A LETTER FROM THE PASTOR: “MAKING A DIFFERENCE” Tis the season to return to school. As kids begin or go back to school, parents wonder and worry. Will my child be able to keep up? Will my children get the attention they need to excel and grow? What will the teacher be like?

Teachers have a similar concern. My friend Rev. Gary MacCracken, a former Lutheran teacher in St. Louis, told me of a question that governed his years of teaching: “Am I teaching for a living, or am I teaching for a life?”

A teacher that teaches only for the paycheck has little interest in the student’s welfare. Rev. MacCraken said that the real teacher is the one who desires to learn themselves and loves to pass on that love of learning so the students can grow and excel in life. The teacher is there to make a difference in students’ lives.

What a beautiful illustration of the life and work of Jesus Christ. He lived, taught, and died for all lives—yours, mine, and the whole world. All this, he did to make a difference today and for all eternity. This difference began in the waters of Baptism, and increased from there as we grow in the faith through the Word of God and the Lord’s Supper.

In Baptism, Jesus made a difference by giving us a different life: pure and sinless, like his. Through God’s daily forgiveness and grace, you and I are kept in that different life so that we can make a difference in the lives of those around us.

Do we live this new life for ourselves or for the sake of another? Do you live the life of faith for its advantanges to your earthly life, or to give and increase the life of faith in others? If you and I live for our own advantanges, than we will never make a difference in the lives of others. Dear Trinity Family,

August is here already, and the days are getting shorter. It’s time to begin thinking about the end of vacation and the start of school!

As a child, I always really liked school (don’t get me wrong, I enjoyed the summer time too)! One thing I think about, as an adult, is that I wish I’d had an op-portunity to attend a Lutheran Christian School.

As the son of an LCMS Pastor, one would have thought that I had plenty of Christian education, and I did. But to be among other kids my age every day, growing together in the knowledge of God and the saving grace of Jesus Christ, it may have made me better equipped to defend the love of God to others.

At Trinity, we have that “once in a lifetime” opportuni-ty for our children. Our excellent school ranks high in its quality of education. It also offers special tuition rates for Trinity church members. The school strives to be visible in the community. The outstanding Chris-tian staff and principal work with the students to make certain they get to know their God, ultimately sending them out as ambassadors in the Mission Field for our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. Our students graduate from 8th grade and continue to be good examples and exemplary leaders in other public and private schools.

Acts 4:13 says. “When they found out that Peter and John had no special education or training, they were surprised to see how boldly they spoke. Then they realized that these men had been with Jesus.”

Imagine how much better equipped our children will be to face challenges and defend the love and saving grace of our God, our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.

God gives us the wind, but we control the direction of the sails.

We all desire to do the very best for our children and grandchildren. One of the best things to do is to give them the best beginning in their Christian lives. We can accomplish this at Trinity Lutheran School!

There are many opportunities for assistance in tuition and enrollment. The school is a mission of our church, and the nearly 180 students represent the people that will “enter the mission field” when they leave here.

God bless you and keep you,

Roger Schlade, President

Trinity Lutheran Church

others. From God’s own Word, which make us different by the power of the Spirit, we learn of how we can make a difference.

Encourage one another and build each other up. 1 Thess. 5:11

Each of us should please his neighbor or his good, to build him up. Romans 15:2-3

Forgive as the Lord forgave you. Col. 3:13

As I have loved you, so you must love one another. By this all men will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another. John 13:34-35

You and I have been called to make a difference in the lives of others because Christ made and daily makes a difference in you through faith.

We for whom Christ lived, died and lives again …

… live making this difference to our family of faith here at Trinity and the visitor

… live making this difference to every child that attends Trinity Lutheran School

… live making this difference to everyone we meet in Toledo and around the world.

This we do by the power of God, “Not that we are sufficient in our-selves to claim anything as coming from us, but our sufficiency is from God.” 2 Cor 3:5.

Pray for every student and every teacher that God may work great things through both for the blessing and sharing of His Kingdom that makes all things different!

