last year! One of our speakers even joined in on the lesson. We had a 60-something year old teacher named Bob. There were little kids zipping by us at first, but by the end of it, a

few of us were going down blues.Favorite food: homemade rice crispy treats

Best semester of dental school for you so far and why: DS2 summer. It finally felt like we were in dental school since we started taking less basic science classes and getting more

dental-specific, but I wasn’t worried about boards yet either.

School: University of Oklahoma College of Dentistry- class of 2015Hometown: Oklahoma City, Oklahoma

Email: [email protected] memorable ASDA experience: One of my most memorable experiences was meeting Kyle Maynard at ASDA Annual Session in 2013. He was such an incredible keynote speaker, and an inspiration to everyone. It was a great way

to start the week and I really enjoyed reading his book “No Excuses”. Favorite Food: Ice Cream and Macaroni and Cheese (not together).

Best semester: Fall semester of third year has been the best so far! We are fi-nally applying all the dentistry we learned in the previous two years, no more

boards to study for, and very little studying. While it comes with its’ own stresses of patient management, I would choose that over classwork any day!

Baylor ASDA hit the ground running this year. At the close of last year, we reworked our leadership structure, altering officer positions and duties to better serve our chapter and student body. Some of the changes include the creation of a

“President elect” role, a public relations chair, and a legislative committee. These changes among others have served us well during our first busy semester. We started of the year with a Back to School Sand volleyball social, fundraisers, and a fall

vendor fair. In media we have created new BCD ASDA logos, revamped our website and social media usage, and produced

the inaugural edition of the “Baylor Bridge,” our chapter newsletter. Our service outreach has included D1 tutorials, a winter clothing drive, and facilitating participation in Texas Mission of Mercy dental care events. Looking into the next

semester, we will be hosting a golf tournament, a second ven-dor fair, and many lunch and learns. We plan on finishing the year strong and we know that the other chapters in our

District will do the same!-Allie Lossing

Message from Chapter PresidentSan Antonio ASDA had a very busy 2013! We increased our outreach into the community, adding several new events such as building with Habitat for Humanity and coordinating with a local free dental clinic. Lunchtime meetings were well-attended and introduced members to

aspects of the dental profession that are easy to forget about as students. We also had great participation in our social events, such as our school’s

chili cook-off (we won “Most Spirited”!). 2014 promises to be just as exciting, with our first ever “GV Black and White Ball”, DentFest, more great outreach and informational sessions, and a brand new cohort of

future dentists.-Sarah McMahanp5

Message from Chapter President-elect

2013 was an exciting year for Colorado ASDA. The chapter amended its bylaws to change the

executive board elections process to an applica-tion-and-appointment cycle, which has resulted

in the most dedicated and involved executive board in recent memory. Of particular note has

been the explosion of our community outreach and pre-dental committees. Community outreach committee chair, Marie de Puey, assembled a delegation of students for the Colorado Mission of Mercy event in Greeley, CO, and held Colorado ASDA’s first-ever community outreach and oral hygiene instruction training. This set the stage the stage for multiple Fifth Gear Kids events pro-viding OHI to elementary school children. Pre-dental committee chair, Ryan Gonzales, brought

back our defunct pre-dental committee and put together meet-and-greets and a “Pre-Dental Day,” where pre-dental students from area colleges came into our simulation clinic to prepare and restore

typodont teeth. She also partnered our ASDA chapter with the school administration to educate students from kindergarten through high school about dentistry as a career path.

We also worked with a graphic designer to develop a new chapter logo, created and launched a chapter Facebook page, and worked with the Dean of Student Life to increase chapter visibility via features in the dental school newsletter. Chapter treasurer, Elise Post, brought our fi-nances into the digital age with a chapter PayPal account, and we compiled a chapter Google Drive to organize historical records and ease the transition of resources from one executive board to the next. These increases in visibility and infrastructure are part of our new emphasis on increasing value to our members, which kicked off early this year with a Class of 2017 Welcome Lunch &

Learn featuring keynote speaker, Dr. Alex Barton, 2012-13 ASDA vice president, and our first-ev-er ASDA New Member Social at Washington Park, which was financed through a Membership

Onboarding Initiative grant. After a successful vendor fair put together by president, Kamran Pi-rastehfar, and a new dodgeball tournament organized by alternate delegate, Kyle Larsen, the future

of Colorado ASDA is looking bright.--Christian Piers, Colorado ’16, Chapter President-elect

Dental Olympics

Message from Chapter PresidentOh, we’re halfway there! It seems like just yesterday I had just started my term as chapter president and district trustee. This

year has been full of new initiatives and programming that I am especially proud of - Dental Olympics, ASDA Rewards, the exclu-sive financial education series with SNB, the continued collabora-tion with Staples Society and StuCo, the strong alliance with the Oklahoma Dental Association and the OU College of Dentistry.

The list goes on and on.What am I most excited about? Seeing and hearing students be-

come fully engaged as ASDA members! Whether it is setting aside a few hours on the weekend to promote oral health or spending

time after school on campus to support your classmates in Dental Jeopardy while enjoying a tasty adult beverage with a faculty

member that you may have never interacted with before – ASDA fever is in full effect!

Our most well received event has been our fall Dental Olympics with a dental Jeopardy theme! Over 97 students and faculty

attended the inaugural event with food provided by the Student Council. Teams of 8 (6 students, 2 faculty) were pitted against

one another with a broad range of categories including celebri-ty smiles, dental history, and NBDE 1 review! The event was not

possible without the collaboration from the UCLA ASDA chapter. I highly encourage all ASDA leaders to connect with other leaders across the nation to learn more about the unique ideas and amaz-

ing events out there!-Daryn Lu

Message from Chapter President

This semester, ASDA has been up to a lot! We’ve had social events, community service events, plenty of lunch & learns, and our first ever golf tournament. Earlier this month, 8 of us traveled to the ASDA National Leadership Conference in Chicago, IL. We had the oppor-tunity to collaborate with ASDA Leaders from all over the country. We also gained person-

al leadership training to better serve our classmates in our respective roles. Hopefully you’ll see some of these skills at

work in the near future.
