The Nakusp Falcons had a great weekend. On Friday night, Nakusp Minor hockey put a float in the “Light Up Parade” which most play-ers rode along on or walked beside. They took home the first place ribbon.

The Falcons Atoms team hosted Boundary to a Saturday noon hour game which they were bound and determined to win so they can head into the Christmas break with a 5 and 5 record. They seemed to have no problem in doing so. The fi-nal score was 9-3 for Nakusp, with seven of those goals be-ing scored by Dakota Fizzard and the other two by Evan Fehler and Thomas Steen-holff.

On Saturday, the Fal-cons played host to the Castlegar Jr. Rebels. The first period saw end to end, fast paced hockey but both goalies would not allow any pucks in. Castlegar went up 2-0 early in the second peri-od and the score remained 2-0 at the break.

During the break, our newest hockey players the Jr. Falcons, had their hock-ey debut. They played a 10 minute game and the score was a tie at the buzzer. Fol-

lowing the initiation game, the netting was raised and Nakusp Minor Hockey spec-tators participated in the sec-ond annual Teddy Bear/Toy Toss. All toys were donated to the Nakusp Community Services Holiday Hamper Program.

After the long break, both teams hit the ice to finish the second half of the game. Castlegar lead 3-0 ear-ly in the third period. Devon Coates got the Falcons on the scoreboard at the 15 minute mark of the third, unassisted, but the Rebels matched that right up. The Falcons would not give up and the coach decided to shuffle the lines up a bit to get something happening. Winger Aidan Hascarl won a battle in the corner, came up with the

puck and put his first ever career goal in the net. Coates would follow that right up with his second of the game. With only one minute left in the game, Falcons pulled the

goalie and put a sixth attack-er on the ice to try and tie the game. Falcons could not put the puck in the net and the game remained 4-3 for the Rebels.

Two Nakusp Secondary School students and their fathers found themselves seated in the stands for Grey Cup held in Vancouver on November 30. Cameron Mackintosh and Tim Bari-soff were selected from all of the NSS students based on teacher recommendations by the principal, Natasha Miles.

The boys and their fa-thers, local business owner Coleman Mackintosh and NSS staff member Ken Bari-soff left Nakusp Saturday to catch their 37-minute flight from Kelowna to Vancou-ver. The entire weekend was sponsored by the BC Lions, who partnered with the Ministry of Education and Pacific Northwest LNG.

On Sunday the four-some attended the Grey Cup, featuring the Calgary Stam-peders against the Hamil-ton Tiger-Cats. The boys got to head onto the field for the halftime show with

pop group Imagine Dragons. Cameron said, “That was my best memory of the week-end. They’re my favourite band.” Tim agreed, “It was a great time, there were lots of kids from all over the place.”

He is referring to the large group of participants who attended the summit on Monday. Students attended different sessions throughout the day, falling into two main categories: Information about finding work in the trades and discussions around anti-bul-lying and violence against women. WorkBC’s ‘Find Your Fit’ held great interest for the boys. It is a workshop which allows students to try out ten of the different trades in hands-on situations. It was held on Monday at the Rich-mond Olympic Oval Centre.

Cameron said, “I really liked learning some of the skills at the oval the next day, like welding.” He thinks he might be interested in a ca-reer in computer program-ming, but Tim is looking at carpentry or auto mechan-ics.

Ken Barisoff said, “The fun items were great, but as a teacher I found it really nice to have a new perspective on motivational techniques to-wards some important issues from the next day. The two main topics were the trades Find Your Fit, like a youth trade fair. They had really neat approaches to showing the kids what the trades are about.” He also spoke about receiving a profound mes-sage concerning antibullying and violence against women. “To see the football players advocating kindness and

stopping violence, consider-ing the sport is pretty violet. They are there striving to create a society without bul-lying and without violence. They had a really good mes-sage.”

After their two full days and three nights away, the group got up at 4:30 a.m. on Tuesday to get their plane back to Kelowna and were back at school on Wednes-day.

“We were happy to be selected and gratefully ac-cepted the opportunity,” concludes Ken.

The Nakusp Sec-ondary Band was also featured on the pro-gram bill, but had a last minute brush with potential disaster when band conductor Patrick MacGibbon unfortu-nately fell ill prior to the event. Van der Pol, determined to include young musicians in the evenings lineup, made a last minute and “very gentle call” to Marilyn Massey, who, after hear-ing the situation, im-mediately volunteered to conduct the group through their five song set list. MacGibbon’s charismatic contribu-tion to the carol sing was dearly missed, however, thanks to the skilled guidance of Massey his band was

able to carry on. “And look how

well they did with-out him,” Van der Pol teased.

The Annual Christmas Carol Sing is made possible through the efforts of members of the Rotary Club of Nakusp, choral vol-unteers and assistance from School District 10, Overweightea and the Arrow Lakes Fine Arts Guild. Local Rota-ry president, Bill Tobey, was invited to speak and shared with the audience his favourite words of the Christ-mas holidays: Peace on Earth, and good will to-wards men.