In Christ’s service and yours,

Pastor Mark Love

LWML News The next Lutheran Women’s Missionary League (LWML) Mite Ingathering is Sunday, August 20. Bring gifts of coins or “quiet money” to the large Mite Box in the Welcome Centers. Make checks payable to Trinity LWML. July mites totaled $274.85.

New mission grants were selected for the 2017-2019 biennium at the June 2017 LWML Convention. Delegates adopted a historic $2.075 million mission goal. A total of 3,471 people attended the convention in Albuquerque, NM, under the theme, “Jesus Christ Above All.” LCMS President Rev. Dr. Mat-thew Harrison based his message on 1 Peter 2:1-10, affirming that we are living stones, called out of darkness to proclaim the Hope we have through our Savior Jesus Christ. The live-streamed worship service was viewed by 1,452 people from Buenos Aires, Ontario, and 44 U.S. states. Couldn’t make it? Convention sessions are archived at lwml.org/2017convention.

President Patti Ross, of Tulsa, OK, opened the convention, tell-ing us that “God would not have kept us going for 75 years if He didn’t think we were worth the trouble.” She emphasized we should all “Engage, Encourage, Equip, and Enjoy.”

Funds raised by LWML nationwide in the next two years will be used to support the following grants:

Deaconess Betty Knapp led the Bible studies on Friday and Saturday morning, using past convention themes to look back at the “Timeless Message of the Gospel” and share how Bible study should be a focus at home and conventions, and what God wants us to do in coming years as disciples.

Attendees also heard from Steve Cohen of Apple of His Eye Ministries, and a young woman who became a Christian when attending a Lutheran school in Taiwan. Keynote speaker, Ida Mall, past LWML President, reminded us to let the light of Christ shine so that people might be drawn to Jesus. Kati Lu-ther, aka Jan Struck, the convention’s Humorous Interrupter, shared excerpts of her life at the Cloister with Martin Luther and their family. President Patti unveiled the new LWML Logo. Voting delegates elected new officers to help lead the organi-zation in the next four years.

Saturday evening saw a Diamond Dazzle Celebration of fabu-lous entertainment, including mime, interviews, and soloist Rebecca Smith. There was also a procession of banners made by each of the 40 LWML Districts; a procession of flags from the 71 countries where the LWML has provided mission grants.

The 38th LWML Biennial Convention will be held June 20-23, 2019, in Mobile, Alabama.

You can find convention highlights at lwml.org/2017convention and at lwmlohio.org. Grace and Lillian also would be happy to share information or answer questions.

Anna’s Comfort Corner I hope everyone is enjoying their summer and staying safe!

Since my last letter, I’ve been busy taking my handlers to different events and places! I was asked to attend a memorial service in War-ren, Ohio, and a funeral in Midland, Michigan. I was so honored to be invited to bring peace, comfort, and strength to those attending. I was a stress reliever as many sat down to cuddle, play with my ears, or just sit quietly. I made friends and made people smile, even if it was for just a little while.

July 9th was my “Gotcha Day,” when my team went to Chicago 2 years ago for a long training weekend. There, we met each other and found out that I had been specially selected to be Trinity’s Com-fort Dog. I was dressed for the occasion with bows in my ears! Eve-ryone said I looked beautiful!

Last month, I took my team to the annual walk in memory of Falko, the Police Dog killed in the line of duty. There were a lot of police and police K-9s there, firemen that I had met before, and lots of other dogs of different sizes, colors and shapes. The monies raised were going for equipment and training of the Police K-9s while they are working. We like to help others stay safe while they are protecting us every day.

My last outing was at a Block Watch meeting. I was able to meet the people of the area and they got to hear all about me and the exciting things I do. There were questions, and we were invited to their church party in August. I hope I’m available, because I love picnics. Maybe they’ll have PAWtato salad!!!

