HENRY VIII POSTHUMOUS (1547-1551)

2245 Groat, Southwark mint, fi fth bust, no mintmark (S2404; N1872) a nicely detailed and far better portrait of the aged King than normally seen in either the third coinage or posthumous issues of Henry, small stress break on lower edge otherwise toned gVF

The legends and forks not fully struck up making precise attribution diffi cult but the presence of incurved mascle after REX and diamond pellet stop before CIVITAS suggest this piece belongs to the posthumous coinage rather than the lifetime issues of Henry, following the classifi cation criteria set out in North Est. $1,000

2581 Wreck of the Nicobar, four pieces of Swedish ‘platmynt’ or copper plate money, traces of the offi cial circular countermarks although extensive deterioration from two hundred years of salt water immersion has rendered the main details illegible, Poor-Fair, comes with certifi cates attesting the origin from the Nicobar salvage. Fascinating relics of this tragic and historic shipwreck despite the condition.

The Danish Asiatic Company vessel ‘Nicobar’, en route to India in 1783 with a cargo of Swedish ‘platmynt’, entered False Bay on the southern tip of Africa and took on 18 sailors and several women who had survived an earlier shipwreck. Leaving False Bay on 10 July she encountered a severe storm and was wrecked near the Ratel River the following day. The wreck lay undetected until it was discovered by fi shermen in 1987. The subsequent salvage of the wreck’s remains recovered approx 3000 pieces of platmynt, the largest ever fi nd of these huge coins Est. $200
