2014 IRONMAN Malaysia, Langkawi ATHLETE INFORMATION GUIDE 6

2014 IRONMAN Malaysia, Langkawi ATHLETE INFORMATION GUIDE 7

We are using the Triathlon Malaysia Race Competition Rules in alignment with the special IRONMAN Rules and operate under the “three strikes and you are out” principle. Any and all infringements across the event count toward your 3-strikes. In other words, any combination of 3 rule infringements will result in disqualification (DQ).

Three particular special rules you need to be aware of are:

1. The draft distance is 12-metres (7 bike lengths) between bikes (back wheel to front wheel).2. A pass MUST be completed once the 12-metre

distance is entered i.e. athletes may not drop back out of the draft distance.

3. There is no draft zone around each bike so side-by-side riding, unless passing, is blocking.During the Bike leg, Drafting, Blocking, Illegal Pass, Helmet and Littering infringements incur a 4-minute time penalty to be served at the next Penalty Box on the lap the infringement is advised by a Technical Official. Failure to stop at the next Penalty Box or not stop on the lap the infringement is issued September result in a DQ.

To minimise any misunderstanding on race day, the following summarises the above rules.

Avoid a BLOCKING infringement by riding on the left side of the bike lane

Avoid a DRAFTING infringement by:

1. Keeping 12-metres between yourself and the cyclist in front of you – back wheel to front wheel 2. Completing your pass within 25-seconds 3. Dropping back 12-metres once passed before attempting to re-pass

4. When passing a number of cyclists not “dropping in” between cyclists unless the distance is greater than 12-metres

Avoid an ILLEGAL PASS infringement by passing other athletes on the right.

Avoid a LITTERING infringement by not throwing away ANYTHING except when approaching or exiting aid stations.

Avoid a HELMET infringement by always having your chin strap securely fastened when moving with your bike.

Other common rule infringements are…

UNAUTHORISED EQUIPMENT – absolutely no cell phones, MP3 players, Oakley Thumps, iPods or other audio listening or communication devices.

OUTSIDE ASSISTANCE – do NOT accept any assistance from anyone other than race personnel and do not have non-racers ride or run alongside you.

Triathlon is an individual event and it is your responsibility to fully understand the rules and avoid infringements. A Technical Official’s ruling is final in the case of Drafting, Blocking, and Illegal Pass infringements (Judgment Calls) and these are not subject to either protest or appeal.

There is no Penalty Box on the Run course however if you receive an infringement on the run leg for Outside Assistance you will serve a four (4) minute time penalty with the Technical Official. For any other infringement on the run leg you will serve an on-course Stop/Start Penalty with the Technical Official.

Please remember public urination is a MALAYSIA legal offence and will result in penalties or a DQ. On course toilet facilities are provided at the aid stations as well as existing public toilets.

Remember to treat other athletes, volunteers and officials with courtesy and consideration as failure to do so is Unsportsmanlike Conduct and may result in a DQ.

I sincerely hope you have a great race and achieve your IRONMAN goals.

Race Referee Shanelle Barrett

A MESSAGE FROM THE RACE REFEREE

2014 IRONMAN Malaysia, Langkawi ATHLETE INFORMATION GUIDE 8

ATHLETE CHECK-INCheck-In for all competitors in the IRONMAN Malaysia will take place on Wednesday 24 – Thursday 25 September ONLY. Check-In is located at Langkawi Fair Shopping Mall and will take place between 10am and 6pm on Wednesday and 10am and 5pm Thursday. It is compulsory for all athletes to Check-In during these times. No competitor will be accepted after 5pm on Thursday 25 September. We cannot be responsible for late arrivals so allow for mishaps when making travel arrangements.

You must show photo identification to register – i.e. Driver’s License, Passport. When checking-in, please do not take your bike into the queue as this congests the area and makes it dangerous for other competitors. Bikes are not permitted inside the Langkawi Fair Shopping Mall. Bike racks will be provided outside the venue but it is advised you provide your own security.

Please note it is illegal for someone to race under your name or for you to race under someone else’s name: this will result in suspension from your National Triathlon Association and ineligibility to race in other IRONMAN events.

