Over the summer many Yettoners have sadly watched the demolition of the old school while remembering their own school days. Wanted - Bell ringersDid you know that the everyday expression “ringing the changes” comes from the regular rhythm and constantly changing order in which church bells are rung? Church bells have long been part of Kirkheaton life. The dedicated team of enthusiasts are looking for some local people to join them and learn to ring.Bell-ringing attracts people of different ages, backgrounds and temperaments (and you don’t need to be a church member). The youngest is just eight, the oldest ….. well past retirement age! Everybody contributes on an equal level. It doesn’t require special strength, equipment or expense, but is a great training in co-ordination, rhythm, concentration and teamwork. It is about co-operation, not competition. It can be endlessly stimulating and satisfying, and a refreshing recreation for people with busy lifestyles.Ringing times are twice on Sundays, Tuesday evenings for practice, and weddings and other occasions. The present eight bells were installed in the 15th-century tower in 1988, replacing the original six of 1818 (now in Sandwich parish church, in Kent). For over 50 years, until 2012, the team was under the leadership of lifelong “Yettoner” Richard Senior and Kirkheaton became well known for high standards of ringing. Since his death the small local team, helped by others from further afield, strive to maintain these. Why not come down for a practice night and see what it’s like? No commitment - but you might just get hooked.Contact the church office (531449) to learn more.

A short circular walk [1.5 miles] with one short climb rewarded by a magnificent panoramic 360o views towards Dewsbury, Mirfield, Huddersfield and Emley mast.Start at the Community Centre. With your back to the building turn left onto New Road. Cross and turn right for approx. 15m to Stoney Bank Lane. Turn down here and continue across the road and behind the houses. Continue past the football field and go through a gap into scrubland. At a junction

with another path running left to right just after a wall, turn right and follow it to the main road [New Road].Cross and continue on the path behind the houses (sp). [If this path is overgrown retrace your steps to the road and turn left into Meadow Park.]At the next road turn left and cross Grange Moor Road to a rough track. Go through the gateway [Hirstle’s Fabrications] and at the second gateway (sp)

take the footpath diagonally up the hill to the ridge. This takes you to the trig point where there is a magnificent 360 degree view of the surrounding countryside.[A trig point or triangulation station was used by mapmakers to work out the shape of the country in the 1930’s.] Leave the trig point and go down to the left to a stile in the corner. Follow the path through the next fields and down to the road. Cross and take the footpath (sp) about 15m to the right between the houses. At the next road turn right for about 10m and continue down between the houses. At the next road turn right and continue to the junction with Moorside Road. Turn left and walk down the road to its junction with Fields Rise. Turn right here to reach your starting point. This walk is a taster for a book of walks around Kirkheaton to be published in the near future.(sp) means signpost

Housing Development in Kirkheaton

4

There are several plots of land which Hartley Property Trust Ltd wish to develop in the village and they submitted outline planning (2014/60/91831W) in June for 60 properties to be built off Cockley Lane on a greenfield site [decision expected in November] and a further 42 (2014/60/92535/W) in August on the Broadhead & Graves Mill Site plus seven accessed from Orchard Road. As the Cockley Hill site has the only remaining view of old Kirkheaton, neighbours concerned over the impact on the landscape and infrastructure approached Yetton Together for support. As respondents to the Community Plan felt strongly about the type and number of houses the village needed and were concerned over future developments, a meeting with representatives of Kirklees Planning, Councillors, residents and Yetton Together was held in July. This highlighted concerns re the planning application including flooding and surface water drainage, only one vehicular entrance to the

site, and its close proximity to the quarry landfill which has one of the largest Great Crested Newt population in Western Europe. We are currently waiting it going to Committee in order to make further representation. It has been made very clear that the council’s hands are tied regarding outline planning permission. Therefore it is in the community’s interest to seek ways to influence the detailed developments of these and future sites in the area eg type of housing, building materials use and open spaces. There will be a public meeting on Thursday 6th November 7pm at the Community Centre with the view of forming a group to explore developing a formal Neighbourhood Plan. In this way Kirkheaton would have a legally recognised voice in any future plans for the area. We are fortunate to have an expert in the village who will be able to support and guide the group in this venture. Further updates will be posted at yettontogether.org where you can also comment on both proposed developments.

Nearly 100 children took part in this year’s Summer Reading Challenge based in the library. The theme was ‘Amazing Mazes’ and young readers enjoyed craft activities, puzzles and games alongside the challenge of reading at least six books during the summer holidays. A certificate and ‘gold’ medal was presented to all readers who completed the challenge.Other activities planned for the library include the setting up of monthly craft sessions for 7 - 11 year olds and an adult book group. So watch out for the publicity!Profits from Thursday & Friday’s refreshments sessions are supporting future financing of the library.

Over the last few months walkers will have noticed changes on the Laneside landfill site. At Kirklees request Casey’s are in the process of restoring the present footpath over ‘the Mountain’ to its original line. Over a number of years walkers have chosen to walk at the edge of the field when walking up the hill whereas the PROW (public right of way) actually was nearer the quarry edge among ferns and hawthorn scrub. When completed the PROW will be clearly signed and will follow the correct line.Work has also started on constructing the route for the diverted stream (at present running through the small valley) On completion the stream with its reconstructed slab bridge will move nearer the quarry boundary and the diverted PROW will follow it.Plans are in place to start domestic waste tipping sometime in 2015.

