Great minds think alike! Our most-popular repin from the July issue was this fabulous porch designed by Melissa Haynes of MH Design. We loved it too, which is why it appeared on the July cover.

That’s the question we asked ourselves as we began piecing together our annual Kitchen & Bath issue. Over the years, kitchens and bathrooms, once considered the most practical rooms in our homes, have become the most loved. They got bigger, more comfortable and soon, they were considered by many to be the most important. Gas stovetops and (cringe) toilets may not be the most glamorous of topics, but Arkansans seeking luxury refuse to be bound by hurdles such as these, and our annual Kitchen & Bath issue is always a favorite.

Nowadays, kitchens are so much more than spaces for preparing meals. A good kitchen can be a hangout spot, a dining room, an office or even a study room. It’s warm and welcoming, and it’s where memories are made. Bathrooms are now retreats, oases and escapes, offering spa-like amenities in the comfort of your own home.

That said, lots of homes have great kitchens and bathrooms, so what is it that makes a room worthy of our Kitchen & Bath issue? This month, we scoured the state for the newest, most innovative designs, each with that indescribable “wow” factor. Though we had many boldly colored cabinets, fabulous tiles and ingenious spacial configurations, the rooms we ultimately chose had a clever mix of characteristics that drew us in and made us want to put down roots.

This month’s homeowners run the gamut from families with children to empty nesters, and their respective wish lists were just as varied. The Lanfords, page 54, needed more space, the Jones, more light (page 70). The Hinkles on page 66 wanted a space for entertaining, while the Silvestris, page 60, wanted something that was uniquely their own.

Hopefully, this issue will help inspire your own kitchen and bath wish list—or at least add a few items to the one you already have. Though my kitchen is small, it’s inevitable that people will gather there, piled on top of one another, while I’m cooking. As I make my way down the ever-expanding kitchen “to-do” list, knocking out a wall becomes more and more tempting. Or maybe, I’ll work on a walk-in pantry first. There’s no doubt this issue has sparked my imagination. What will it do for you?

Kitchen classics

NaNcy SillS iS the curator of numerous collections, perhaps none more prized or enjoyed than her vintage and antique kitchen wares. From ceramic crocks and traditional wooden bread boards to rolling pins and baking tins, her own kitchen is home to a variety of cooking collectibles. “i keep my collections out on display so we can enjoy them,” says Sills, who resides in Maumelle with her husband adrian who also likes antiques.

indeed the displays are enjoyable for all who enter. Sills’ kitchen has all the charm of a 1940s general store alongside typical modern day conveniences. along with the aforementioned items, you’ll also find her collections of yellowware bowls, baskets, sugar buckets, creamers and textiles among the mix.

COLLECTIONS

Vintage cuisine collectibles are a Maumelle woman’s recipe for happinessBy TIFFANy BURGESS ADAMS

For Sills, it’s not about the value of the piece, but rather the hunt. “i love the thrill of finding something for a song. i found my first bread board for 50 cents at a flea market in Northwest arkansas,” she reminisces. in fact, during her early days at garage and estate sales, Sills set a five-dollar budget when it came to adding pieces to her collection. as for choosing the initial pieces and starting new collections, Sills admits she buys only what she likes. “When people ask what we are looking for, i reply, ‘Well, we won’t know until we see it,’” she laughs.

A rare find, fathers often carved bread boards for their daughters as

Made for Allinson Bread, an English company, this board was used as a cover for butter crocks.

Vintage spice tins add color and character to Sills’ collection. She particularly likes the round pie filling tin because it was made by Schwartz, which happens to be the married name of one of her daughters.

FASHION & BEAUTY

PICTUREPERFECTA Little Rock entrepreneur encourages fans to “kiss the competition goodbye” By Rosemary Hallmark

As a producer, casting agent, stylist and makeup artist, it’s no wonder that Little Rock’s Brooke Duszota is intrigued by all facets of the production world. It was this interest that led her to begin researching the specifics of cosmetic formulation, wanting to create products that were highly pigmented and able to last under hot studio lighting. “With a degree in marketing, years of experience in sales, a background in modeling and certification in makeup, it was a natural transition for me to wholeheartedly embrace the entrepreneurial calling,” she says. In 2009, Duszota created Bellisima Beauty, a line of photo- and film-quality cosmetics.

