SATURDAY 12TH OCTOBER – EXCURSION

Leave the corner of Gillies & Gregory Streets at 10am and head down the Midland Hwy to Corio.

There we will visit Pam & Matt Baar’s Garden. I have never visited this garden but am told it is

well worth the trip.

We will then continue toward Lara and visit the Kevin Hoffman Walk – A Native Garden Trail that

stretches along Hovells Creek. This is a gentle walking track that showcases a unique collection of

Native Plants, Sculptures, and Wildlife. Originally inspired by Kevin Hoffman and his family and

supporters, they have shaped this significant indigenous path since 1970 with its lush groundcovers,

flowering Native trees & shrubs.

After we have had Lunch somewhere, (remember to bring a Cup, Plate, Knife and Fork), we

will continue on to the Brisbane Ranges and find out what is flowering there, at this time of year it

should be quite spectacular.

After we have seen all we want to see, we will head home.

Payment can be made through the Bank, or Cash on October Meeting night.

councils in townships and urban areas supporting each other to involve local residents, schools and

ideas and resources, link individuals who can help each other, and to provide workshops on how to

implement wildlife gardening programs and how to assess their impact. Gardens for Wildlife

Community Interaction: The Hasties

For a number of years, we have been

conducting workshops about Australian Native

Plants for the Wendouree and Ballarat North

Neighbourhood Houses. These workshops have

usually involved propagation, by seeds or

cuttings, but also consider selection of plants

for home gardens. Follow-up visits to our

garden have occurred.

The most recent events have been a Question

and Answer session over Morning Tea at

Ballarat North Neighbourhood House and John

delivered a session on choosing plants at the

newly formed Ballarat East House.

A new interaction is with Vision Australia.

Vision Australia has regular group activities for

the Visually Impaired at the Howitt Street

facility. The activities include woodwork, other

craft work, art, etc. in the well-equipped rooms.

The session we conducted was a sensory

activity involving Mint Bushes (Prostanthera),

both edible and just aromatic and ‘tastable’

leaves; lemon, aniseed and cinnamon myrtle.

Two more visits are planned on different days

to cater for other groups.

Editor’s Note: The Hasties are highly

commended for these activities.
