Northeast of Chelyabinsk, on the banks of the river Miassa, a magnif icent view opens up of the largest enter- prise in the USSR and Europe, i .e . , the ChelYabinsk Metal lurgical Works, Building work of the lat ter was started in the grim years of the Great Patriotic War. In March, 1942 the first builders arrived at the building site of the works that were to be and on April 19, 1943, the first e lectr ic furnace of the first e lect r ic s teelmaking shop produced the first melt . In the shortest t ime, under trying conditions during the war. the famous co l lec t ive of builders and m e t a l - workers fulfi l led the resolution of the 18th Communist Party Congress on building new meta l lu rg ica l works in. the

Metallurgy) and other enterprises makes i t possible to improve considerably the quali ty of metal , to reduce

the amount of rejects, and to increase the life of a r t i - cles. Such t rea tment is of part icular interest for steel intended for main pipelines. In 1968, this work was awarded the Lenin Prize.

The engineers at the central works laboratory developed a new ultrasonic inspection method for steel and alloys by checking the ingot surface untreated after forging and roiling. In col laborat ion with the Chelya- binsk NIIM they developed a c rys t a l lo -chemica l method for reprocessing the open-hear th and blas t - furnace slags.

The plant ' s co l lec t ive is constantIy searching for newer and more advanced methods.