The next year, Duszota was attending her first Arkansas Razorbacks football game when inspiration struck. “I loved the energy from the fans dressed in red with painted faces, both their enthusiasm and the joy that surrounded the event,” she says. Inspired to contribute to this state pride, she began developing a high-impact red lip gloss especially for Razorback fans. Soon, Woo Pig Smoochie lip gloss was being sold in stores across the state. Since then, Duszota has developed two sorority glosses as well—Kiss a Kappa and Pucker Up Pi Phi, with more in the works.

Though she has an extensive background in the beauty industry, Duszota believes there is much more to beauty than cosmetics. “I always tell women that beauty is an opinion; it’s not a fact. My hope is when a client’s makeup is finished, she walks away with a realization of her potential—not based on physical attributes alone—and that her confidence shines through as she proceeds throughout her day.”

A plAce to relAx and to entertain were two top priorities when designer and landscape expert chris olsen set out to spruce up Jane and Ben Meade’s Fayetteville courtyard. “I wanted to compose a clean look with stately elegance,” he shares. “I really listen to the client and make sure the landscape is what they want and not just what I envision. of course, I can be persuasive,” he adds with a chuckle.

the home’s existing patio featured beautiful natural stonework and a charming outdoor fireplace, however it lacked personality. to create an equally chic and inviting space, olsen packed a punch into the formerly minimalistic landscape and used a cheerful, contemporary palette of orange, black and ivory to add visual interest on the furnishings. “I love the big round chaise. Its crisscross ivory-and-orange design is bold and fashionable, yet so inviting,” shares olsen. He searched for the perfect pieces of outdoor furniture to complement the space and in the end went with a custom design from Sunset patio, a line he carries at his little rock shop, Botanica Gardens. contemporary outdoor fabrics in a variety of prints add an air of whimsy to the aesthetic. “I always say that people need to think outside the box and do something that the neighbors are not doing,” says olsen.

A diverse mix of vegetation also helps to bring both depth and contrast to the backyard space. “the plants flow in drifts of texture and color. White, orange and purple are the staple colors blended with various hues of green,” he explains. White Swan coneflowers, ‘Autumn Joy’ sedums, english boxwoods, a ‘Forest pansy’ redbud and a sugar maple are just a few plants that embellish the cozy backyard. For an additional pop of color, the round stone beds are planted with a mix of Mexican zinnias and purple summer snapdragons, which both coordinate with the space’s color scheme.

Due to their often-limited width and natural placement, side yards have a tendency to become lost areas in many landscaping plans. olsen, however, was determined to make good use of this space and also make it cohesive with the rest of the garden’s design. classic metal obelisks, which olsen found at little rock’s Marshall clements, were just what he needed to add both height and visual interest. “Since the kitchen overlooks this area, I wanted to draw attention to the space rather than deter,” olsen explains. the planters create a sculptural element in keeping with the backyard’s contemporary-meets-traditional feel and draw the eye upward. Greenery groupings coupled with colorful blooms provide a soft juxtaposition, while stepping stones invite guests to stroll the path.

After neArly A decAde in one place, many homeowners begin to feel the itch to renovate. for one West little rock couple, the only question was where to start. Having enjoyed their home for nine years, they were looking to get their feet wet with a smaller project that would still have a big impact on their daily life and the master bath looked like just the place to begin. lucky for them, the space had good bones and “didn’t need a full redesign,” says Bill Wrape of distinctive Kitchens and Baths. “It just needed to be updated,” he adds. to give the space a

signature style reflective of the homeowners and their tastes, Wrape turned to Meridith Hamilton of MLH Designs. Together the pair blended practical with pretty for a traditional-style bath sure to stand the test of time.

First things first, to solve for more practical applications Hamilton and Wrape installed upper cabinets to add storage, something that topped the homeowners’ wish list. Electrical outlets were cleverly placed behind the cabinetry doors to make charging toothbrushes or even a smart phone possible without sacrificing counter space. To bring a polished aesthetic to the room, mirrored fronts were added to the upper cabinet doors. The mirrors also reflect light into the space, which was another thing the homeowners wanted to gain in the renovation. On the masculine side of the vanity wall, sconces provide additional task lighting. Hamilton chose a large framed mirror for his side, while a more feminine silhouette works perfectly for makeup application on her side of the space.