Laneside Landfill Site Update

The old infant school opened in 1883. It was obviously very much needed. As early as 1869 an HMI had complained that ‘the infants [at that time located in the school building near the church] are in a very unsatisfactory state. They are crowded into a small room where it is impossible for them to move from their seats to exercise. They know very little. There is not even an alphabet card for them.’ But even then the accommodation was never really adequate. When school dinners began in the 1940′s the children had to go off the premises to eat them in the Fields Chapel Schoolroom – now Happy Days Nursery.

Did you know... The school closed in 1982 and the children were transferred to the County First School on New Road. The building was used as an annexe for the combined schools for about a year.It is now the Community Centre and library.

ENVIRONMENTThe new Amberol barrels continue to complement our hanging baskets and roundabout planting, which all add welcome colour to our village.

The plants have been tended by our hardworking Gardening Team to whom we give our grateful thanks. A photograph of one of the barrels has been entered into the Amberol Photograph Competition. There are three prizes of their products to be won.

An offer by KBPC to supply dwarf fruit trees to Community Groups as a fundraising venture had an excellent response and the income generated will be used for future village projects.

Rebuilding work on the collapsed wall on Heaton Moor Road above Epsom Way has now been completed along with the installation of a new gate.

It will cater for 8 - 12 year olds & 13 + groups. They normally run indoor sessions in school or community halls so we are looking for a suitable indoor venue. Funding normally comes from Kirklees Integrated Youth Support Service though other sources are also possible. Watch out for the publicity!

ROAD SAFETY A Speed Indicator Device has been erected on Lascelles Hall Road in response to residents’ concerns over “rat run” speeding through Lascelles Hall towards Kirkheaton.

New PCSO Sarah Conderson, who has been our Community Police Officer for almost 10 years, has been relocated to her home town of Halifax. We wish her well on her new patch. She is to be replaced by PCSO Albert Dutton.

World War One Exhibition‘Wonderful’, ‘Poignant’, ‘Very Interesting’. ‘Fantastic’, were some of visitors’ comments at Kirkheaton Family History Group’s exhibition held in August to commemorate World War One. Artefacts on display included shrapnel [surprisingly heavy], some exquisite, embroidered postcards from ‘The Front’ and a note book still encrusted with trench mud.The group meticulously researched the lives and deaths of over 130 soldiers from the area who died during or just after the war, including their war records and place of burial. (This research is now accessible via the Yetton Together website)Several relatives of those being remembered visited the exhibition, one of whom was the great nephew of William Thomas Houghland who died in 1917 aged 21 during the

Arras offensive. Until the KFHG got in touch via Facebook, he was not aware that he even had a great uncle. £95.22 was collected for the British Legion. What next? Research will continue into WW1 soldiers and also preparation for the 70th Anniversary of the end of World War Two in Europe on 8 May 2015.If you have a Kirkheaton Parish relative who died in WW2 or old copies of the Church Magazine, please get in touch - [email protected] / 01484 304 421.Remembrance Sunday this year (10.30 am, Sunday, 9th November, Parish Church) will have a WW1 focus.

Community Centre NewsThe building is owned by the parish church and Kirklees Council will not be extending their lease beyond August 2015. Yetton Together have expressed their interest in taking it on and supporting the library space as well as continuing provision for the playgroup. This is an exciting prospect but a huge financial commitment. Many of you will have noticed that the community centre is beginning to buzz with groups running during library opening times. In the summer, parts of the building were redecorated which is encouraging more groups to use it. In September Yetton Together launched their monthly talk and social group ‘Yetton Hub’ which meets on the second Tuesday of the month. Monthly talks, theatre trips and outings are planned. All welcome - no commitment to join a club. Just turn up to what interests you.Other groups who are planning to use the centre include yoga and ‘Tots’ dancing classes, photography and a monthly crafts session. Watch out for the publicity or call in during library opening times and find out what’s on.Thank you to volunteers and customers who are helping to raise funds through supporting Yetty’s Coffee Shop (open first Friday pm & Sat am of the month) along with the refreshments served in the library every Thursday & Friday afternoons. This is a valuable source of income to help make the centre sustainable. Also a big thank you for other donations received especially to the Knit and Natter group who raised £125 from the raffle of their throws at the gala.

Darren and Cheryl are working hard to get their new sandwich shop established in Kirkheaton. The name ‘Moxy’s’ was a nickname Darren acquired from his schooldays from his surname ‘Moxon’.With locally sourced ingredients, Darren offers speciality sandwiches, salads and a ‘C.Dot’ which is their biggest sandwich made in a Stottie or Flatcake – full to the brim with egg, bacon, sausage, black pudding, mushrooms, beans and tomatoes - order in advance by phone or sit and wait with a complimentary cup of coffee/tea (only available with the C.Dot).

Darren’s future plans include utilising his baking prowess – skills learned from his nan and his mum. His specialities are fudge cake, cheesecake and tiramisu. Outside catering may be on the cards as Cheryl has previous experience from her days within the Licensing Trade.Darren says that the shop is getting quite popular with the young people as a drop-in where they can sit and talk with a drink whilst logging-in with their laptops via the accessible WIFI.The best of luck in your new business from the Yetton News Team.
