Volunteer Corner is a new initiative that will appear in every CHAT, to help us get to know our fellow volunteers a little bet-ter!

We will be doing short interviews with BCCH and Sunny Hill volunteers. You can choose to answer anonymously or become CHAT-famous and include your name and/or picture!

Written by Yuki Nakahara, BCCH Volunteer and Auxiliary

Yuki : Why did you choose to volunteer at BC Children’s Hospital?

Volunteer 1: “It’s a great place to bring my child. It was my first experience coming in, and everyone was really helpful and I wanted to give back.”

Volunteer 2: “Children’s is a warmer and more inviting hospital. I used to volunteer somewhere else, but I wasn’t a big fan and when my nephew was here (at BCCH), I saw the place and liked the environment.”

Volunteer 3: “It has a warm vibe, and it’s close to where I live!”

Yuki: Do you have any upcoming plans for the summer??

Volunteer 1: “Going to Europe with the family!”

Volunteer 2: “Pemberton! Tickets are out on Thursday.”

Volunteer 3: “I’m getting married in July!”

Interview with a Fun Cart Volunteerwritten by Daria Hutchinson, JAC Representative and member of Auxiliary to BCCH

Q: What is the Fun Cart Program?

The Fun Cart is exactly what it sounds like - a cart filled with fun - toys, games, stickers, and fun activities. On weekdays, several volunteers (usually in groups of 3) will take the cart around to various clinic and out-patient waiting rooms around the hospital and sometimes into Surgical Day Care or the Dialysis Unit. We play with patients and their siblings, and try our best to make waiting for appointments as fun as possible!

Q: What is your favourite part of being a Fun Cart Volunteer?

You get to see so many children throughout your shift, as well as many areas of the hospital. It is always great to see a kid’s face light up when you bring the cart into a waiting room.

Q: What is the most challenging aspect of this role?

Sometimes it can be pretty quiet if there are not a lot of children around or who want to play, but more often than not we have plenty to do!

Q: How is the Fun Cart different from other volunteer programs at the hospital?

Your shifts are normally pretty varied - one shift you might spend your entire time playing in ophthalmology, other days you will be walking all over the hospital to different clinics.

Q: Is there anything else you would like other volunteers to know about the Fun Cart Program?

It is a great way to learn more about the Hospital, meet BCCH staff and spend quality time with both patients and families. If you are thinking of trying a different volunteer role, I would definately recommend checking out the Fun Cart Program!

What is BCCH JAC? JAC stands for Junior Auxiliary Committee. The role of this committee is to represent hospital youth volunteers as an adjunct to the Auxiliary to BC Children’s Hospital Board. This is done by: - Supporting youth volunteers (ages 16-30) by providing them with additional growth and leadership opportunities- Providing a flexible committment- Planning and delivering events that promote volunteer interaction and education, fundraising, or other events- Offering committee and leadership experience and volunteer hours- Providing the opportunity to meet and work with other BC Children’s and Sunny Hill Volunteers What is Communications? The Communications Committee consists of two parts: CHAT/E-news and Social Media CHAT/E-news: Four CHAT newsletters get released per year during the fall to spring months. E-news are released during the months between CHAT releases or as needed. Both feature information about important events and updates, and as a means to connect BC Children’s and Sunny Hill volunteers.Communications Committee members help form the CHAT Newsletters by writing articles, performing interviews, and contributing ideas. Commitment is variable and depends on the articles you sign up for.