“The homeowners have very traditional taste,” says Hamilton “and they wanted the room to feel refreshing, simple and clean—but also

up-to-date.” With these thoughts in mind, Hamilton selected a creamy monochromatic palette for the walls, cabinetry and tub surround. One of the bath’s largest decorative focal points was actually born as a solution to a problem the homeowners faced. “They loved having the hardwood flooring in the bath, but did not want to step out of the shower onto that surface and preferred not to have a bathmat,” relates Hamilton. Rather than creating one small area of tile for shower exits, Hamilton incorporated the material into the bath’s overall design. “I wanted to tie the shower—and particularly this tile—into the rest of the bath, so I made it a large surround for the flooring area and even took it up the central shower wall,” she says.

The tile’s natural, dark hues stand in contrast to the monochromatic tones throughout the rest of the bath, making the shower wall, which faces the bath’s entry, a design focal point. “In the future, we may add a console table or piece of art there to change up the look,” says Hamilton of the area’s numerous design possibilities. “I love the way this came together, because it really adds flair and takes the design to the next level,” says Hamilton.

Kitchen designer Andi Stephens and the homeowner worked together to update the room with an open floor plan and personal touches that deem the space not only elegant, but also kid-friendly. The adjacent breakfast nook is great for working on school assignments, and the lowered countertop space (facing page), is short enough for little ones to reach.

By incorporating elements of furniture in the styling of the room, Stephens created a cozy, yet engaging space with cherry wood built-ins and cabinetry and millwork accents. Details, including the crystal pendant lights and botanical-inspired hardware, add personalization. A lover of literature, culinary arts and tradition, Stephens’ client is right at home in this space that brings all of her favorite things together.

A well-trAveled sophisticAte and seasoned homeowner, Andi stephens’ client has seen her fair share of kitchens, yet at the thought of her own renovation, she “didn’t really have specific must-haves, but knew exactly what she didn’t want,” begins stephens, designer and owner of Kitchen distributors in Fayetteville. An Arkansas native, the homeowner worked with stephens to balance the grand presence of her family’s victorian-revival estate with a “homey” comfort she’s always desired, starting with the kitchen.

the original space was “closed in—a series of small rooms,” according to stephens. An adjacent breakfast nook, now a charming feature of the room, was practically inaccessible on account of the inconvenient u-shaped layout, and although striking, the cherry wood butler’s pantry was inadvertently positioned so that guests had to walk past it to get to the dining room. “Basically, everything needed to be completely resituated, opened up and made more accessible from the kitchen,” says stephens.

“Many elements of the renovation reflect my client’s family-first values and passion for education,” continues the designer. this dedicated wife and mother wanted a room open to the kitchen where her daughter could work on assignments and enjoy family time. with the help of homes by ward, stephens and her team knocked out the jutted bar separating the breakfast nook from the kitchen and smoothed out the excessive angles in the room, drafting one all-inclusive, open-concept blueprint and giving them an all-new canvas for the design details.

“From the first day she walked into our showroom, she fell in love with the cottage celadon shade of green from wood-Mode cabinetry and its brown undercoat that are now on the refrigerator and opposite plate rack,” says stephens of her client’s love for the color palette. From there, the hues quickly grew to include creamy tones and cherry woods—a classic trio for a lifelong devotee to the traditional aesthetic. stephens consulted Joanna Mccusker of New century counter tops, who installed honed granite countertops in Bianco romano in the kitchen, and calcutta marble in the baking area. in a similar fashion, a white subway-tile backsplash and airy cabinetry cast a welcome lightness over the space. the cherry woods, including the butler’s pantry and built-in hutch, are

After playing with several color combinations for the cabinetry, Stephens and the homeowner finally landed on a classic trio including Cottage Celadon green, creamy marbles, and Tuscan Sun-finished cherry woods. Practical, yet stylish distressed finishes add character to the busiest room in the house. This color palette and the homeowner’s signature bird motif spill into the rest of the home for a cohesive feel.

finished in Wood-Mode’s Tuscan Sun and are heavily distressed, a smart way to hide scratches and fingerprints in a high-traffic area. The breakfast nook table, which was a gift from the homeowner’s mother and happened to fit perfectly into the space, also coordinates with the cherry wood hues.