During check-in athletes will receive the following:

ID wrist band (to be worn as soon as you check-in and worn at all times until after the IRONMAN Awards Night if you are attending. This wristband is your entry to the Athlete Welcome Dinner, Athlete Compulsory Race Briefing and Awards Night)

Race bib (compulsory on the run leg only)

Swim cap – colour based on age category (this must be worn over all other caps)

Helmet sticker (placed on the front of your helmet)

Bike seat post sticker (to wrap around the seat post of your bike and stick to itself)

Special Needs sticker (to be stuck onto each Special Needs Bag)

Body Tattoo (number to be placed on right upper arm and letter category to be placed on right calf)

 3 gear bags:

• Blue Bike Bag• Red Run Bag• Black Street Gear Bag

 Sponsor promotional items

ATHLETE ID WRISTBANDYour ID wrist band must be worn at all times as this will be essential to gain entry to competitor only restricted areas. This is your only means of gaining entry to transition to rack your bike pre-race and to collect your gear and bike after the race. Please note, only athletes are permitted into the transition area.

TIMING You will need to collect your timing chip and confirm your identity with the timing personnel during Check-In. At this stage you will check that the number on your chip corresponds with your race number and personal information. Make sure you put it in a safe place and also remember to have it with you on Race Day morning.

Timing Chips must be worn on the LEFT ankle (if it’s on your wrist you won’t get a time)

On race morning you must wear your timing chip to enter transition. Volunteers will be checking this.

If you do not start the race or pull out of the race for any reason you must return the timing chip to the Drop Out Clerk or Information Booth at transition, or return it to a race official. If your timing chip is not returned or is lost you will be charged $150 for a replacement.

Timing results will include Swim split, Bike split, Run split and Finish time – overall and category results.

WEIGH INAll athletes must complete the compulsory weigh-in process at Check-In. This record is critical for the Medical Response team to assist with the correct treatment if required.

NO BAND = NO ACCESS

They may provide some tools and spares to enable athletes to conduct their own repairs, however the mechanics are unable to carry out any repairs for the athlete. Spare wheels will not be available from mechanics. Due to the complexities of operating such a service under racing conditions, we recommend athletes carry their own bike repair kit as delays are expected.

BIKE AND RUN COURSE AID STATION SETUP:

TOILETSToilets will be located at the near to the Start area, inside Transition and at the finish line precinct. There will also be toilets available at every Aid Station along the course.

HYDRATIONBy now most people are aware that sporting events can lead to significant dehydration which can have performance, health and safety consequences. What people do not always know is how to most effectively get and stay hydrated. An important thing to remember is that we can lose fluid faster than we can physiologically replace it. It is for this reason that you as an athlete need to have a hydration plan.

Pre-EventMake sure you are hydrated before you begin your activity. If you are dehydrated before you start, you will quickly enter the danger zone.

Stay HydratedThe amount of fluid you need to consume during exercise is dependent on the intensity and also the weather conditions. The best way to achieve this is to sip very frequently, approximately 4 or 5 sips every 10 minutes.

AfterBecause your metabolic rate continues to be elevated for some time after your sport, you will need to keep drinking and consume another 50% of what you drank during your sporting effort.

2014 IRONMAN Malaysia, Langkawi ATHLETE INFORMATION GUIDE 22

IMPORTANT COURSE INFORMATION - MONKEY ZONE OVERVIEWA Monkey Zone has been identified along the Bike Course. The local area of Datai is renowned for a high concentration of monkeys. The zone is located between 46km – 58km, 133km – 145km as illustrated on the map above.

Athlete should expect to see monkeys beside and on the road particularly in this zone. Athletes need to be cautious and aware of their surrounds whilst in the area and ride to the conditions.

The Organiser advises athletes that this is a “NO FOOD ZONE”, where athletes should not consume gels, bars or nutritional items and littering will be a major offence.

PERSONAL SAFETY Some simple rules for athletes on the Bike Course to help understand the behaviour of monkeys and reduce the risk of incidents, and should be promoted to the public so they can take appropriate self-precautions.

The below points are promoted by the Langkawi Development Authority (LADA) and are taken into considerations when undertaking activities throughout the event;

• DO NOT feed the monkeys: feeding one monkey will attract many more and denying food can trigger aggressive behaviour.

• DO NOT litter: Discarding litter and waste for food remnants will increase the association of human with food.

• DO NOT stop or slow down: Stopping or slowing down to view monkeys will attract more monkeys and can be a sign of threat and aggression.

• DO NOT take photos: flashes and reflections from the camera lens can trigger aggressive behaviour.

• DO NOT play or grab items: using a bag strap or clothing for play or tug of war can trigger aggressive behaviour.

