Sometimes, it’s just time for a change. You’ll notice some different things in this issue of Cass County INFO — mostly cosmetic, but we’ve got some new things in the works here and on CassCountyOnline. Our goal is to make this the community newsletter you can’t wait to read. This month, you

helped with that by sharing your photos of the first day of school. It seems like there’s been a lot of negativity lately. We, as a community, spend a lot of time waiting on someone to see our potential, but in the meantime, we don’t hesitate to share an unflattering sentiment the moment we see it on Facebook. I don’t know that we can have it both ways. We’re at the point where our community needs to decide what it wants to be if and when it gets its second wind. On that note, stay tuned ...


Cass Area Transit and the city of Logansport are teaming up to offer a free bus route this fall. It’s a

test run, for now, but if enough people use it, organizers hope to see it continue. The City of Logansport has given prelimi-

nary approval to provide $10,000 to fund the program, which will cover the cost of up to 5,000 rides during the months of September, October and November. The route will not operate from noon to 1 p.m. Walmart will be

the last stop mid-day, at 11:39 a.m. The route will resume at Logansport Memorial Hospital at 1 p.m.

Cass County seniors will have three more opportunities for scholarships in 2016 through the Community Foundation. The new scholarships to be awarded the first time in 2016 are the “Linda Fennimore Terrel Scholarship for the Performing Arts”, the “FOR-EVER85 Scholarship Fund”, and the “Daryl Deitrich Scholarship Fund”. The Terrel Scholarship for the Performing Arts was established by Linda’s family after her passing last Novem-ber to support Cass County students who plan to major in the performance arts in college. During her lifetime Terrel was a tireless advocate for the arts and active in Logansport Civic Theater, co-founder of the Cass County Arts Alliance, and a board member and

volunteer for Footlite Musicals and Epworth Forest Choir School. The Forever85 Scholarship was established by the Lo-gansport High School Class of 1985 in memory of deceased classmates. The scholarship, funded by the class at a re-cent reunion, will be awarded to a Logansport High School senior who plans to pursue a baccalaureate degree. Applicants will be required to write a short essay and explain how they might give back to their alma mater and community in the future. The Daryl Deitrich family has established a fund in memory of Daryl and eligible students will be graduating from Caston, Lewis Cass, Logansport or Pioneer High Schools. To honor Daryl’s life and career

in agriculture and livestock, the recipient must be pursuing a degree in agriculture or an ag-related field at a two-year or four-year institution and have experience or a background in agriculture. Each scholarship has other criteria established by donor and the amount of the awards will vary. Students will receive application information about these and other scholarships held at CCCF during November. Applications are typically due at the CCCF office in late February. The 2015 recipients of the Cass County Community Foundation’s Back Home Again Scholarship are Kayla Valdez, who attends Trinity University, and Maria Banuelos Cortes, Tracy Pugh and Janet “Eileen” Beck, who attend Ivy Tech Community College in Logansport.

This $1,000 scholarship is specifically designed to assist Cass County’s non-traditional students, such as those who are entering or returning to college after raising a family or pursuing a career. All four plan to continue to live and work in Cass County.

2015 “Back Home Again” Scholarship Recipients

Individual Development Accounts through Area Five Agency allow people who meet income guidelines to open a savings account, deposit $300 each year for four years, and have that

money matched 3 to 1. That means at the end of four years, you’d have the $1,200 you saved, plus $3,600 in state and federal match money.

Local leader retiringDon Weikle, CEO of Peak Community Services, has announced his retirement from the agency as of January 29, 2016. Don has

served as Peak’s CEO since 2006. Beginning his work for people with intellectual disabilities in 1972, Don has served in a variety of direct support, supervisory, and senior management positions in Nebraska and Indiana. A Search Committee of the Board of Directors of Peak Community Services is currently in the process of seeking a replacement.

The Cass County Voter Registra-tion is taking applications for absentee mail ballots. The deadline to request absentee mail ballots is Oct. 26. Requests to vote by travel board will be accepted through noon on Monday, Nov. 2. Applications for absentee mail ballots and travel board are avail-able online through the Cass County Clerk’s Office website at co.cass.in.us or can be requested by calling 574-753-7870. The clerk’s office is open until 4 p.m. weekdays. Monday, Oct. 5 is the deadline to register to vote in the Nov. 3 general election. Eligible residents can register online at indianavoters.com or in the voter registration office at the Cass County Government Building. Absentee voting in the garage at the Cass County Government Building Monday, October 19 through Friday, October 30 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., Monday, Nov. 2 from 9 a.m. to noon and Saturday, Oct. 24 and 31 from 9 a.m. to noon. Vote Centers will be open Thursday Oct. 29 through Saturday, Oct. 31 from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. and from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Election Day, Tuesday Nov. . Vote center locations are the Logansport Mall and the 6th Street Senior Center. A vote center will be open Election Day only in Royal Center.