Details were important when it came to the appliances and they carefully considered the family’s lifestyle. The space features a Miele coffeemaker, steam oven (a favorite of the homeowner and great for vegetables!), a wine refrigerator and a microwave as well as warming drawers. Stephens introduced warmth and coziness to the space by incorporating furniture elements in the details. No piece brings this notion to life quite like the Sub-Zero refrigerator, which—thanks to cabinetry panels—has been made to look like an armoire. “You can see [other furniture elements] in the bookshelves, moulding details, the turned posts used at the sink and the island, the beadboard cabinetry and the ‘bonnet tops’ on the plate rack,” Stephens notes.

A veritable playground for an organized but busy homemaker, the renovated space not only offers everyday function, but also peace of mind for a mother who looks forward to cooking with her family here for years to come. “My client is, among many other things, a vegetarian and gardener, so cooking with integrity is a big part of her life,” reveals Stephens. “I wanted to give her the ultimate space in which to live out her culinary ideal.”

Patty and Stephen Lanford loved the cozy cottage style of their Hillcrest bungalow, so they chose to infuse it with character-rich details including beadboard cabinets in a creamy yellow color. Facing page: Taggart added seating in a cramped space by building a bench seat and flanking it with built-ins, making the wall of windows a focal point.

Two years ago when PaTTy Jolliff Lanford moved into the hillcrest bungalow of her new husband stephen and his two sons, the couple was introduced to a common problem among blended families: an influx of people and a loss of elbow room. “we were bursting at the seams, constantly bumping into each other,” Lanford says. The couple considered moving, but loved both their house and its neighborhood too much to leave; yet they were also weary of a renovation.

“we wanted to infuse our kitchen with freshness and light, and we wanted to add youth to something that was really old, but we didn’t want to just gut it and lose the history of the house,” Lanford says. at an impasse, she called Burt Taggart of Taggart Design group. “when Burt started talking about the soul of the house, we knew we had the right person.”

Phase one of the renovation involved opening up the space and making the kitchen more conducive to this family’s lifestyle. “we were trying to be contextual and honor the style of the house, but amplify it and refine it more than what it was when we arrived,” Taggart explains. walls came down and a new, open-concept space came to life. “They wanted the kitchen to have some connectivity to the rest of the living spaces,” Taggart says. “we tried to keep it open to both sides of the adjacent spaces, so you can move around and cook but still have a conversation with people in the other rooms.”

The Lanfords loved the cozy cottage look of typical Craftsman-style bungalows, so beadboard detailing was added to the cabinet doors, while classic subway tile and speckled granite countertops are clean and understated. Taggart was able to refinish and patch the home’s original flooring, giving new life to the old hardwoods. “I had to lose a window, which is hard to do in an old house,” Lanford says, “but Burt was able to put a small window in above the sink that lets more light in.”

The most surprising part of the Lanfords’ kitchen renovation is the bold color choice, one that came about by

Page 59: Athomeinarkansas sept2013

September 2013 | athomearkansas.com 57

Storage was something that topped the Lanfords’ short list of must-haves in the new kitchen, so Taggart added built-ins with old-fashioned glass front doors and drawers underneath. “I was really hoping for some kind of cabinet or hutch that looked like a piece of furniture,” says Lanford. “The way they built it, it looks like it has been here forever.”

accident. “Bold colors can be a little bit of a slippery slope, especially on something like cabinets where you’re really making a commitment,” Taggart explains. “If we had any advice as Patty pushed for brighter and brighter yellows, it was to keep the color muted. Whatever tone she went for, choose the softest version of that color.”

“We probably had eleven shades of yellow on the wall,” laughs Lanford. “We knew we wanted a soft yellow on the walls and a cream on the cabinets, but when the cabinet color went up, it ended up more yellow. But we love it. We consider it a happy accident.”

In the adjacent dining area, windows cover an exterior wall, letting sunlight fill the space. Taggart and his team improved this feature by flanking the windows with built-ins and adding a window seat underneath. The bench acts as seating for one side of the dining table and has a lift-up seat for added storage. “It took so much creative problem-solving to take a tiny space and create so much storage,” Lanford says.

