GORDON Dexter Gordon was among the earliest tenor players to adapt the bebop musical language of people such as Charlie Parker, Dizzy Gillespie, and Bud Powell to the tenor sax. In 1944, Dexter joined the Billy Eckstine band, the source of many of the Bebop innovators of the time and many of the most prominent bandleaders of the future. He played nightly with Sarah Vaughan, Dizzy Gillespie, Fats Navarro, Sonny Stitt, Gene Ammons, John Malachi, and other architects of the new music. In 1960, Dexter was approached by Alfred Lion to sign with Blue Note Records. For five years, he recorded numerous sessions which are all considered classics. The Blue Note recordings allowed him the opportunity to record with Freddie Hubbard, Bobby Hutcherson, Barry Harris, Kenny Drew, Horace Parlan, Bud Powell, and Billy Higgins. In 1976, Dexter enjoyed a hero’s welcome in the U.S. when he made his return engagement after a stay of over ten years in Europe at Storyville in New York City with Woody Shaw, Louis Hayes, Ronnie Mathews, and Stafford James. He subsequently played the Village Vanguardand signed with Columbia Records. Our tribute to this giant of the tenor will feature material from throughout his career including classics such as There will never be another you, But not for me, Doxy, A Train, Stella by starlight, Like someone in love and others. Tonight the band will be led by Tommy Harris on saxes ably supported by Dave Jones on piano, Ashley John Long on bass and Ian Poole on drums.
