Chairman’s Report Last year proved to be a

very eventful year, not just for Support Dogs as a charity but for the country as a whole. We were in illustrious company with our celebrations; our twentieth anniversary year coincided with the Queens Diamond Jubilee and a very successful Olympics & Paralympics on our home turf. The celebrations continued with our first Charity Ball held in conjunction with Hilton in the Community. The evening was hosted by our President Angela Rippon OBE. We would like to extend our sincere thanks to Angela Rippon OBE for hosting the event and to the following for their sponsorship: Lesley Edmonds, Peter Hayes, Tim and Lynn Turner, Hilton Manchester, Hilton York, Red Dog Printing, Ikea, Lakeside Shopping Centre, Disney on Ice, Sheffield Wednesday, Sheffield United, Owlerton Stadium, UK Steel Enterprise,

I would also like to thank Rita Howson, Director of Operations and the Support Dogs team who all worked hard to make this a very successful event. We closed the year with our annual celebration of graduation and awards ceremony held this year at Tapton Hall, we would like to extend our thanks to David Petheridge, General Manager, for his generosity in allowing us to use this venue. Throughout 2012 Mr Peter Hayes, a Cranfield Trust Volunteer, worked with senior management and trustees to put together a business plan for the next five years. Considerable time and effort has been taken to examine every aspect of the charity. As a result a number of new positions have been created and we would like to welcome Maribeth Houlston who has taken on the role of Trust Fundraiser, Sarah Moore who has taken on the role of Marketing Coordinater, and two new Trainee Dog Trainers; Ellie Brian and Jo Ellam. Katie Burns was promoted from Senior Instructor to Training Manager and we welcome back Natasha Ellis after a year away from the organisation. A fantastic ‘Away Day’ meeting involving all staff and trustees was held last month to discuss the business plan and the proposed ways forward. The day was extremely positive and produced many great ideas and enthusiasm for the coming years. Our first two

puppies, Essi & Araminta have grown and are progressing well with their training to become fully fledged assistance dogs. In the coming months, their training will be advanced. The trainers will be looking to identify which programme they are most suited for and their training will be fine tuned prior to them being matched with a client. Our newest addition, Paddy, is progressing well and is due to start his training in the summer. I am pleased to announce that we accepted a further two puppies in March. As a client myself, currently working with my third Disability Assistance Dog, I am well aware of the life changing benefits of owning such a special dog. During my recent visit to Crufts, I had the wonderful opportunity to talk to other recipients of all programmes and hear first hand the fantastic way that their dogs have transformed not only their lives but also their families. We receive no government funding and in order for Support Dogs to continue this work, we rely on the generosity of individuals through donations, legacies, and grants from trusts and corporate sponsorship. This year Support Dogs are delighted to

announce that our Annual Gala Day at Hillsborough Park will be incorporated with Sheffield Wednesday Football Club’s event, Owls in the Park 2013. The event will take place on 30th June from 11am – 6pm and we anticipate, with the help of Sheffield Wednesday FC, to attract quite a large crowd. Last year the Owls in the Park event attracted a fantastic 12,000 fans and they anticipate it will be bigger and better this year! The day will be filled with entertainment, ranging from Support Dogs demonstrations; fun dog shows; community activities; music; sport; fairground rides and much, much more.

Support Dogs Gala Day

Collection tinsCollecting tins are one of the oldest forms of fundraising and are still very effective! Each box contains an average of £25. If we managed to get 20 tins out in one town, that’s £500 for Support Dogs! Now just think how much we can raise with 20 tins in 20 towns......!Why don’t you get the ball rolling in your area, just take 5 collecting tins and put one in your local news-agent, bakery, fish and chip shop, pub or anywhere you think the tin would be able to gather loose change. Such a small task for you would have huge benefits for us!

You will also get the chance to meet all the players!There will be plenty of food and drink stands and you will have the opportunity to take part in the Support Dogs raffle and tombola which means you will not only be supporting a good cause but you could alsobag yourself a prize!!

So if you fancy a day of fun, get yourself down to Hillsborough Park on 30th June! We hope to see you there!