The most important part of the Lanfords’ renovation, however, was getting a kitchen that felt not only personal, but like something they could continue to grow into for as long as possible. “It makes us really happy. It makes us look forward to coming home,” says Lanford. “It might be a little thing to a lot of people, but it was huge to us. We feel like we’re planting roots and forming tradition, and Burt has a lot to do with that.”

“She loved color and wasn’t afraid to use it,” says designer Leslie Tetrev of her client Kim Silvestri, whose kitchen is filled with a mix of hues. Sherwin-Williams Silvermist covers the cabinetry, while a custom paint, similar to the brand’s Black Fox hue, was used for the island. The range hood is painted the same color as Silvestri’s dining room and the backs of the display cases also play off that room’s décor, allowing the home to flow.

Designing the kitchen for the new construction home she shares with her husband, Don, was not something kim silvestri entered into lightly. it took years of planning—four to be exact—and a bit of help from a trusted designer along with lots of conversations with a close friend. “We waited four years to build after purchasing our lot, and i spent that time cutting things out of magazines and gathering pictures of rooms and products i liked,” says silvestri.

kathy scharff, a close friend of silvestri’s suggested she put the clippings to good use by making inspiration boards. “i made a board for every room in this house,” laughs silvestri. so it’s no surprise when it came time to put the inspiration to use, she was prepared. she took her boards to inside effects in Little Rock where, with the help of designer Leslie tetrev, she was able to make the vision a reality.

“she walked in one day, saw it and immediately fell in love,” says tetrev of the Vintage granite slab, which became the countertop for the kitchen island as well as the color basis for the kitchen. “i even sent my friend kathy a picture to let her know i had found the perfect piece,” laughs silvestri of the aha! design moment. From there silvestri pulled the color for the wall cabinetry from a hue seen in the slab to carry the serene appeal throughout the space. however, selecting a color for the island cabinetry proved to be a bit more complicated. “i have always loved sherwin-Williams’ Black Fox and wanted to use it in my home, but when we started painting the island,

it came out looking more purple in the room,” says Silvestri. Not to be deterred, she conversed with her friend Scharff and the two decided on a custom mix that gives an effect similar to Black Fox.

Aside from the work surfaces, there were several other must-haves on Silvestri’s wish list. “My previous home was very busy, and I really wanted this house to have a natural, calming feel that takes our view [of Conway’s Lake Carol-Dan] into account and doesn’t have a lot of ornamentation,” says Silvestri of her motivation behind the design and its peaceful presence. Casement windows, which offer an abundance of both natural light and fresh air, play heavily into the room’s color scheme by allowing nature into the home. In a similar manner, classic pendants, which hang over the island, provide plenty of light without becoming a focal point.

Finally, since the Silvestri’s children are grown and living on their own now, she knew it would be smart to add a few practical features for empty nesters. She chose dishwashing drawers over a traditional full-load dishwasher for the convenience and energy-saving appeal of smaller loads. And while they may have benefited from the expertise of a knowledgeable designer and the style guidance of a trusted friend, the space is now truly a reflection of the Silvestris and their initial inspiration pieces.

The kitchen opens to the home’s den, allowing conversations to carry throughout the space. The display cases in the kitchen mimic the style of the living room’s built-in bookcases. Silvestri stores her silver collection, which includes pieces from her wedding as well as her in-laws’ marriage in 1951, in the cases to keep them close at hand when entertaining. The CobbLer’s ChILdren mAy need new shoes, but that stereotype doesn’t hold true for this homebuilding husband-and-wife team. erin and don hinkle have lived in six houses in the ten years since they began developing homes on Lake hamilton, and by now—with help from a trusted team of architects and designers—they are able to execute their vision easily.

don, who ran manufacturing plants for Kohler, and erin, who worked in information technology for an education company, came into homebuilding by chance after erin looked at a wooded piece of property near hot springs, where the couple owned a condominium and kept their horses. “All I saw were trees and weeds,” she says, “but don saw a neighborhood.” Together, they began Arkota developers, Inc.—named for Arkansas and don’s home state of south dakota—on nights and weekends, and are now beginning their third subdivision.

