Using the AutoCAD 2011 Tutorials Welcome to the AutoCAD 2011 Tutorials. You don't have to work through the lessons in the order shown in the overview; however, you should work through lesson 1 first, because it explains how to set up the drawing environment. After lesson 1, gain experience with the other fundamental exercises before moving on to the intermediate exercises. Work through the advanced exercises only when you feel comfortable with the basic commands and functions of AutoCAD. Entering Commands Before entering an AutoCAD 2011 command, click the AutoCAD 2011 title bar to make AutoCAD 2011 active. To cancel any AutoCAD 2011 command, press ESC. After responding to an AutoCAD 2011 prompt, always press ENTER. If you make a mistake in your drawing and want to go back and try again, use the UNDO command - use this button Note You need to switch off the DYN input possibility to use the description in the tutorials.

Tips When you start AutoCAD 2011 you will have the opportunities to choose different Workspaces – this booklet is written on this workspace: Now you're ready to start the tutorial. Imperial or Metric I have made this book for both Imperial and Metric use. When you meet numbers that you have to type there will be both inches and millimeters and I have chosen to show it in this way: 12,9 / 300,225 The first pair of numbers is inches and after the slash the numbers are in millimeters.

Tutorial 1 - Drawing a Flange In this first lesson, you will draw a flange. The flange drawing consists of circles, lines, and trimmed areas. You will practice some frequently used AutoCAD 2011 commands: CIRCLE, OFFSET, LINE, MIRROR, and TRIM. Also you will learn some basic AutoCAD 2011 drawing and editing techniques, such as using Object Snap mode. The lesson consists of six short procedures:

• Creating a new drawing file • Setting up the drawing environment • Drawing two bushings • Drawing a line to connect the bottoms of the bushings using Object Snap mode • Mirroring the line to connect the tops of the bushings • Trimming the unwanted lines

To create the drawing file The file lesson01 is in the AutoCAD 2011 Template directory. For this exercise, you will use the template lesson01.dwt upon which to create your drawing. When you are ready to open the template file for this exercise, follow these steps:

1. From the Quick Properties choose New.

2. In the Select a Template list box, select the file lesson10.dwt and choose OPEN. AutoCAD 2011 opens a new drawing file using the lesson01.dwt/lesson01-metric.dwt template settings. The drawing area should be empty.

To set up the drawing environment A template drawing contains settings for one or more of the following:

• Drawing units (decimal, engineering, and so on) • Limits (the boundaries of the drawing) • Drawing aids (Snap, Grid, Ortho) • Layers • Linetypes • Screen size

In the other Tutorial exercises, the template drawing already has the settings you need.

In this first exercise, however, you will learn how to set units, limits, and drawing aids yourself.

1. Key in the command Units. 2. In the Units dialog box, select 0.00 under Precision and then choose OK.

AutoCAD 2011 uses decimal units by default, which is the correct setting for this exercise. What you enter on the command line in response to a prompt is shown in boldface: Example: Upper right corner <12.0000,9.0000>: 16,12

3. Key in the command Limits. .. Reset Model space limits: Specify lower left corner or [ON/OFF] <0.0000,0.0000>: Press ENTER to accept the default Specify upper right corner <12.0000,9.0000>: 16,12 (imperial) 420,297 (metric)

Note: You must press ENTER after you respond to an AutoCAD 2011 prompt. You've set the limits of your drawing to 16x12 units, slightly larger than the mechanical part you want to draw.

About the ZOOM Command ZOOM increases or decreases the apparent size of objects. It provides many options for controlling the display of the drawing. Normally you will use your mouse to zoom the drawing: Twist the mouse wheel to zoom in and out on the drawing –DoubleClick the wheel to zoom all drawing elements into the screen.

To draw two bushings Now that you've set up the drawing environment, you can begin drawing. First draw a circle for the outside of the left bushing. About the CIRCLE Command You can draw a circle in several different ways with the CIRCLE command. In this procedure, you use the center and radius method: you specify the center point, and then specify a radius. About Absolute Coordinates In a two-dimensional (2D) coordinate system, you specify points by entering two values that determine the location of a point relative to the X (horizontal) and Y (vertical) axes. The two values are separated by a comma, for example, 0,0 2,3 2.25,6.05

1. From the ribbon, choose Circle. _circle Specify center point for circle or [3P/2P/Ttr (tan tan radius)]: 3,4 / 75,100 Specify radius of circle or [Diameter]: 2 / 50 Now you will draw another circle for the outside of the right bushing.

2. From the ribbon, choose Circle. AutoCAD 2011 prompts you again to specify the center point using the X and Y axes. _circle Specify center point for circle or [3P/2P/Ttr (tan tan radius)]: 7.5,4 / 187.5,100 Specify radius of circle or [Diameter]: 1.2 / 30 Your drawing should look like this (grid not shown).
