1...The TENTERFIELD REUNION was held on 11th and 12th April 1996 and went off pretty well as

programmed in the Invitations. The name tags weren't the best but most of them stuck on and the ribbons

did help people from the same "Line" to identify each other. Amber Maloney did a mighty job with the

registrations as did her father Neville with the MC's job which he failed to flog off to anyone else. The

caterers at the Golf Club did their job well also and no-one had to wait too long for their meal. The 2

along.

After the dinner and speeches were over photographs of the various generations were taken. The

first call was for Generation "E" to assemble in front of the big board but this was quickly changed when a

rather loud female voice was heard to say "Please can we have Generation "G" first, they're starting to go

to sleep !!" which was a very sensible suggestion..

Sunday saw the company assemble at the Sunnyside Hall after a visit to the Tenterfield Cemetery

to see some of the Pioneer's graves there. Sunnyside was an ideal venue for the informal barbeque and

supplied a very typically Australian setting. Not everybody managed to get to Sunnyside but those that did

were glad they were there. Thanks must go to Nancy Fox who organised it and made sure all went well.

122 4 F858A PAUL ZUIDEMA Calamvale Q. 2..The PORT MACQUARIE Reunion was held on the 11th and 12th May 1996 at the Westport Bowling

Club and was described by one descendant who attended as a "uniquely successful week-end". The

weather was good and again the club did their job well. The name tags were an improvement on

Tenterfield and there were

more speakers as there were more "Lines". Reeve Waugh did the MC's job very well and this time we had

an impressive male piper from the local pipe band to mark the end of the pre-dinner drinks and the

commencement of the dinner. Those who addressed the gathering were as follows..

The Welcome Address was given by Reeve then Grace was said (in Latin!) by Ian Waugh.

After the dinner the speakers were...

John Rees from Kiama who spoke on the "Harvey" Waugh line with references to his late mother

Lu Rees O.A.M. M.B.E. and her work, particularly her promotional work in literature for children.

Kath Harvey of Neutral Bay gave us all a glimpse of what early life in the Guy Fawkes (Ebor) area

was like she also being a descendant of Harvey.Kath had all of her four grown up children at the

gathering.

Nona Holsbaum of Castle Hill, a descendant of Will Waugh, spoke on her memories of some of

the old pioneers including Manie and Laura who she knew personally.

Neville Maloney gave the assemblage an outline of what to expect in his forthcoming book on the

Waughs.

Allan Waugh of Woy Woy then spoke on his experiences as a descendant of the "Will Waugh"

line and life in the Ebor district and timber industry.

Ian Waugh spoke on behalf of the "Jack Waugh" line which took the blue ribbon for having the

most descendants at the reunion.

Caroline Gaden of Armidale who is not a direct descendant but is married to one (Bob Gaden)

(and is the mother of three DDs) then told us about her forthcoming book on the Schraders. Two of the

Waugh "Heads of Lines",Reeve Waugh and Jack Waugh married Schrader girls at Walcha. This book will

be of special interest to their descendants.

Lee Behrens of Maryborough represented the "Eva Waugh/Panton" line with a speech she said

Helen Anderson of Brisbane helped her prepare.

Pauline Longston of Greenacre then reminisced on the early days of her ancestor Laura

Waugh/Robinson with a witty and enjoyable discourse.

John Waugh of Goondiwindi provided the "Dr. John Waugh" line presence and it was particularly

pleasing to see John and his family there. In the early days the two pioneering brothers Dr. John and

"Aussie" Alexander never managed to get together in Australia. The two families just diverged but at Port

Macquarie

after about 150 years the descendants got together again.

Alison Shoobridge of Nubeena Tas. told us the story of how the Waughs got to Tasmania. With

her sister Kate Sainsbury and Jim Talbot from Launceston we had three descendants from Tasmania at the

Page 4: AUSTRALIAN WAUGH FAMILY SOCIETY(A.W.F.S.)cottonsoft.com.au/waugh/NEWSL_1.pdf · 1 AUSTRALIAN WAUGH FAMILY SOCIETY.....(A.W.F.S.) Newsletter No 1...August 1996.. CONTENTS 1...Report

reunion.