Alice, Alex and Lucie

This is the story of how Support Dogs have helped us find a positive way to help Alex live with his autism, enabling him to be safer and calmer, bringing out his true potential.I live in Chorley, Lancashire with my husband, Dave, and my two boys, Thomas, 7, and Alex, 6. Both of our boys have a diagnosis of Autism Spectrum Disorder, and our lives have seemed like a roller coaster ride trying to learn to cope with the challenges. But recently things have taken a very positive turn as we have a wonderful new addition to our family! In April of 2012, we recieved the call from Support Dogs that we had been waiting for informing us that our application had been successful and we would shortly be recieving our Support Dog. In May, Autism Assistance Dog, Lucie, came to live with us and within five minutes we knew it was the right decision. Alex and Lucie’s first hour together was simply magical. By the end of the first week our whole family life began to change and with it Alex’s world started to open up. I had to choke back the tears as I walked him into the supermarket - such a simple everyday activity for most but such a huge step for Alex. With Lucie by his side,

he calmly looked around and walked down the aisles. We had a summer of ‘firsts’ taking our boys to places we had not been able to manage before. Our family regularly go out on walks now and Lucie is a great motivating factor. At home, if anyone is having any fun or giggles Lucie comes bounding in to make sure she is not missing out. When someone is sad, she is there to stroke, and offers comfort. She even sleeps next to Alex, watching out for him and helps him develop his night time independence. And while Lucie is here for Alex she is also a part of our family and has stolen a bit of all our hearts. Dave loves walking her and I enjoy having a companion all day long who never tires of cuddles. We were very clear with Thomas at the start that Lucie was his brother’s assistance dog but he too has developed a beautiful caring bond with

her and chats away to her in a way we never heard before. For Alex, the future is still unknown. This is not like the movies, there is no Disney overnight success story with autism. As with everything else it takes time and hard work. On reflection, all the time we have invested just to see Alex giggle, be calmer and start to live a life like other boys, has been worth every moment.She is more than a dog to us, she is the key to a better life.

Support Dogs Annual Awards Ceremony

In 2012 we were privileged to hold our annual awards ceremony at Tapton Hall, it was a well

attended event and it was wonderful to spend time with clients, staff and valued supporters. Special thanks to David Petheridge, General Manager of Tapton Hall for allowing us to use this fantastic venue. The first award of the day went to our Director of Operations; Rita Howson who received a tribute for her 20 years of service with Support Dogs.

Crufts 2013 We were absolutely delighted by the turnout at Crufts this year and we were exceptionally busy at our stand. We raised much more money and awareness than in previous years. Sally Burton and Robbie Sally Burton shares her

family home in Worksop with her husband, Philip. Sally contacted Support Dogs many years ago as she was interested in the Seizure Alert programme. Sally said, that she gets at least four seizures during the day, sometimes more and she can get as many as six or seven at night. Sally’s application for a Seizure Alert Dog was successful and she was matched with Star. Sally enoyed a partnership with Star, for 11 years until Star retired. Shortly after Star’s retirement she sadly passed away. Sally said she never thought that she would feel

When I am out it is reassuring to know that Robbie will give me 50 minutes warning prior to an oncoming seizure, plenty of time to get somewhere safe. But as most people linked with Support Dogs know, these dogs do more than break down the barriers erected by illness or a deteriorating condition.”

socialization programme and begin to learn basic obedience commands. At approximately 14 months of age, the puppies will be ready to attend our training centre on a daily basis. Here, they will learn basic obedience and simple task work. After this period, the young dog will be directed to the programme for which they show the most potential and they will begin their advanced training. Once they have reached the standard that is required of an assistance dog, they will be partnered with a suitable applicant, specifically trained to meet their needs and will eventually become a fully qualified assistance dog.

Trisha & Billy’s Story

“He’s my little superstar our Bill.” These are the first words you will hear from Trish Ledger if you ask her about her Disability Assistance Dog, Billy. Becoming an assistance dog was quite a remarkable turnaround for Billy as when he started his initial training at Support Dogs, he did nothing but get himself into mischief. Lost your shoe? Billy had hidden it. Missing your dinner? Billy had eaten it. Coffee cup empty? Billy had drunk it. After his intensive training with Support Dogs, he became a recognised

assistance dog and has completely transformed Trish’s life. Trish said, “He’s my right hand man and he has improved my life so much.” Trish, who lives in the Chapeltown area of Sheffield with her husband, Jamie and daughter, Michaela, has an array of complex conditions including spina bifida, Scheuermann’s disease, Diabetes and Osteoarthritis.Most of the symptoms didn’t start manifesting themselves until she was in her early 20’s.

