WALTER HNATYSH SURVEY: THE FLORIDA YEARS 1989-2016SCHMIDT CENTER GALLERY: September 2 – October 22, 2016Opening: Thursday, September 1, 6:30 pm

This survey exhibition presents the work of former FAU Professor of Painting Walter Hnatysh. With works ranging from painting to drawing to photography, Walter Hnatysh Survey: The Florida Years 1989-2016 serves to both demonstrate and celebrate Hnatysh’s evolution as an artist over the last 27 years. Hnatysh’s primarily figurative work reveals sometimes fantastic, sometimes surreal worlds that are nothing if not idiosyncratic visions containing highly evocative, overtly playful, creepy, mysterious and sometimes quirky imagery.

A.E. BACKUS AND FLORIDA’S HIGHWAYMEN: HISTORY, COMMERCE AND ARTRITTER ART GALLERY: September 16 – November 19, 2016Opening: Thursday, September 15, 6:30 pm Public Programs to be announced

A.E. Backus and Florida’s Highwaymen: History, Commerce and Art brings to the public new scholarly insights into the work of “Bean” Backus, Florida’s preeminent landscape painter, and the Highwaymen, 26 African-American artists, influenced to varying degrees by Backus. The project centers on an exhibition of selected Backus works from the collection of Florida Atlantic University combined with other Backus works and an approximately equal number of Highwaymen paintings on loan from private collectors. Three College of Arts and Letters faculty members Arlene Fradkin (Anthropology), Brian McConnell (Visual Arts and Art History), and Evan Bennett (History) have collaborated with outside scholars Gary Monroe (Daytona State College) and Michael D. Harris (Emory University) on the development of the exhibition. Public lectures and gallery talks by Florida-based humanities scholars will inform visitors of the social, historical and political milieu of these artists. A panel discussion among several contemporary African-American visual artists will critically examine and offer fresh perspectives on the content, stylistic renderings and aesthetics of these paintings. The project is made possible in part by a grant from the Florida Humanities Council and other outside contributors.

FLORIDA DREAMINGSCHMIDT CENTER GALLERY: November 5, 2016 – January 21, 2017Opening: Friday, November 4, 6:30 pm

For centuries, southern Florida was considered by Europeans to be an inaccessible Eden, a place where Ponce de León died searching for gold. Despite attempts by a few hardy settlers, South Florida’s explosive growth occurred only after World War II. Florida Dreaming is a group exhibition, organized by guest curator Erica Ando, that looks at the dreams (and their obstacles) that have compelled people to make South Florida their home. The exhibition features contemporary, multi-generational artists who have lived or worked in South Florida. Parsing the intersections of real estate development, climate change and immigration, the exhibition contemplates the past, present and future of this complex place of dreams.

walls turned sideways are bridges: narratives of necessity RITTER ART GALLERY: January 20 – March 4, 2017Opening: Thursday, January 19, 6:30 pm

Curated by william cordova, an interdisciplinary cultural practitioner, and María Elena Ortiz, Assistant Curator at the Pérez Art Museum Miami, this exhibition focuses on the evolution and coalition building of youth radical community activist movements that became prominent in the late 1960s and early 1970, through organizations such as the Black Panther Party, The Young Lords, American Indian Movement, I Wor Kuen, Brown Berets, Dalit Panthers and Tupamaros, among others which exemplify the people’s vanguard for social change. Presenting an extensive collection of underground newspapers, magazines, photographs, audio, films and other documents of these community activist organizations, walls turned sideways are bridges: narratives of necessity illuminates this phenomenon that eventually led to both national and global societal changes in areas of state and local policies, healthcare, law, education, land-rights and housing. The exhibition furthers our understanding of these organizations and their long-term social impact.

THE DIARY OF ANNE FRANK BY FRANCIS GOODRICH AND ALBERT HACKETT; ADAPTED BY WENDY KESSELMAN STUDIO ONE THEATRE In a new adaptation that the New York Times and New York Post called “undeniably moving” and “an extraordinary theatrical adventure” this powerful fresh version of the familiar story rises to new levels of authenticity. It tells a deeper story that has restored the terror and shatters the heart. THE SPITFIRE GRILL BY JAMES VALCQ AND FRED ALLEYSTUDIO ONE THEATRE This extraordinarily beautiful and intimate musical which the New York Times called “soul satisfying” celebrates the generosity of the human spirit. When Percy, a feisty parolee, arrives in the small town of Gilead, she gets a job at the Spitfire Grill, meets the local residents, and charms them all so thoroughly that she revitalizes the town’s soul and restores hope to its people. The “Spitfire Grill” has what critics have hailed as “instantly infectious melodies” with music that is “freeing” and that “glows.”

Tickets $20, University Theatre, FAU Boca Raton

“Not In My Town” is the story of the events surrounding the 1998 murder of Matthew Shepard, the gay Wyoming college student who was beaten and left tied to a fence to die. The murder brought national and international attention to hate crime legislation. As a result, Congress passed the Matthew Shepard and James Byrd Jr. Hate Crimes Prevention Act. Opera Fusion is a nonprofit artist-driven company of professional South Florida singers. Executive Director Birgit Fioravante said, “This work has everything a new ‘opera’ should have – great music, great drama, and a riveting story. The tonal palate is somewhere between grand opera and musical theater... It has the potential to move people much in the same way ‘West Side Story’ first did in its day.” The World Premiere will be the culmination of FAU’s International Week of Peace 2016, a series of peace-related lectures and events starting on the United Nations Day of Peace on Wednesday, Sept. 21, 2016.