Lyn Griffiths who like Caroline is married to a D.D.(Kit Smith),then gave us an insight of her

work in research into human genes and DNA. There was a price to be paid of course for this insight, in

the form of blood samples which she took next morning. She said she could hardly believe her luck when

Kit said they were going to this gathering of the Waugh descendants and the people there would be part of

a family of over 2700 people all related. Here's hoping her efforts will be met with success.(She got over

40 blood samples.)

Ron Main was the final speaker (sighs of relief all round!) He got a round of applause for the

Committee who made the Reunion possible then outlined the proposition that a Waugh Family Society be

formed next morning in the Conference Room.

We did have a lot of speakers but with the many "Lines" there this was unavoidable. There was a

comfort break somewhere in the middle which helped prolong the attention span which was very good.

After the dinner and speeches the various generations were put together for photos. Richard

Waugh (son of "Goondiwindi" John) who is a professional photographer took some very good wide angle

photos of the groups and more about them in the report of our new "Co-ordinator of Photographs" later in

this newsletter.

3. Report on Formation of Australian Waugh Family Society (A.W.F.S.) On the Sunday morning after

the Port Macquarie Reunion Dinner a meeting washeld in the Conference Room of the Westport Bowling

Club and the decision toform the above Society was taken by those present. About 45 families paid their

$10 joining/membership fee after filling in their application forms. A copy of this form accompanies this

Newsletter to enable existing members of A.W.F.S. to recruit new members, or those people at the

Reunion who didn't manage to get to the Sunday morning meeting, a chance to join.

4. Financial Report..

A detailed financial report will not be given here. Suffice to say that after all expenses were met for the

Tenterfield and Port Macquarie reunions a modest overall profit of about $500 resulted. This will assist in

the

preparation and mailing out of this and the next Newsletter. With the $10 membership fees collected so

far for A.W.F.S.we have a bit over $1200 in the two accounts. Any surplus left over after the Newsletters

are provided for will go into the book on the Waughs being put to-gether by Neville. This may allow

some more colour photos in the publication.

5. Report on Co-rdination of Photographs..

Some very good Generation Photos were taken at Port Macquarie reunion by Richard Waugh, and Chris

Vaughan has taken on the task of getting the IDs of everyone in these photos and making copies available

to anyone who wants one The charge will be 75c per print. If you haven't yet placed your order with Chris

then contact him at Chris Vaughan 52 Cook St. FORESTVILLE NSW 2087 Ph.02 94521745

For photos of the Tenterfield Reunion contact ???????

Apart from the Reunion photos there are of course a lot of historical photos in the hands of various

members. It is difficult to make these available to everyone who wants one on a one to one basis so it is

proposed that there be at least 2 "Photo Co-Ordinaters ", one for the "Aussie William" branch and one for

the "Aussie Alexander" branch. These people will keep a "Register of Waugh Family Historical Photos"

,in the form of negatives which can be copied fairly cheaply. It costs about $5.00 to get a negative made of

an old print but once that is done copies can be made for 75c or so. If AWFS members have historical

photos they believe will be of interest to other members, please let me know the details and I will get out a

catalog of photos available which will go out with the next Newsletter. Orders will then be able to be

placed with the

Branch Photo Co-Ordinater who can arrange for negatives to be taken and prints sent off. Prices will be

adjusted so it is self-funding.

Thank you for your interest ,

Ron Main

Editor (For the time being!..until someone else takes it on)

6. Questionaire re Future Functions

Firstly, contributions "To The Editor" would be appreciated for the next Newsletter. Material should be

of historical interest to AWFS members and if at all lengthy preferably on disc in Word Perfect, Word or

ASCII format.(My own PC will only accept 5 1/4"discs but Neville can handle either 3 1/2" or 5 1/4" .

Also a listing of photos which could be made available would be appreciated and will be collated and sent

out with the next Newsletter.

Secondly, to enable the committee to organise future functions would you please provide feedback by

filling in the following Questionaire and returning same to

Ron Main at R.M.B.467 KOOTINGAL 2352 Ph.(067) 609315 ("Aussie Alexander" or

Neville Maloney 15 Colin St. BANGALOW NSW 2479 Ph.(066)872250 ("Aussie William)