Sadly there is no cure and no remedy. According to Trish, “You’ve just got to get on with life. There is no point worrying about things you can’t change. Before Billy, I didn’t want to go out, I felt tied down and life was quite grim. But thanks to Billy the wonder dog, I can now go out to the shops, knowing he is there to pick up anything I drop. Everybody talks to me about him, and I never miss the chance to spread the word about Support Dogs and the amazing way they train dogs to transform the lives of people like me.”

November 2012 Fudge worked as a disability assistance dog for 4 years, she enjoyed her work and loved to learn new things. Unfortunately Fudge became seriously ill and passed away in November 2013. She will be sadly missed.

January 2013Chloe was a twelve year old Springer Spaniel who sadly passed away in January 2013 after a short illness. She wasDisability Assistance Dog to Mary Cox. “She leaves a massive hole in my life, she was truly inspirational and I feel both privileged and honoured to have been her friend.”

February 2013Charlie brought so many laughs and smiles into our lives, and was a true friend to our little boy, Alfred. He was such a kind, handsome dog with a huge heart and he was a true gentleman. We feel privileged that we got to spend so many happy years with him. We will never forget him.

CharlyChloe September 2012Charly was Disability Assistance Dog to Amanda Radforth. Charly loved working, but unfortunately had to retire at 5 years of age due to health reasons. Amanda said: “She was very much a one person dog and I miss her like crazy!”

Welcome back Nat!!Natasha Ellis came to

Support Dogs as a volunteer in 1997. She was soon employed as a Trainer and over the years progressed to Senior Instructor and then to Head of Training. She has had a wealth of experience over all three programmes but has specialised mainly in the Disability Assistance Dog programme. Natasha left in February 2012 to go on maternity leave to have her lovely little boy Alfred. Alfred was born on 9th April 2012 weighing an impressive 9lb 2oz. Over the past few months Natasha, her husband, Jason and new addition to the family, Alfred, have enjoyed sleepless nights, early mornings and new adventures. They had their first holiday with Alfred in July when they went to Spain. Alfred had his first splash in a swimming pool and even seemed to enjoy the plane ride. The family also enjoyed their first Christmas together. Alfred loved opening the presents and got spoilt by the whole family.

How time flies, Alfred is now one year old and Natasha has returned to the Support Dogs team on a part time basis. Natasha will be dealing with client services and is actively recruiting Volunteer Aftercare Support Workers throughout the UK. These volunteers will be responsible for clients’ aftercare in specific areas. Our goal is to fill these positions as soon as possible. Natasha said: “I have thoroughly enjoyed my time off with Alfred and miss him lots whilst I’m at work, although it is really nice to be back and I can’t wait to begin my new role.

Fidget is the newest member of the Support

Dogs family, he is a seven month old Pug cross Beagle who definitely lives up to his name. Fidget was adopted by Dog Supply Trainer, Helen, when he was four months old, as a member of his previous family had an allergic reaction to him. He is now in training to become a demonstration dog for Support Dogs and although he can get distracted at times, he is constantly learning new things and is doing really well. He did his first demonstration a few months ago for Kai Duggal and Louise Hulland from ‘Moreon Media’. They came to visit the Centre and fell in love with him instantly. He has also been out and about, visiting cafes, shopping centres and has even appeared as the guest of honour at a few fundraising events.

Introducing Fidget His best friend is an Irish Wolfhound named Titch who is a fundraising dog for Support Dogs. They love to play together, in spite of the huge size difference and even have sleep overs together. He also loves to play with Nell, a 10 year old Collie Cross who has now retired from her demonstration duties. It’s fair to say that he has definately brought back the younger side of Nell, they play for hours and although Nell is usually the top dog Fidget has different ideas! We recently featured him as the face of our volunteer appeal, which we hope will persuade people to help us, who could say no to his adorable face? His latest adventure was attending Crufts at the NEC in Birmingham, where he brought in the crowds with his adorable looks. Helen said that when they got home from their long day, Fidget was shattered and slept for the rest of the night.

Hello, my name is Pepper; I came to Support Dogs from a rescue centre not long ago and have re-cently passed my initial assessment. Things are looking up for me at the moment as my favourite trainer Natalie saw my potential, but it hasn’t always been that way. My first owner aban-doned me when I was six months old which is when I was I was found and taken to the rescue cen-tre. After that I had six different homes, I think this is because I need lots of attention and can get quite anxious at times, which is hard to deal with for some people.It’s fair to say that it takes a while for me to trust people, but once I do, we develop a fantastic bond which is something I would love to continue to work on. You see, I really want to train to become a Support Dog.