I will be ending July at the 6th Annual Lutheran Church Charities K-9 / KARE 9 Comfort Dog Conference. I’m so excited to see many of the pups I’ve worked with in the past year, as well as meet new ones. I heard that there will be about 90 dogs just like me there!

I’m counting the days until school begins. I really miss my school visits. I’m so anxious to meet new friends this year and tell them all about me and sharing my adventures with them.

One of the friends I hope to see is Cubby from Fort Collins, CO. Her Bible verse is:

The Lord himself goes before you and will be with you; He will never leave you nor forsake you. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged. Deuteronomy 31:8

Mexico Mission Trip Update Due to a serious and sudden illness, Pastor Tovar will be unable to host our mission team in Chihuahua, Mexi-co, September 16-23. Therefore, we are sending a team to Juarez to help eyeglass clinics under the Ysleta Lu-theran Mission. You can help us without leaving town! How? 1. Pray!

for our team as they prepare to learn and grow together for the Ysleta Lutheran Mission out of El Paso as they reach out with the saving Gospel of Jesus Christ For MOST Ministries, which is organizing mission efforts across the globe For the congregations working with us and providing follow-up care to clinic visitors

2. Help provide sunglasses! In desert areas like Juarez, which has blowing sand and dangerous levels of UV rays, sunglasses provide safety as well as comfort. Donated sunglasses can be left at labeled containers near the Welcome Centers.

Help show the love of Jesus to those in need! Got questions? Contact Deaconess Mary Anne Hibbard at [email protected] or call 586-764-3561

Confirmation Begins! Parents of students in Grades 7-8 should have received a letter with important Confirmation details! Here at Trinity, Confirmation is a 2-year process, with a Pre-Confirmation course for 6th grade students who do not attend school at Trinity. There will be an overnight Confirmation Retreat at the Seminary in Ft. Wayne, Friday-Saturday, August 18-19. This will be followed by a mandatory orientation meeting for all students in grades 7-8 and their parents on Wednesday, August 23, at 5:30pm. This meeting will include an overview of the coming Confirmation year, as well as schedules and class materials. If you have not received your letter, are not sure your child is on our Confirmation lists, or have other questions, please contact the church office at 419-385-2651 or [email protected].

Trinity Makes Giving Easy! We added another way to give! If you have a smartphone, you can download the tithe.ly app from the Google Play or Apple store and find our church and give

from your phone.

Please note that there is a processing fee associated with all electronic methods, but we want to share the convenience with you. God loves a cheerful giver! (2 Corinthians 9:7)

Got SCRIP? You can order Scrip on Sunday mornings and/or purchase a limited supply of Scrip in stock! If you drop off your order on Sunday, it will be available for pick-up from the office on Wednesday afternoon or the following Sunday. Proceeds from non-school families go to help the general fund!

From the Principal’s Desk: Anchored in Hope Trinity’s 143rd school year begins Thursday, August 17. Our theme this year is “Anchored in Hope.” It’s what Trinity has been about all these years. Many families have no anchor; they sway in the wind. Every day in our school, kids are Anchored in Hope, hearing the message of Christ. If you are not part of our school family, I would love to speak with you about attending Trinity!

Enrollment is now at its highest in 5 years! God continues to bless our school with great families who want the best academic preparation for their children and, more importantly, want to have the message of Christ echoed both at home and at school every day. Miss Courtney Hiegel is starting this year as our new Preschool teacher. She is eager to get started in her classroom and serve at Trinity. Make sure to stop in and welcome her! She will be commissioned and installed as a Minister of the Gospel on Sunday, August 6. Mrs. Angie Lashley will be our new Spanish teacher this school year. Her daughter is in Kindergarten and her son is in Preschool here at Trinity. We are excited to have Mrs. Lashley with us to start our Spanish Program! We are currently looking for an Extended Care Director. This position is 20-30 hours a week. Besides watching the kids, the director is also responsible for overseeing billing, snack purchases, Extended Care scheduling, and coordinating with Mr. Landskroener and Miss Hiegel.

Confirmation Begins!
