Operating priciple

AXON's J Series, Close Proximitytelemetry systems are designed tomeasure and transmit data reliably fromrotating objects such as driveshafts,gearwheels, pulleys etc. contactless.

Torque and temperature measurementsare just some of the applications.All systems are equipped with aninductive power supply between theStator and Rotor Units which eliminatesthe need for any battery on the shaft.

However, in special cases, each rotor unitcan be powered with battery if required.

The telemetry systems offer flexibledesign options even when space isvery limited.

We offer a design service forindividual measurement requirements.

AXON's Intelligent Power Transmission(IPT) offers unique flexibility compared toother telemetry systems.The inductive power supply is monitoreddynamically and constantly adjusted tomaintain optimum operating range - thiseliminates age and temperature relatedvariations in performance.In addition, due to the design of controlloop, the stator transmission coil can beformed to any shape or dimension from afew centimetres to 30cm or even more withno loss of signal quality.

In tightly enclosed environments, thetransmission coil can be connected tothe Stator Unit with extension wires upto 150mm. As the sensor element is notsensitive to metalic components, thesystem can cope with many difficultapplications - even gearboxmeasurements. In this case the StatorUnit can be mounted to the outside ofthe gearbox housing, while thetransmission coil is mounted inside -the data transmission is not affected bythe metalic environment no by oil flow.

For automotive drive shaft applications, which can have verylarge displacements due to suspension travel, specialisedinstallations can be required Thanks to the wide capacity ofthe inductive power supply, the transmission coil can easilybe designed as an oval shape.

Previous complex adjustments to the transmission coil is nolonger necessary, both, inductive and data transmissionwork effectively over a wide range.

AXON are constantly working to implement new system designs to meet customers' individual requirements. A lotof thought has gone into the design and all components within one product type use the same carrier frequency.This means that any existing Control Unit, Stator or Rotor Unit(s) can be swapped and operated without the needto any change settings or calibration.

Different Stator and Rotor Units are available for the J1 whichcan measure strain gauge (torque, force, pressure etc.) andtemperature (thermocouple Type K) signals.All systems have three basic configurations:

- The ring stator, suitable for most applications with shaftdiameters up to 30cm (optional larger diameters are alsopossible). Power can be supplied reliably and consistently toindividual vehicle shafts, even with very large displacements.

- The pickup stator, designed for very large shafts, allows easyinstallation, as no large transmission coil / ring needs to bemounted.

- The receiver stator option for a battery supplied Rotor Unit. If abattery is preferred to supply the Rotor Unit, the compact JX-SB01 can be used as a receiver unit without inductive supply inconjunction with a wire antenna in almost any conditions.

Many thousands of the 1-channeltelemetry AXON J1 are now being usedall over the world for wide range ofapplications.

A tiny rotor PCB is installed directly tothe test object, it then acquires the dataand transmits the signal to a stationaryreceiver unit. The signal is processedand is then available as an analoguevoltage signal which can be used forfurther data analysis. The simpleinstallation and the ability to supply therotor inductively, or by battery, makesthis system a very versatile solution forrotating applications.

The proven reliability of the AXON J series in miniature.

The J1D has a higher signal-bandwidth,of 2,5 Khz, thanthe J1 and a sampling rate of 10 kSa/s and an autozero function which works over the full measurementrange, makes it even more powerful. It can be switchedbeween the original and the offset-corrected signalanytime during the measurement.The rear housing features a self-locking power switchto prevent accidental disconnection of themeasurement system.Additionally a waterproof connector (Ip68) fitted to theStator Unit is standard for all of the digital systems.

The J1D Rotor Unit has either analuminium housing or a flexibleRotor Unit which in tightly enclosedinstallations, can be „wrapped“around the shaft.

The simultaneous measurement of a strain gauge signal, together with a temperature channel hasshown to be very useful. The J2DT was developed to meet these requirements.

The temperature is measured with high precision (see J1T and J4T) and reproduced together withthe signal of the strain gauge measurement by the control unit as a voltage signal.

With the recording oftemperature at the strain gauge,for example, any existingtemperature drift can beeliminated in the data evaluation.If the connections for thethermocouple are bridged on theRotor Unit, the internaltemperature of the rotorelectronics will be measured.When carrying out anytemperature critical strain gaugemeasurements, the internaloperating temperature of theRotor Unit can be monitored withthis method.

AXON J1T - digital 1-channel telemetry for temperatures

The 1-channel temperature system J1T has linearization suitable for type K thermocouples (NiCrNi). Overa measuring range from -80 ° C to +715 ° C is the measurement uncertainty is only ± 1°C!This precision is achieved by the fact that the slow temperature signal is sampled at a high rated (10kSa/s) and after 64 measurements, a mean value is calculated.As with all other J Series Systems, the J1T is very easy to install and provides very reliable and accuratemeasurement data even when used in harsh environments.

AXON J4T - digital 4-channel telemetry for temperatures

The AXON J4T telemetry system combines the smallest possible design with extremerobustness, it is designed for everyday testing. Both, the stator and the rotor unit are sealedagainst dust and water ingress (excluding solder pads). Up to four thermocouples can beconnected to the lightweight rotor unit (only 16g) which can be used for bothinductive and battery operation without additional modules.The automatic linearisation of the measured values over the range from -80°C to+715°C ensures the measurement error is less than 1°C. The signals are available as an analoguevoltage (10mV/°C) from the control unit.Cold-junction compensation and a sensor break detection are installed.The system supplies 35 measurements per second per channel. Each of the 35measured values is the mean of 64 individual measurements, which are recorded atintervals of 450 µs.This is one of the reasons why the AXON J4T provides the highest level of accuracy andreliability.

Torque-shafts

In addition to telemetry systems AXON Systems can also provide ready to usetorque transducers.

The careful design of the components is reflected in the reliability of the AXONtransducers. The strain gauges are installed with a hot glue method whichguarantees reliable results even at high ambient temperatures. Additionally,the final glass fibre bonding of the structure using only the highest qualitymaterials ensure reliable data under almost any of the harshest of conditions.Individual positioning allows measurements even under difficult physicalconditions.By using an inductive power supply to the Rotor Unit, it is possible toencapsulate the complete application in a high-strength composite fibrematerial which protects the electronics and sensors against water, dirt andmechanical damage.The complex covering method also provides protection for long-termmeasurements or abuse tests and ensures optimal performance of thetransducers.In addition to the highest quality manufacturing standards, we also strive toensure the shortest possible delivery time. A set of transducers is generallyready to ship within 2 weeks. Even shorter delivery times are possible onrequest.

We also offer an installation service for flanges and any other rotatingcomponents.As well as the application of torque transducers, also temperature transducerscan be manufactured.

All transducers are individually planned in detail as to the positioning of theinstrumentation and calibration with our customers.

All of the AXON J Series systems transmit the inductivepower in the lower kHz-range. This ensures that theenergy is distributed only to the designated area – i.e.,to the immediate vicinity of the transmission area.AXON system have been tested by Independent EMCtest laboratories and all the telemetry systems can beused safely in any environment without influencing anyother electronic equipment.By way of a reliable capacitive coupling any externalelectromagnetic influences are virtually eliminated.Measurements in hybrid electric vehicles and otherhigh-voltage devices are possible without interference.
