A GUIDE TO PREMIER WOMENS GRADE PLAYER ELIGIBILITY A player that is a member of an Auckland Cricket Association member club is eligible to play for that club.

A player that is a member of an Auckland Cricket Association member club as well as being a Northern Districts representative player is eligible to play for that ACA member club under an agreement established some years ago between ACA, NDCA and NZC This agreement provides a club cricket playing opportunity for ND players when there is no Women’s club competition in the NDCA. Such players must state their representative preference at the commencement of any given season.

The exceptions to the above are:

A player from an Association other than Auckland that is a student at a tertiary institution in Auckland is eligible to play club cricket for an Auckland club whilst attending University / Polytechnic / etc. This involvement with an Auckland club will not prevent that player playing for her “home” club during the University holiday period, nor will it prevent her from playing for her “home” province in the State League or any other Women’s representative tournament at any time during the season.

If, at the request of New Zealand Cricket, ACA is asked to provide a club cricket playing opportunity for a player from outside of Auckland. ACA will consider such requests on a case by case basis and will advise clubs accordingly when such a request has been agreed to by ACA. In such instances, ACA will retain the right to choose which club the player should play for and will take into account any history the player may have with ACA club cricket when making that decision.

A GUIDE TO THE USE OF PLAYER UMPIRESIn a match where official umpires are not appointed, the batting side shall provide players to act as umpires throughout their own innings. There shall be no minimum or maximum time that any one player shall act as umpire.

If both captains agree, a supporter or manager or coach of one team may act as an umpire in any innings of a match. Where captains are not in agreement on the appointment of a non-player, the above ruling shall apply.

At any stage of a match where the fielding captain believes that a player / umpire is incompetent, he or she may make a polite request to the opposition captain for that player to be replaced, explaining the reasons why. The opposition captain is not obliged to adhere to this request but, in the interests of the game progressing within the guidelines of the “Spirit of Cricket”, would be advised to replace that player at the end of the over in which the request is made.

The ACA expect such an occurrence would be extremely rare and would be disappointed with any captain who made such a request without very strong reasons for doing so. (i.e. An obvious lack of knowledge of the rules of cricket being shown by the umpire in question.)

At all times, team captains are expected to act within the guidelines of the “Spirit of Cricket”, a philosophy now adopted as part of the laws of the game. A copy of the “Spirit of Cricket” is on page 18 of this handbook.

To give the Spirit of Cricket more visibility, Auckland Cricket continues to promote a Spirit of Cricket Campaign. The campaign titled ‘It’s about

RESPECT’ is based on a few simple questions:

THE LAWS OF CRICKET, 2000 CODEThe Preamble, The Spirit of Cricket Cricket is a game that owes much of its unique appeal to the fact that it should be played not only within its Laws but also within the Spirit of the Game. Any action which is seen to abuse this spirit causes injury to the game itself. The major responsibility for ensuring the spirit of fair play rests with the captains.

1. There are two Laws which place the responsibility for the team’s conduct firmly on the captain

Responsibility of captains

The captains are responsible at all times for ensuring that play is conducted within the Spirit of the Game as well as within the Laws.

Player’s conduct

In the event of a player failing to comply with instructions by an umpire, or criticising by word or action the decisions of an umpire, or showing dissent, or generally behaving in a manner which might bring the game into disrepute, the umpire concerned shall in the first place report the matter to the other umpire and to the player’s captain, and instruct the latter to take action.

2. Fair and unfair play

According to the Laws the umpires are the sole judges of fair and unfair play.

The umpires may intervene at any time and it is the responsibility of the captain to take action where required.

3. The umpires are authorised to intervene in cases of:

• Time wasting • Damaging the pitch

• Dangerous or unfair bowling

• Tampering with the ball

• Any other action that they consider to be unfair

4. The Spirit of the Game involves RESPECT for:

• Your opponents

• Your own captain and team

• The role of the umpires

• The game’s traditional values

www.aucklandcricket.co.nz 21

5. It is against the Spirit of the Game:

• To dispute an umpire’s decision by word, action or gesture

• To direct abusive language towards an opponent or umpire

• To indulge in cheating or any sharp practice, for instance:

a) to appeal knowing that the batsman is not out

b) to advance towards an umpire in an aggressive manner when appealing

c) to seek to distract an opponent either verbally or by harassment with persistent clapping or unnecessary noise under the guise of enthusiasm and motivation of one’s own side

6. Violence

There is no place for any act of violence on the field of play.

7. Players

Captains and umpires together set the tone for the conduct of a cricket match. Every

player is expected to make an important contribution to this.

The players, umpires and scorers in a game of cricket may be of either gender and the Laws apply equally to both. The use, throughout the text, of pronouns indicating the male gender is purely for brevity. Except where specifically stated otherwise, every provision of the Laws is to be read as applying to women and girls equally as to men and boys.