“These words can be said in any language and in any culture,” To-bey explained. “They can be said in any re-

ligion and we can all understand what they mean.”

The Nakusp Ro-tary club works in col-laboration with other member clubs to pro-mote the very spirit of peace on earth through a variety of programs

and initiatives. One such program is In-ternational Youth Ex-change, and Tobey took the opportunity to introduce Nakusp’s next outbound student, Claire Yaremchuk, who will participate in the two-year program.

Yaremchuk was joined centre stage by current inbound youth exchange Nakusp Sec-ondary student, Patri-cio Morfin, and helped lead the audience through the delightful-ly international carol, “Feliz Navidad.”

Seeing as it’s cookie… I mean, Christ-mas season, I thought I would share a couple of my favourite recipes that have been a hit amongst my friends and cookie exchange goers alike. I try and make these as gi s every year for my neighbours and friends but they tend to disappear before I can get them out the door. I feel these reci-pes should come with a warning!

Christmas Crack (Warning: Highly Addictive)

Ingredients:•Cooking spray•35 to 40 saltine crackers•1 cup butter•1 cup light brown sugar•8 ounces semisweet chocolate chips (about 1 1/3 cups)

Directions:Preheat the oven to 425 F.Line a large baking sheet with alumi-num foil, spray with nonstick spray and arrange the saltines salt-side down in a single layer. In a medium saucepan, melt

the butter and brown sugar together and boil until it turns a caramel color, a few minutes. Remove from heat and pour over the crackers, covering them evenly.Put the pan into the oven and bake for three to ve minutes, or until just bub-bly, watching carefully. Remove from the oven and pour the chocolate chips over the crackers. When the chips melt a bit, spread them over the crackers with a knife.

Transfer the pan to the freezer for 15 to 20 minutes, or until completely cold. ey will form one big sheet. Break up into pieces. Store in an airtight container.

Bailey’s Irish Cream Truf es

No quick xEveryone is gearing up for the Christmas

season, that wonderful time of year focused on giving. ere are food drives collecting for the food bank, and campaigns of all kinds to help those in need, including toy drives trying to ensure all children have something waiting for them under the Christmas tree.

is is a great thing, and it is good-heart-ed people that both organize and contribute to them. But the best they can hope for, and it is a good goal, is to alleviate some of the need.

e sad fact is, the issue of child pover-ty is not going to be solved by a once-a-year campaign.

According to the annual report released by First Call, a coalition of advocacy groups, child poverty is on the rise in B.C. rather than declining. e B.C. Child Poverty Report Card says 153,000 children were living below the poverty line in this province in 2012.

Last year, the report said 169,240 chil-dren.

First Call set out 19 recommendations in their report with a goal of reducing the pro-vincial child poverty rate to seven per cent by 2020.

e recommendations cover a range, from raising the minimum wage to increased child tax bene ts and rescinding cuts to Em-ployment Insurance. But what they all have in common is the need for provincial and feder-al governments to address the problem.

Back in 1989 — yes, 25 years ago — all political parties in the House of Commons collectively vowed to end child poverty in a decade.

We’re still waiting. And, obviously, it’s not an easy solution to come by, but when we see the enormity of the problem of child poverty, it is clear it is time for upper levels of govern-ment to join in the ght to make some long-term change.

We can’t wait another 25 years.

December 12, 1924Three motorcar loads of dancers went from Sil-verton to New Denver Friday evening to attend the dance put on by the Knights of Pythias. Excel-lent music was supplied by Mrs. A. MacAulay at the piano, Boke Hoegerwerf on the saxophone, Alex Trickett on the drums, and Mr. Jewett playing the violin. The snowstorm that night brought down telephone, telegraph and electrical wires, but just as the dancers were about to light the gasoline lamps, the power was restored.

December 14, 1934 A large and apprecia-tive audience enjoyed the three-act drama “A Southern Cinderella,” presented in Needles by the Needles-Fauquier Women’s Institute. Miss. Eleanor Hallbauer, who

also played the role of the proud old Southern lady in a most convinc-ing manner, directed the play. Miss Ivy Walker, as the beautiful heiress, was at once a decorative and pathetic note. Many of the audience claimed to have shed tears over her harsh treatment by the wicked sister, Miss. Katherine Hawk and Miss Caroline Hawk, played by Mrs. Lund and Miss Sadie Det-ta respectively. Others in play were Mrs. R.R. Clare as the social worker, Miss Eda Boetger, the vivacious Southern beauty and Mrs. C. Rollins as the Mammy Judy Johnson.

“It was great. It’s nice to see all these people out. it’s better than past years,” Elaine Lindsay said during the annual Festival of Lights held December 5. This year instead of the parade heading west down Broadway it traveled east. Rev-ellers were also able to enjoy Christmas carol singing, a night mar-ket, food vendors, a chili cook off and two dance performances including the Myth-maker fire dancers from the Slocan Valley.

