2. A rod of mass M and length L is hinged at point O. a small bullet of mass m hits the rod at the

lowest point with a velocity v in a horizontal direction and gets embedded in the rod after the

impact. Find the angular velocity of the system after the impact.

3. Three particles each of mass m are situated at the vertices of an equilateral triangle ABC of side L as shown in the figure. Find the moment of inertia of the system about the axis AX passing through A and perpendicular to AB.

4. From a circular disc of mass 9M and radius R, a small disc of radius R/3 is

removed from the disc. Find the moment of inertia of the remaining portion of the

disc about an axis perpendicular to the plane of the disc and passing through the

point O.

5. One quarter sector is cut from a uniform circular disc of radius R. this sector has a

mass M. It is made to rotate about a line perpendicular to its plane and passing

through the centre of the original disc. What is the moment of inertia of the sector?

6. A uniform circular disc of mass m is set rolling on a smooth horizontal surface with a uniform linear

velocity v. Find the total kinetic energy of the disc.

7. A rod of length L is placed along the x axis between x=o and x=L. the linear density of the rod

varies with the distance x from the origin as =a+bx, where a and b are constants. Find the

position of centre of mass of the rod.

8. The moment of inertia of a rod of length l and mass m about an axis passing through the centre

and perpendicular to its length is ml2/12. What is the moment of inertia of the rod about an axis

passing through an end?

9. Define potential energy. Show that the potential energy of a spring of spring constant k

compressed by an amount x is 212kx .

10. State the principle of conservation of mechanical energy and show that the principle is valid for a body falling freely.

11. Show that in head on collision of two balls of equal masses moving along a straight line, the balls simply exchange their velocities.

12. Discuss the elastic collision between two bodies in one dimension and obtain the expression for their final velocities after collision.

13. What is an inelastic collision? A moving body collides with a stationary body of different mass. After perfectly inelastic collision, both the bodies stick together and move with a common velocity. Derive an expression for the common velocity and also find the expression for the loss in kinetic energy.

14. If the horizontal range of a projectile is ‘a’ and the maximum height attained is ‘b’, then prove

velocity of projection is 122