In their latest masterpiece, a mediterranean-style lakeside villa built in 2011, the kitchen is a hard-working showcase ideal for entertaining. “nothing on my wish list was left out,” says erin. “I love to cook and entertain, and this is the perfect setup.” Two large islands anchor the space, which is open to an eating area with a round copper-topped table and the great room, which faces the spacious pool deck and lake beyond. on the floor, porcelain tile made to resemble wood planks is a durable solution that holds up to wet feet coming in from the home’s saltwater pool.

The larger granite-topped island is the real workhorse: it features seating for four, a deep single-basin sink and a raised dishwasher. erin installed it this way to better accommodate her five-foot-ten frame. overhead, a pair of pendant lights with delicate mercury glass shades provides task lighting.

erin and designer Julie nichols created the second island to resemble an antique table. The distinctive turquoise paint adds a touch of color to the space. When hosting parties, erin uses the dark hardwood surface as a buffet table. “This is where life happens,” she says. “When we have people over, this is where everyone always ends up congregating.”

Along the wall, a 48-inch, six-burner Thermador stove is centered beneath a stone archway. “We added the arch after the kitchen was framed,” erin recalls. “I thought it needed something and Julie came up with the idea, driving my husband crazy.” Custom cabinets follow the graceful arc of the stone and frame a vent hood that has been faux-finished to resemble aging copper, contributing to the kitchen’s old-world style.

The most interesting part of the kitchen is what you don’t see. A butler’s pantry holds a microwave, an ice maker and a second dishwasher, “so I can hide all of the dirty dishes when I entertain,” erin explains. don worked with a carpenter to design cabinet-fronts for the refrigerator and full-size freezer. “now they look like a piece of furniture—it is my favorite part of the kitchen,” says erin.

The island’s bar sink is ideal for use by guests when the larger sink is occupied. When the couple entertains, crowds often gather at the raised bar. On quieter days, the copper-top table in the room’s small breakfast nook is perfect for quick family dinners and snacks. When Mona and ToM Jones were introduced to 3Gd Inc. co-founders Rich Brya and Porter Winston in 2001, they were also introduced to a new and refreshing contemporary aesthetic that fit their lifestyle perfectly. Twelve years and two houses later, they haven’t looked back. The couple’s current dwelling sits atop a hillside in Fayetteville with idyllic views and lots of privacy—a perfect setting for an open, light-filled master bathroom.

“They wanted the master bath to be luxurious and private,” says Rich Brya, principal architect at 3Gd Inc., who teamed up with interior designer andrea Cornwell of ispace LLC for the project. having worked with the Joneses on two previous homes, Brya knew the couple preferred a clean look with lots of natural light. skylights filter sunlight into all parts of the bathroom, while an expansive window allows for views of both the abundant wildlife and the thoughtful architectural lines and mahogany siding of the home. “It’s not an outdoor shower, but it has that feel,” Brya explains.

a wet room houses the bathtub and an open shower space, which features a multi-spray showerhead. “My husband calls it the ‘carwash’

shower because of all the sprayers,” Jones laughs. Cornwell chose gray honed tiles by ann sacks for the shower walls and tub surround, which add sleek sophistication and echo the mahogany siding outside. “here, the interior and exterior of the home are congruent,” Byra explains. “It’s a self-referential design in that you look out the window and see the design on the outside of the house and it flows with the design of the inside.”

The wet room is divided from the rest of the bathroom by a large glass wall, which allows light from the windows and skylights to carry over to the countertop and vanity area. here, Cornwell used polished Carrara marble and honed matchstick tiles from ann sacks to mimic the shower tiles on a smaller scale. Chrome fixtures, glass vessel sinks and matte chrome hardware combine for a polished overall effect. In addition to double sinks, the his-and-hers upper corner cabinets on either side of the vanity open on both sides and have outlets for appliances, keeping cords and clutter off the countertops.

Though Jones loves the functionality of her master bath, she says her favorite part is the abundant natural light. “I love the lightness of the entire room and its simplicity,” she says. “It’s clean, harmonious and beautiful.”

In the wet room, Cornwell used honed tiles on the shower walls and tub surround and mosaic matchsticks on the shower floor, both in Luxor Grey from Ann Sacks. A Kohler multi-spray showerhead offers a spa-like experience. In keeping with the modern, monochromatic palette, Cornwell used Sherwin-Williams’ Summit Gray for the vanities and Crushed Ice for the walls and ceiling.
