Audience Connect will help film and media professionals understand the creative and business potential that comes from understanding the changing relationship between content and audience.

The event is designed for producers, filmmakers, exhibition and distribution professionals, those working in film and media education and students, as well as professionals in other media and arts interested in widening the market value of their intellectual property.

It will offer compelling ideas on building consumer relationships in a demand-driven age and will look at ways in which audience knowledge can be turned into value from the earliest stages of development to exhibition.

The day will consider what changing patterns of demand mean for the way that film and media content is distributed and exhibited, and for the kind of films funded and produced.

And the programme will offer ideas on how to put audience understanding, interaction and engagement at the heart of a dynamic, diverse and sustainable film culture.

Aims of the Day

Creative Skillset sponsoredHow can we create a diverse film culture with deep connections, with strong bonds between film-maker and audience? The wide-ranging presentation will look at how audiences can be developed and nurtured through education and social media, and at the future opportunities for an engaged and informed film industry.

Sponsored by Creative Skillset CymruUnderstanding and reaching your audience. This session will look at the creative and business potential that comes with understanding changing patterns of consumer demand and creating new links with audiences. The discussion will focus on the challenges and opportunities for all forms of media and film distribution and exhibition.

How to make films and cross-media content with, rather than for, audiences. The session will explore ways that audiences can become collaborators and partners in the development of content. Weiler will argue that the commercial and cultural potential of a changing media landscape begins, not with technology, but with a different view of the relationship between media and consumer.

A Deep Culture of Storytelling

Funded by the Arts Council of Wales, Welsh Government and the BFI, the Film Agency for Wales is committed to supporting sustainable growth in the Welsh film sector and improving access to film and its benefits for the people of Wales.

We work across the sector supply chain, supporting film development, production, cinemas, film festivals and film and media education. We offer advice, funding, skills advancement and advocacy.

Development and production funding is available for British qualifying feature films that benefit Wales, with a particular emphasis on building the infrastructure of Welsh talent, especially producers, writers and directors. Increasingly we’re supporting the broader business ethos of companies, offering bespoke mentored programmes such as Film Junction and by encouraging and co-financing the production of complimentary intellectual property, such as book publishing, soundtracks, and television and stage adaptation.

Audiences across Wales have improved access to independent film through cinemas and festivals supported by the Film Agency, and through multiple film and media education opportunities from school based initiatives such as FilmClub, through to the BIG Lottery supported community project, Film in Afan.

In 2010 the Film Junction programme was designed by The Film Agency for Wales and Programme Leader Angus Finney as a bespoke training scheme for Feature Film Producers.

Focusing on Creative Management, Business Planning and Reaching the user, the training was supported by mentors Ed Guiney and Andrew Lowe (Element Pictures), Paul Trijbits (Ruby Films), Andrea Calderwood (Slate Films), Robin Gutch (Warp), Laurence Bowen (Feelgood Fiction) and Julie Baines (Dan Films).

Market Mentors

In 2012 -13 Production companies with a feature film focus had the unique opportunity to be mentored by established distribution executives, thanks to the second iteration of Film Junction.

The Film Junction - Market Mentors programme partnered promising feature film producers, who had made one or more films or equivalent creative content, with established distributors who acted as personal mentors throughout the programme duration. Participants were able to consider the development of their projects with direct market knowledge at an early stage, whilst also considering their company and business planning. Consideration was given to the evolving market and business practices, including the producer/distributor relationship and deal terms, whilst presenting networking and opportunities to share knowledge with the cohort.

This programme built on and was complimentary to the previous Film Junction producer mentoring scheme, whilst also standing alone as a programme for new applicants from across the UK.

Each producer identified a slate of projects in their application. Prior to the first session, producers were matched with distributors, and they discussed their slate with their mentor and agreed which project to concentrate on during the programme. They then subsequently met three times as the project package was developed for market.

This scheme was funded by the Creative Skillset Film Skills Fund as part of ‘A Bigger Future 2’, the UK film skills strategy. The Creative Skillset Film Skills Fund is supported by the National Lottery through the BFI and the film industry through the Skills Investment Fund.
