck is the enfant terrible of designers and one of the best known creative minds of today. The Frenchman was launched to fame with a lemon squeezer in the form of a spider. He first made the headlines when he designed the private rooms of then French President François Mitterrand. Many people regard him as having a streak of genius, which regularly provokes with its playful, often spectacular style. Starck is quite simply Starck.

THE GENTLEMAN OF ITALIAN DESIGNAntonio Citterio shapes international design like few others.The Milan-based architect and designer’s creations are usually based on existing styles. “Above all else, I am an architect”, commented the analytical spirit, who takes his inspiration from modern life and living in the world’s cities. Citterio’s top priority is therefore always the space. The product comes second.

At 13, he designed his first piece in his father’s furniture workshop.At 18, he received a design award for a hand-made cupboard. At the age of just 22, he opened his first office, even before completing his architecture studies in Milan. Today, some fifty employees work on international architecture, interior and design projects: from the Milan metro to offices and hotels. Citterio’s work also stands for modern living design. In 2007, he received the title “Royal Designer” from the British Royal Society.

An interview with Andreas Haug and Tom Schönherr about logic, morality and magic.

They named their design office after the mythical phoenix, which burst into flames before rising from the ashes. Andreas Haug and Tom Schönherr have been designing the broadest range of products since 1987: from writing instruments to gymnastic competition equipment, mobile telephones to shower heads. They have received more than 400 design awards for their work.

What do you believe defines a good bathroom design? And what is bad design?Andreas Haug: Bathroom design is comparatively complex as it involves installed and durable products. If you compare these requirements to the short life of a mobile telephone, for example, bathroom products should function for a longer period and still bring joy to their users even after many years. The “sustainability” of the design and the use of water therefore play an important role. Bad design is anything that is non-functional and disingenuous.

What principles do you follow? Tom Schönherr: We have developed three basic values. The first is logic.

This means that designs must offer a good ease of use and functionality. Good design must also be sensible, sustainable and durable – this is our value of morality. The third value is magic – a design that is fascinating and desirable. For us, successful design is therefore the symbiosis of these three aspects.

To what extent have mixer design requirements changed? Do bathroom products today speak a different language to those in the past?Andreas Haug: Bathrooms underwent a fundamental change fifteen years ago and design started to play a greater role: mixers were no longer just functional objects; users also wanted them to be visually appealing. Mixers can take on a solo role and draw attention to themselves.

What is your connection to water?Andreas Haug: As a swimmer, I have an extremely personal connection to water. And as a designer, I ask myself: how can we save water? How can we use water carefully? Bathing has no great importance for me. I prefer showering. This has become far more convenient and far more relaxed.

What do you like about working with Axor?Andreas Haug: We have been working with Hansgrohe for 40 years and the excitement never ends. Hansgrohe has a sophisticated design culture that is continuing through the next generation. Philippe Grohe is a great sparring partner with an excellent understanding of design. We value the company’s innovative strength and enjoy the design freedom that is extended to us.

You have designed screens, fountain pens, laptops, mobile phones, printers, watches, glasses and even nut crackers. For which sector would you still like to design something?Tom Schönherr: As I do a great deal of sport, I am particularly excited by sporting equipment and products for the outdoor sector. Our “Phoenix Academy” enables us to freely design such items independently of actual assignments.

Is there a typical German (product) design?Tom Schönherr: Of course. The design “Made in Germany” still embodies the design virtues that were coined by the Bauhaus and Ulmer

schools. However, the strict functionalism demanded by these institutions is now passé. German design today also represents emotional values and has become more sensual.

What do you see as the future of bathroom design?Andreas Haug: The intelligent use of electronics is the topic of the future. For example, the use of electronics will eliminate the need to manually control hot and cold water. Water can be used in a more targeted manner whereby intelligent showering will be possible as we have no sense of how long we stand under the shower. We find it exciting that people experience this sense of ease and that it is of such high quality.

How can a bathroom be transformed into an elegant feel-good area?

Room-in-roomThe functional area including toilet and bidet is situated in the centre of the bathroom and this is also where the bulk of water-carrying installations are located. A transparent glass sliding door separates this from the feel-good area.

Feel-good areaDouble wash basins are integrated into the living area, offering ample opportunity to celebrate water and to relax.

DIVIDING INTO FEEL-GOOD AND FUNCTIONAL AREAS

With relaxation and well-being the overriding incentives, the bathroom needs to offer a better quality of life, it should be the ideal place to spend time. It is moving away from being a purely functional room, where it’s not just about getting clean, and moving more towards being a source of relaxation, a place where the soul is also cleansed. Dividing the bathroom

into functional and feel-good areas creates a sense of architectural calm and allows us to experience the richness of water. Transparent doors and large window fronts make for useful division and create a cosy ambience. Antonio Citterio has effectuated this room concept with the Axor Citterio collection (pp. 68/69).

What other materials and accessories emphasise the elegant character of the bathroom?

The use of noble materials, such as black and white marble, gives the room a timeless elegance. Noble home accessories make for a cosy ambience and give the bathroom that special effect – whether the floor plans are large or small.

The spatial concept of the separate feel-good and functional areas can also be implemented in the case of small floor plans:The segmentation concept can be implemented easily on small floor plans too. Transparent wall and door elements help with this. These divide the areas and help the room retain its sense of spaciousness.

A retreat for many different personalities

Opening up the bathroom to the bedroom creates free space that can be used in a variety of ways. The result is one spacious entity with fluent transitions – smoothly separated by a screen, which provides intimacy even with the opened-up space. A communicative space, providing a place where people can live side-by-side in harmony, yet at the same time offering an opportunity to retreat to somewhere private.

Separate areas within the bathroom cater to the individual needs of different personalities: Instead of the classic double wash basin, individually furnished wash basins facing each other provide the necessary privacy. In the two separate bath tubs, each person can adjust the temperature to whatever is ideal for their personal taste – while still being able to communicate with the other person.

Plants play an important role in this feel-good bathroom: as a privacy screen and a feel-good barometer.

Patricia Urquiola has implemented this fusion of bathroom and bedroom in her Axor Urquiola dream bathroom (pp. 106/107).

GlassGlass surfaces with graphical patterns serve as privacy screens. They also stimulate the imagination of the viewer and are playfully relaxing.

Which aspects emphasise the nature of the retreat?

The fusion of bedroom and bathroom can also be implemented for small floor plans. The filter area incorporating the shower is flooded with natural light, and the plants give it the aura of a conservatory. The paravent serves as a privacy screen with the added function of a radiator.


PlantsFoliage plants are the feel-good barometer within the bathroom and the natural point of contact with the outside world.

Harmony between man, nature, space and technology

The bathroom is transformed into a living environment. Here we can feel good. It is integrated into the rest of the home and is in harmony with the bedroom, both forming a single entity. Separated by a sliding door, both rooms merge seamlessly into one another. Users can enjoy an intimate experience with nature and water, in a spacious bathing and living environment. The free-standing bath tub evokes the sensation of floating on a lake. Wooden platforms make it appear as if you are on a beach, inviting you to linger a while. Natural materials on floor and wall bring a natural feel to the architecture of the room.

Jean-Marie Massaud was inspired by nature for his Axor Massaud bathroom. You can find the Axor Massaud bathroom on pp. 126/127.
