Ateneo is derived from Athens, the ancient seat of learning. Naga comes from the word narra or Philippine mahogany. Naga City, a center of religion, culture, educa-

tion, and economics, is popularly known as the “Maogmang Lugar.”

Ateneo de Naga University is one of the eleven schools in the Philippines run by the members of the Philippine Province of the Society of Jesus. The main campus is located northwest of the Metropoli-tan Cathedral, in the barangay of Bagumbayan Sur in Naga City. In SY 2003- 2004, the high school transferred to a new campus in Pacol, now known as Bonoan Campus, located at the slopes of Mt. Isarog, seven kilometers away from the main cam-pus. The other Jesuit schools in the Philippines are found in Manila, Cagayan de Oro, Davao, Zambo-anga, Bukidnon, Cebu, San Juan, Nuvali, Iloilo and Culion.

Msgr. Pedro P. Santos, 31st prelate and first Archbishop of Caceres, invited Fr. John Hurley, S.J., then the Superior of the Philippine Jesuit Mis-sions, to build a Jesuit school for boys in Naga. On 2 May 1940, Ateneo de Naga was founded with Francis D. Burns, S.J., as its director, aided by six Jesuits.

Classes formally started in June 1940 at the building formerly used by the Camarines Sur Cath-olic Academy (now Naga Parochial School) with 650 elementary and high school students. Mean-while, Msgr. Santos initiated the construction of the Jesuit faculty house and the Ateneo school building with the now well-known four pillars. These build-ings were intended to be turned over to the Jesu-its on 15 December 1941. However, this plan was thwarted when the Pacific war broke out.

When the Japanese came to Naga, the Ateneo was taken by the Japanese army and became a lo-cal “torture chamber.” But as soon as Philippine In-dependence was declared in 1946, the high school department of the Ateneo resumed classes with Fr. Burns as Director.

On 1 June 1946, full recognition as a standard four-year high school was granted by the Depart-ment of Education to Ateneo de Naga. On 5 June 1947, a college for men was opened with 87 stu-dents. Ateneo conferred its first academic degrees in April 1950. On 26 October 1953, the Ateneo Col-lege Department became co-educational when five women were granted admission into the College.

In the fifties and sixties, new constructions were added to those built before the war. In 1955, the gymnasium-auditorium, a silent witness to many important gatherings, was completed. In 1961, the Archbishop Santos Hall was dedicated to the Ate-neo’s founder and Naga’s first Archbishop. In 1968, Burns Hall was inaugurated as a monument to the memory of Ateneo de Naga’s first rector. In the

By 1979, the 1940 Articles of Incorpora-tion were amended and a new Code of By-Laws was adopted, transferring the Ateneo de Naga’s highest policy making body from the five Jesuit consultors of the Naga Jesu-it Community, to a fifteen member Board of Trustees. While the Provincial appoints the Superior of the Jesuit Community, the Board of Trustees elects the President of the Uni-versity.

Religious & Ignatian FormationDAILY EXAMEN, RETREATS & RECOLLECTIONSIn the tradition common among Jesuit schools following the spirituality of St. Ignatius of Loyola, stu-dents do a daily conscience examination, join 2 to 3-day retreats and 1 day class recollections to pray and reflect. In the process, students examine and process their experiences, deepen their knowledge of themselves and their relationship with God.

SOCIAL INVOLVEMENT PROGRAMStudents engage themselves in social action as they do immersion and exposure activities in deppressed rural and urban communities. Eventually, students initiate self-sustaining programs to help these communities. In the lower grade levels, students visit orphanages and homes for the aged.

EXTENSIVE HOMEROOM & GUIDANCE PROGRAMIn the spirit of cura personalis (personal care) in Jesuit education, homeroom moderators and guidance counselors help hand-in-hand in the personal and social development of students. This entails companionship in the growth of students in all aspects where they need help - counseling, career awareness, group dynamics, etc.

STUDENT LEADERSHIP PROGRAMIn the Formation Program of the school, students are given opportunities to hone their leadership skills. This comes in various modules and ways.

For more than 20 years, the Ateneo de Naga Junior High School has been main-taining academic, cultural, and scholar-ship ties with two Japanese schools. In 1997, Hiroshima Gakuin and the Ateneo started the Mutual Exchange Program from the initiative of the late Fr. Raul Bonoan S.J. For less than two weeks, Japanese high school students visit Naga City in August to immerse in Phil-ippine culture and experience Ateneo ed-ucational system. The Ateneans do the same in April at they travel to Hiroshima City. The exchange program with Notre Dame Seishin, an exclusive girls school in Hiroshima City started, in 2006. ■

Naga was already an existing

flourishing village along the banks of Naga River when the Spanish colonizers headed by Juan de Salcedo, grandson of Miguel Lopez de Legazpi, arrived in 1573. Two years after, Ciudad de Caceres was established by Pedro de Chavez in honor of Governor General Francisco de Sande, a native of Caceres in Spain. In time, the thriving native community called Naga combined with the Spanish settlement to become Nueva Caceres (New Caceres). In 1595, Nueva Caceres became the seat of bishopric erected by a papal bull, together with the other three in Manila, Cebu and Nueva Segovia (Ilocos). Thereafter Nueva Caceres remained the capital of Ambos Camarines for many years which later separated into the provinces of Camarines Sur and Camarines Norte. The Americans reduced Nueva Caceres to a municipality and reverted back to its pre-Hispanic name, Naga; until it became an independent component and chartered city in 1948 by virtue of Republic Act No. 305 through the legislative efforts of Rep. Juan Q. Miranda. Today, Naga City is the region’s leading cultural and economic hub.

Lord, teach me to be generous; teach me to serve you as you deserve,

except that of knowing that I do your will.Amen.
