IMPLEMENTATION
Learning Context This is a modified version of lesson 16 in Unit 4 of Houghton MifflinHarcourt's Journeys program. It is part of an integrated two-weekunit on exploration. Students have worked previously with webmaps and main ideas and details. The students will continue towork with this comprehension strategy and text to deepenunderstanding throughout the week. Students will fill out their ownweb maps in the follow-up lessons.
Procedure Anticipatory Set:
1. The teacher will ask students if they've ever looked up at thenight sky. What did they see? When students mention the moon,the teacher will ask if the moon always looks the same (no,sometimes it's small and thin, sometimes it's big). The teacher willexplain that we will be reading a text about the moon and findingthe main idea and details. The teacher will explain that goodreaders look for the main idea and details of a text in order tounderstand it better.
Teach/Model:
2. Students and teacher will read and discuss Student Book p. 13.
3. The teacher will display projectable 16.2 and read "The Moon"with the students. The teacher will explain that we will use a webmap to record the main idea and details.
4. The teacher will begin filling out the web map for "The Moon,"thinking aloud to explain her reasoning. The teacher will helpstudents identify supporting details and fill in the small ovals of themind map.

5. The teacher will introduce the selection Let's Go to the Moon! andtake a picture walk with the students, pointing out the headings. The teacher will model setting a purpose for reading (to find outwhat happens on a trip to the moon).
6. The students will read the story once through following alongand be given a couple of minutes to talk with their tables aboutwhat they learned or found interesting.
7. The students will read the story through again. This time, theteacher will pause periodically to ask comprehension questions andto fill out a web map (projectable 16.3) to find the main idea anddetails of the text.
Closure:
Students will recall what they learned about the moon. They will beasked to restate the main idea and some supporting details.
Differentiated Instruction ELL students will be given sentence frames to assist in the formationof complete sentences. Vocabulary will be introduced and discussedduring the picture walk.
