ADVANCED DRAWING

ART 4320C.01

University of Central Florida – Fall 2013

Day/Time: Tues / Thurs 11:30 AM – 2:15 PM, VAB 210

Instructor: Kevin Haran, Associate Professor, [email protected]

Office: VAB 210A, Tues, 2:30-3:30 PM; Thurs, 2:30-4:00 PM

ART4320C – Advanced Drawing will explore advanced concepts and techniques of

drawing. Class drawings will deal with observation of the human figure, skeleton, self-

portrait, and still life. Homework will emphasize developing more personal “series”

drawings of observed or imagined subjects. Part of the course will require drawing

from the nude model. NO PHOTOGRAPHY OF THE MODEL IS PERMITTED.

Attendance: Attendance to all classes is mandatory: students are expected to attend all

classes. The student will be counted absent if you do not work during class time or not

having your art supplies. Missed classes will affect your grade. Five absences will result

in the grade of "F". Arriving late or leaving early without valid reason (such as illness or

emergency) will affect your grade. USE OF HEADPHONES, CELL PHONES, AND

OTHER ELECTRONIC/COMMUNICATION DEVICES IS NOT PERMITTED

DURING CLASS PERIOD.

Homework: Plan to spend time outside of class on your drawings. (Minimum 7 hours

per week.)

Grading: The judge of how well you have mastered the issues of this class is your

instructor. We will use the + and – grading system. Your work will be evaluated by your

instructor through weekly critiques, midterm and final portfolios.

DRAWING PHILOSOPHY

-Our drawing classes are founded on descriptive drawing. The shared reference for both

student and teacher is the motif/subject, which serves as a topic for dialogue and

response.

-We seek to encourage a marriage of design (formal strategies) and descriptive inquiry

with emotional intuitive responses.

-We believe growth of an artist is dependent on persistence of effort over time, i.e.

passion with patience.

-We are biased toward a structural understanding of form as opposed to a purely tonal or

photographic understanding.

-We believe that study of the history of drawing is useful for contemporary artists.

Traditions can evolve but mainstreams persist. The shock of the old is as valid as the

shock of the new.