• Avoid eye contact with monkeys: showing the whites of your eye is a sign of threat and aggression. Avoid smiling at monkeys; showing your teeth is a sign of threat and aggression

If you are threatened by a monkey: stand your ground, wave your arms, or pick up a stick if there are any available. If you must retreat, back away slowly while still facing the monkey; running or showing fear will encourage their behaviour rather than causing them to back down.

If you are bitten by a monkey: immediately scrub with clean water and soap. Every scratch or bite must be checked by a doctor as soon as possible. Monkeys are regular carriers of rabies; even the ones not rabid can create dangerous infections and fevers due to the high level of bacteria in their mouths.

Rabies has no early symptoms and is fatal if not treated immediately.

TRANSITION PROCEDURE – BIKE TO RUN As you dismount your bike in the Bike Finish Chute, volunteer ‘bike catchers’ will take your bike for racking. Hand your bike off to the catcher, (do not throw as this will be deemed as unsportsmanlike conduct and may result in disqualification), and proceed into the Change Tent to collect your Red Run Bag.

Red Run Bags will be hanging on racks in numerical order. Separate male and female change areas are inside the marquee and volunteers will assist you with your transition. You must enter the change area even if you only need to put on running shoes. You will not be allowed to change into any run gear outside the change tent as per Triathlon Australia regulations. You must place discarded bike gear in the emptied Red Run Bag and hand to awaiting volunteers before exiting the tent.

CUT OFF TIME – 17 hours after Start Time

RUN COURSE SUMMARYAthletes will exit Transition onto the Run Course heading into Kuah Town towards Langkawi Eagle Square to begin their four laps. Athletes will then head north winding past Legenda Park and CHOGM Park and out of town through quiet, local streets before entering the stadium grounds and towards the run turnaround at the front of Langkawi Stadium.

Returning past local night markets and through beautiful parklands, athletes will experience the best Malaysia has to offer, where locals and spectators alike will line the streets, embracing the tropical IRONMAN Malaysia Run Course.

RUN COURSE LAP WRISTBANDSAthletes will be handed a silicone wristband as they exit from the Langkawi Eagle Square at the Legenda Park Car Park. 2014 IRONMAN Malaysia, Langkawi ATHLETE INFORMATION GUIDE 26

A Contingency Committee has been established to consult, make decisions and manage the implementation of any contingency plan. The following individuals will sit on the committee:

Race Director David RayEvent Manager CG LimRace Referee Shanelle Barrett

The Contingency Committee will meet at 9:00am on Thursday 25 & Friday 26 September to discuss any forecasted extreme weather patterns for Race Day and review plans in the event of cancelling or altering any component(s) of the race. If the Committee’s decision is to change the advertised event format, this will be advised to competitors on the day this is taken i.e. Athlete Check-In, Welcome Dinner (Thursday 25 September) and Bike Check-In (Friday 26 September).

Should weather conditions either improve or deteriorate following the Bike Check-In, the Contingency Committee will meet at 4:30am on Saturday 27 September and any change to the advertised or revised event format will be announced to athletes commencing at 5.00am and then every 5-minutes until 6.30am when Transition closes.

The Contingency Committee will ensure that they provide a duty of care to all athletes, staff, volunteers and spectators with the well-being of individuals being of the highest importance. Extreme weather may be defined as weather that threatens the immediate or long-term of individuals as a result of rain, lightning, wind or heat. The risk to individual well-being is IRONMAN’s foremost responsibility and have identified reducing heat injury in sport in forecasted conditions a main priority. The Contingency Committee will make their decision should conditions such as, but not limited to, any of the following be either forecast or prevail:

 Extreme Temperature

 Extreme Weather Conditions

The Contingency Committee may consider implementing one or more of the following strategies if deemed necessary in the interests of competitor safety:

Shorten the distance of one or more of the legs (swim, bike, run).

Start the event earlier or later.

Deletion of a leg to allow for a Duathlon (extreme

cold or dangerous water) or Aquathlon (extreme heat).

 Cancel the event.

The following information presents a number of scenarios that may be implemented should circumstances dictate.

CONTINGENCY SWIM COURSEThe Contingency Committee may choose one of the following options:

1. If the conditions are not considered life threatening, delay the scheduled event start for no more than 1-hour and reassess conditions at that time.

2. If the conditions are not considered life threatening, the swim will be reduced as required.

3. If the conditions are considered life threatening, cancel the swim and replace it with a run, thus turning the event into a Duathlon.
