ABOUT THE AUTHOR

My name is Saket Bolisetty. I am in 10th Grade. I go to a special

school called The Calais School in Whippany, NJ. I live in Randolph,

NJ. I wrote this book because I love art and music. In my spare

time, I love to travel and visit art museums and college campuses.

ABOUT THIS BOOK

Nine year old girl Sarah teaches people about the different kinds

of art and the different kinds of music. She teaches people about

when the style/genre began, where it was made, and who started

it. The tool that was used to create the book was markers. Here is

a summary about each character.

CUBISM

Cubism is an art style that began between 1907 and 1911.

It began in Paris.

By a couple of Cubism artists.

Cubism means breaking things down into shapes.

Here, Sarah did a portrait of herself in Picasso’s style.

IMPRESSIONISM

Impressionism is an art style that began in 1874.

It began in Paris, France by a couple of Impressionism artists.

Impressionism means painting what you see in the outdoors.

Here, Sarah went outside and took all of her art stuff and painted a lily

pad that was lying on the grass.

EXPRESSIONISM

Expressionism is an art style that began in the 20th century.

It began in various cities across Germany.

By someone named Paul Hindemith.

Expressionism means painting things from their feelings.

Here, Sarah did a portrait of herself based off of

“The Scream” by Edvard Munch.

POP ART

Pop Art is an art style that began in the 1950’s.

It began in Britain by a couple of Pop Art artists.

Pop Art means taking everyday objects and turning them into works of

art.

Here, Sarah did a portrait of herself crying and thinking of Campbell’s

Soup Cans based off of Andy Warhol and Roy Lichtenstein.

SURREALISM

Surrealism is an art style that began in the early 1920’s.

It began in France.

By Andre Breton.

Surrealists painted stuff from their dreams.

Here, Sarah did a portrait of herself from one of her dreams she had one

night and based it off of “The Persistence of Memory” by Salvador Dali.

RENAISSANCE ART

Renaissance Art is an art style that began in the 13th century.

It began in Italy.

By a couple of Renaissance Art artists.

Here, Sarah did a portrait of herself based on “The Mona Lisa” and called

it “The Mona Sarah”.

ABSTRACT EXPRESSIONISM

Abstract Expressionism is an art style that began in the 1940’s.

It began in New York by a couple of Abstract Expressionism artists.

Here, Sarah went to her living room and did an Abstract Expressionism

painting based off of Jackson Pollock.

BLUES

Blues is a music genre that started in the 19th century.

It began in the Southern USA.

By North American Slaves that were originally from West Africa.

Here, Sarah dropped her ice cream at lunch time at school and she sang

“The No Ice Cream Blues”.

CLASSICAL

Classical Music is a music genre that began around the 11th century.

It began in Europe.

It was by Europeans.

Here, Sarah imagined herself playing the cello at a Classical Music

concert.

Hip Hop is a music genre that began in the 1970’s.

It began in the Bronx in New York City.

Here, Sarah went to a Hip Hop gig and did a rap song with her big

brother, Fred.

Rock Music is a music genre that began between the 1940’s and 1950’s

It began in cities all over the USA.

By people who mixed Blues, Jazz, and Country musicians together.

Here, Sarah imagined herself as a famous rock star on stage with a bunch

of fans cheering for her.

COUNTRY

Country Music is a music genre that began in the late 1800’s.

It began in the Southern USA.

By North American Slaves that were originally from West Africa.

Here, Sarah went to the Wild West and was using a lasso to grab a banjo

to play it.

Reggae Music is a music genre that began in the late 1960’s.

It began in Jamaica.

It was by Jamaicans.

Here, Sarah went to a Reggae festival and got to play the drum for

everybody.

Jazz is a music genre that started between 1895 and 1917.

It began in New Orleans.

By North American Slaves, Originally from West Africa.

Here, Sarah had a dream one night of her in the city playing jazz music at

night.

Salsa is a music genre that began in the 1960’s.

It began in New York City.

By North American Immigrants from Cuba and Puerto Rico.

Here, Sarah went to a Salsa festival in New York and her best friend

Chuck asked Sarah if she would like to dance with him.
