Reactions 598 - 27 Apr 1996 Aspirin + low-dose warfarin led to significantly higher faecal haemoglobin excretion compared with conventional warfarin therapy alone after 1 month of treatment, according to the preliminary findings of a US study. Patients received either warfarin (n = 32), enteric-coated aspirin 325 mg/day + warfarin 1–3 mg/day (31) or aspirin alone (54). The researchers say that these preliminary data raise the possibility that more major clinical gastrointestinal bleeding episodes will occur with warfarin + aspirin, compared to conventional warfarin therapy. The ongoing trial will evaluate whether haemoglobin monitoring will allow prediction of bleeding episodes. Blackshear JL, et al.
