A premier event focused exclusively on major silicone and silicone coating technology, and technical advances in the industry

About the SeminarThe AWA Silicone Technology Seminar 2014, is a premier event focused exclusively on major silicone and silicone coating technology, and technical advances in the industry. The one day event, co-located with the annual AWA Global Release Liner Industry Conference 2014, will feature the latest technical developments, highlight technical advances, and innovations.

The AudienceThe one day seminar is targeted toward industry professionals in the silicone-release liner and pressure-sensitive segment. The audience will be from all levels of the technical community from research and development to production, including chemists, technical directors, and executives. Presentations will be at a technical level and delivered by a selection of leading industry experts.

AWA Silicone Technology Seminar 2014

Program HighlightsThis technical seminar features a line-up of presentations from companies who are prominent leaders in the development of release liners. By attending the seminar, participants will hear about ways to optimize silicone coating systems to contribute to an improved cost efficiency; be updated with common problem solving solutions in silicone coatings for paper release applications; improve their knowledge of inerting technology for UV curable release liners; learn about new optical in-line quality control capabilities for release liner production. Other key topics areas include renewable nanotechnology, developments in silicone polymer architecture and solventless thermal silicones.

Seminar Program March 19, 2014 8.00 – 9.00 Registration & Welcome Coffee

9.00 – 9.15 Seminar Opening & Introduction Theo Wilting, Business Development Director, Stellar Films Group Pty Ltd

9.15 – 9.45 Re-engineering Cost Efficient Release Base Paper Concept Mikko Rissanen, Director, Business Development, Label Papers, UPM Continuous need for improvements in cost factors of the self-adhesive label construction have set new demands for re-engineering of the main constituents of the laminate material. To keep the self-adhesive labeling as the preferred choice of a material in any product decoration and identification end use, UPM has developed a range of material efficient release and label papers to cope with the toughening requirements of coating and lamination processes as well as the variety of demanding product labeling end uses. With in depth knowledge of the interface between the silicone release coating and paper surface many of these challenges can be optimised in a smart way!

9.45 – 10.15 Cost Efficient Release Coating in a Complex Liner Market Dr. Hans Lautenschlager, Senior Technical Manager Release Coating, Wacker Chemie AG Commercial coaters face a diversity of requirements in a complex release liner market. Strategies to cost efficiency differ for different segments. Silicones are an integral part in release liners. Optimized silicone systems can contribute to improve cost efficiency. This presentation will help to choose the optimum cost saving strategy and minimize the risk of change.

10.15 – 10.45 Silicone Release Liners - Problem Solving In Paper Release Applications Dr. Mark Johns, Technical Service Scientist - Release Coatings, Bluestar Silicones (UK) Ltd. The problems that are commonly associated with end use of silicone coatings for release applications against pressure sensitive adhesives (PSA’s) are relatively few in number, but each has many contributing factors, and many problems are interlinked. This presentation will relate problems to possible causes, what should be analyzed and how to resolve certain problems.

10.45 – 11.30 Coffee & Networking Break

Seminar Program (cont.) March 19, 2014 11.30 – 12.00 Inerted Technology for UV-Curable Release Liners Peter Beier, Team Leader Sales, Dr. Hönle AG Thanks to the benefits in UV curing, like low energy consumption and fast process speeds, this technology sees a steady grow in the converting industry. Release Silicones are mostly crosslinked under an inerted atmosphere, which means the UV chamber is floated with nitrogen to avoid the oxygen inhibition during UV curing. This paper will explain the technical background of the inertisation and introduce recent developments and solutions, like control and regulation of the remaining oxygen level.

12.00 – 12.30 New Capabilities in Optical In-line Quality and Process Control in the Production of Release Liners Hans Oerley, Senior Manager Business Development, Dr. Schenk GmbH Industriemesstechnik GmbH Modern optical inspection systems (AOI) are a powerful remedy to overcome pressure-sensitive label application problems such as deformation, insufficient thickness or incomplete coatings. These AOI’s are based on digital line cameras and feature specially designed multi-channel LED line illuminations. The presentation will focus on new methods of detection and provide an evaluation of the process deviations and the possibilities of monitoring the release liner parameters (such as the homogeneity of the corona treatment or the silicone layer) over the complete width of the film.

12.30 – 13.00 Using Renewable Nanotechnology (and other Novel Approaches) to Improve Release Base Paper Performance Robert Hamilton, President, Stirling Consulting, Inc In pilot trial work at the University of Maine Process Development Center, the use of novel nano fibrillated cellulose technology has demonstrated the ability to improve holdout, formation and surface uniformity of base papers. At the same time, machine operation and efficiency improvements have been noted, related to reduction in energy savings resulting from reduced refining requirements.

13.00 – 14.00 Lunch

14.00 – 14.30 Silicone Developments to Improve Release Profiles for High-speed Release Applications Dr. Stephen Cray, Technology Leader - Europe, Dow Corning Corporation The technology of label construction and application is constantly evolving. Accelerating efficiency demands in the release liner market in the past few years has shown the need for systems, which are more cost effective or can help improve process efficiency gains downstream. As base materials and face materials become ever thinner and the converting and labeling process ever faster, the challenge is one of how to maintain a suitable release performance from the silicone release liner. This paper will explain the impact of silicone technology on the high speed release performance of laminates and how the latest developments in silicones are aiming to overcome these challenges.

14.30 – 15.00 Quality of Release Coatings with 5 Roller Coaters Hardi Döhler, Innovation Management RC Silicones, Evonik Industries AG UV curing RC Silicones are popular in many high demanding applications. Good silicone coverage is most important for the best release performance. Solventless 100% Silicones often are applied by means of 5 roller coaters. Cost savings drive siliconizers to lower coat weights while performance requirements require stable and save full silicone coverage of substrates. Coater head settings are important to enable lowest coat weight and best coverage. 5 roller coaters have a high number of variables to play with. This paper aims to build up a basic understanding of most of the coater head settings to enable to predict consequences both on coat weight and on silicone coverage.

15.00 – 15.45 Coffee & Networking Break

15.45 – 16.15 Release Coating Silicone Technology - Use the Full Spectrum! Jérôme Salvert, Technical Service Engineer - Release Coatings Market, Bluestar Silicones The Release Liner Industry is constantly evolving, making the production and converting processes faster and more cost-effective with growing legislative and environmental constraints. Release Liners associated withthe range of silicone technologies (solvent, solventlessm emulsion and radiation) are essential leverages to respond to those challenges from the upstream to the downstream of the value chain. This presentation will show how the wide possibilities of the different silicone technologies and how the latest advances can better meet the requirements of the release liner market.
