Once upon a timea Deer lived in aforest near a lake.Not far from thesame lake, aWoodpecker had anest in the top of aWoodpecker had anest in the top of atree; and in the lakelived a Turtle. Thethree were friends,and lived together

happily.

A hunter,wandering about inthe wood, saw thefootprints of theDeer near the edgeof the lake. "I musttrap the Deer, goingtrap the Deer, goingdown into the water,"he said, and settinga strong trap ofleather, he went hisway.

Early that nightwhen the Deer wentdown to drink, hewas caught in thewas caught in thetrap, and he criedthe cry of capture.

At once theWoodpecker flew downfrom her tree-top, andthe Turtle came out ofthe water to see whatcould be done.

"Friend, you haveteeth, you gnawthrough the leathertrap. I will go and seeto it that the hunterkeeps away. If we bothdo our best, our friendwill not lose his life.will not lose his life.“Said the Woodpeckerto the Turtle.

So the Turtle beganto gnaw the leather,and the Woodpeckerflew to the hunter'shouse.

At dawn the huntercame, knife in hand, tothe front door of hishouse. The Woodpecker,flapping her wings, flewat the hunter and struckat the hunter and struckhim in the face. Thehunter turned back intothe house and lay downfor a little while.

Then he rose up again,and took his knife. He saidto himself: "When I wentout by the front door, aBird flew in my face; now Iwill go out by the backdoor." So he did.

The Woodpeckerthought: "The hunter wentout by the front doorbefore, so now he willleave by the back door."So the Woodpecker sat ina tree near the backdoor.

When the hunter cameout the bird flew at himout the bird flew at himagain, flapping her wingsin the hunter's face.

Then the hunterturned back and lay downagain. When the sunarose, he took his knife,and started out oncemore.

This time the Woodpeckerflew back as fast as she couldfly to her friends, crying,"Here comes the hunter!“ Bythis time the Turtle had gnawedthrough all the pieces of thetrap but one. The leather wasso hard that it made his teethfeel as if they would fall out.feel as if they would fall out.His mouth was all covered withblood. The Deer heard theWoodpecker, and saw thehunter, knife in hand, comingon. With a strong pull the Deerbroke this last piece of thetrap, and ran into the woods.

The Woodpeckerflew up to her nest inthe tree-top. But theTurtle was so weak hecould not get away. Helay where he was. Thelay where he was. Thehunter picked him up andthrew him into a bag,tying it to a tree.

The Deer saw thatthe Turtle was taken,and made up his mind tosave his friend's life. Sothe Deer let the huntersee him.

The hunter seizedsee him.

The hunter seizedhis knife and startedafter the Deer. TheDeer, keeping just out ofhis reach, led the hunterinto the forest.

When the Deer sawthat they had gone farinto the forest he slippedaway from the hunter,and swift as the wind, heand swift as the wind, hewent by another way towhere he had left theTurtle.

But the Turtle wasnot there. The Deercalled, "Turtle, Turtle!";and the Turtle called out,"Here I am in a baghanging on this tree.“Then the Deer lifted theThen the Deer lifted thebag and throwing it uponthe ground, he tore thebag open, and let theTurtle out.

The Woodpeckerflew down from her nest,and the Deer said tothem: "You two friendssaved my life, but if westay here talking, thehunter will find us, andhunter will find us, andwe may not get away. Sodo you, FriendWoodpecker, fly away.And you, Friend Turtle,dive into the water. I willhide in the forest.“

The hunter did comeback, but neither theDeer, nor the Turtle, northe Woodpecker was tobe seen. He found hisbe seen. He found historn bag, and pickingthat up he went back tohis home.

The three friendslived together all therest of their lives.