Festival attendee Chantal Broughton said, “It’s better to have it downtown with all the businesses open.” This is the first year that the stalls and en-tertainment have been set up on Broadway; in past years it has been held at the gazebo park on Eighth Ave.

“This is the best we’ve ever had. I would love to see it expand-ed even further down

Broadway next year,” Mayor Karen Ham-ling. She estimated the crowd to be more than 400 people.

Several hundred people descended on the courthouse block of Broadway—cir-culating through the stores, open later than usual for the Moon-light Madness event— singing carols under the lamplight and keeping warm around supervised burn barrels specially decorated for the occasion. Christ-mas music was piped in from an excellent sound system set up on the patio of the Broadway Deli, inside which lo-cal photographer Deb Booth was having a wine and cheese meet and greet. Overwaitea was cooking up smok-ies on the grill. Na-kuspians were spoiled for activities, from sampling chili for the cook-off contest ben-efitting the Heart and Stroke Foundation, to buying borscht, mulled wine, hot choc-olate with handmade marshmallows and

fresh popcorn at sev-eral booths either run by local businesses or raising funds and awareness.

Calgarian Daryl

Shanks, who is visiting the area, said, “It’s real-ly nice to see so much Christmas spirit in one small village. They did a great job.”

Seniors’ Column

Many of us enjoy having a drink while socializing, re-laxing and celebrating various special events. However, it’s important to know that as we age, many of us become keenly sensitive to the e ects that alco-hol has on our bodies.

is substance is absorbed and distributed throughout the body’s total water content. With age, we tend to lose lean body mass, resulting in more body fat buildup while less water re-mains in the body to dilute the alcohol, according to represen-tatives of the BC Ministry of Health.

On the other hand, not all seniors are made the same and the end results can vary according to our age and gen-

der, health status and other de-termining factors, all of which need to be taken into account. A primary reason why some older persons begin drinking to excess include the loss of a loved one, lack of meaningful employment, one’s overall poor health or lack of mobility. Any of these factors point to facing life altering changes and wher-ever possible should be attend-ed to without delay.

e Centre for Addictions Research of BC advises that older persons in general who choose to drink would be wise to pay attention to the following suggestions:

• Drink the suggested amount below — fewer than 10 drinks weekly for women and fewer than 15 for men.

• Avoid consuming alcohol when you are also taking med-ications or check with a health professional for further infor-mation and advice.

• Note that a standard drink has 13.6 grams of alco-hol within its contents. In the case of ve ounces of wine, this means 12 per cent alcohol, and with 1.5 ounces of liquor this amounts to 40 per cent alco-hol. Within 1 bottle of beer (12 ounce size), ve per cent alco-hol is present.

If you know of someone who needs help, a variety of options are available on a con -dential basis. Examples include contacting a registered nurse at the Nakusp health unit, a physi-cian or HealthLinkBC. Further information concerning alcohol consumption is available via the Alcohol and Drug Information and Referral Service (free and 24/7). Also, individual and fam-ily support group representatives can supply meeting place details including those in Nakusp and surrounding areas. A toll-free information line is available by calling 1-800-663-1441.

Seniors'column

For one day in De-cember the community bus is parked outside of Overwaitea Foods to drum up additional support for the local food bank during the Christmas season. is year, Ann Miskulin was busy grilling hot dogs to o er those who made a cash or a food donation. e bus was waiting to collect and cart o the extra dona-tions desperately need-ed at this time of year.

Miskulin, is the Food Bank Coordina-tor for Arrow and Slo-can Lakes Community

Services, explained, “Overwaitea is great. ey set everything up for us. All we have to do is bring the bus and have somebody here to man the hotdog stand. at’s it. ey donate the hot dogs, too.”

For Nakusp and area residents going through hard times, the food bank is a valuable resource. During the Christmas season, up to 30 volunteers col-laborate to wrap pres-ents, sort and pack the hampers and check the expiry dates on every-thing.

“Come to our of- ce, you can put some-one’s name on the form

— just make sure that those people will accept it.” Miskulin adds.

Some people might be too proud to receive the charity. Local ham-pers must be picked up in person — deliveries are only done in Edge-wood and Fauquier. As of now, there are no formalities to regulate who gets a Christmas hamper.

“We are not there to say yes or no. If you have your name in, then you get a hamper. As long as they are a resident of the Nakusp area. People donate throughout the year, so the Fill the Bus is main-ly to give something to

those who are able to give today, whether it be food or cash. And to make it a fun event. A big thank you to the people of Nakusp who donate — Overwaitea, the stores. Everybody’s been great,” Miskulin stated.

e food bank op-erates year-round with access to free food ev-ery Friday between 10 a.m. and noon. e program is designed to assist each house-hold once a month for a pickup and all items are prepackaged into hampers for singles and families. Call (250) 265-3674 ext 213 for more information.
