Just 25 miles north of St. Louis on the banks of the Mississippi River, Alton is accessible from six major interstates, an international airport and an Amtrak station. Our region encompasses a number of historic and charming communities, including: Alton, Elsah, Godfrey, Grafton, Hartford and Jerseyville — each filled with rare finds and distinct attractions.

Alton is located on a portion of the Great River Road designated as the Meeting of the Great Rivers National Scenic Byway, where the Mighty Mississippi River converges with both the Illinois and Missouri rivers. The byway is known for its historic qualities, recreation and miles of scenic beauty during every season of the year. Your group will enjoy mile after magnificent mile of historic sites, state-of-the-art museums, shopping, dining, riverboat cruises, casino gaming, antiquing and watchable wildlife.

In the destinations section, you will find information on all of the history and heritage sites, entertainment, guided tours, seasonal tours, as well as some unique attractions. The lodging pages offer information on area hotels accommodating groups. Finally, there are a variety of itineraries listed for each season of the year.

The itineraries listed in this guide are simply samples to give you an idea of the various tours we have available for groups. Each of the tours can easily be adjusted for daytrips and extended for longer getaways.

The Pioneer Room explores the history of Alton from the Lewis & Clark expedition to the Civil War with exhibits on Elijah Lovejoy, the Lincoln-Douglas Debates and the “Alton Route” on the Underground Railroad. Job in 1903. The mansion is named for resident Edmond Beall, who served as an alderman, four-time Mayor of Alton, Senator, industrialist and financier. Designed by world renowned architect Lucas Pfeiffenberger, this three story 9,100 square foot mansion serves as a working museum of the life of the turn-of-the-century rich and powerful in Alton. The museum has more than 20 interactive displays focusing on one of our most precious resources – water. Learn about the cycles of the river, nature, barge traffic, water consumption and much more. Melvin Price Locks & DamSee the best view of Alton and the Mississippi River from eight stories in the air atop the Locks & Dam. As one of the largest locks on the Mississippi River, it is central to river traffic for soybeans, corn, grain, asphalt and other commodities that are transported via the river. Take a guided tour and see towboats and barges as they push their way through this incredible structure. Group tours are offered daily by reservation only at 9 a.m., 11 a.m. and 2 p.m. for groups of 12 or more.Time Allowance: 30 - 45 minutesCost: Free

As the largest state park in Illinois, visitors enjoy hiking, biking, fishing, horseback riding and scenic drives. The centerpiece of the park is the massive lodge and cabins. Built in the 1930s, the lodge has a distinct flavor of native stone and rustic timbers. The most prominent feature of the lodge is the 700-ton fireplace in the Great Room Lobby along with the life-size chess board and pieces. Elegant dining services are available for breakfast, lunch and dinner. The lodge is famous in the area for their family-style fried chicken or catfish dinner.

The Pere Marquette Visitor’s Center is located at the entrance of Pere Marquette State Park. The Visitor’s Center has several displays telling the story of the famous explorers Father Jacques Marquette and Louis Joliet. Visitors can also learn about the evolution of the Illinois and Mississippi Rivers. The campus and its buildings are a masterpiece of breathtaking scenery and architectural beauty. In 1930, the land for Principia College was purchased and San Francisco architect Bernard Ralph Maybeck was commissioned to design the master plan for the college campus. Maybeck convinced college administrators that his English Village design would “express the spirit of home, or peace, and of absolute harmony with [its] physical surroundings.” On April 19, 1993, Principia College was granted National Historic Landmark status by the U.S. Department of Interior. The chapel is named for Monticello’s founder, Benjamin Godfrey. As National Trail Site #1 on the Lewis & Clark Trail, this museum tells the Illinois side of the Lewis & Clark journey. It was here in Illinois that the Corps of Discovery spent five months preparing for the journey. It was here in Illinois the common men became soldiers embarking on a military expedition. It was here in Illinois on May 14, 1804, that journey westward began. Experience Lewis & Clark like never before with five exhibit rooms, the film “At Journey’s Edge” (20 minutes), 55-foot full scale “cutaway” keelboat and replica of the Camp River Dubois.

Along with the Cheney Mansion the Complex includes the Lone Star School, McAdams Log Cabin and the Union Forest Church. There is also a Genealogy Research Center and Museum. Highlights on Historic Alton Tours:Piasa BirdThe dragon-like beast that decorates the river’s bluffs today was first discovered and recorded by Father Jacques Marquette in 1673 during his exploration of the mighty Mississippi.

Elijah LovejoyThe first shots of the Civil War rang out here in Alton as abolitionist and publisher Elijah Lovejoy was murdered and his printing press thrown into the river because of his anti-slavery views. The Lovejoy Monument is the tallest monument in the state of Illinois.

Alton PrisonBuilt in 1833, Alton houses Illinois’ first state penitentiary. During the Civil War, the facility imprisoned thousands of Confederate soldiers. Only partial walls from the structure remain today.

Confederate Cemetery and MonumentBecause of deplorable conditions, more than 1,354 soldiers died at the Confederate Prison. The soldiers are laid to rest here and each of their names is commemorated on the memorial plaques.

Lincoln-Douglas DebateThe final debate of Stephan A. Douglas and Abraham Lincoln for the senatorial seat took place in front of Alton’s City Hall on October 15, 1858. Life-like statues of the two statesmen keep the famous series of debates in 1858 frozen forever in time.

Robert Wadlow StatueBorn at an average weight of eight pounds in 1918, Alton’s “Gentle Giant” Robert Wadlow suffered from a pituitary gland problem that led to his incredible height. He died at the age of 22 reaching 8 ft. 11.1 inches tall. Today, he still remains the World’s Tallest Man.

This one-acre garden has been recognized as one of the best rose gardens in the St. Louis area with 125 varieties of roses and nearly 1600 rose bushes. Underground Railroad ToursJ.E. Robinson Underground Railroad Tours(618) 462-5590Buried beneath the streets of Alton, the footsteps of runaway slaves escaping to their freedom can be heard along the Alton Route of the Underground Railroad. Because of the area’s neighboring slave state of Missouri, runaways found refuge in the free land surrounding Alton. The area was a major stop along the Underground Railroad, hiding slaves in caves, barns and basements throughout Alton, Otterville and Jerseyville. Village of Elsah ToursElsah.orgThe entire village of Elsah was the first community in its entirety to be placed on the National Register of Historic Places. If you’ve never been, it truly is a charming village right out of the 1800s. It very much like a small town in New England nestled right here between the bluffs along the Great River Road. Eagle Extravaganza

Eagle watching has become a favorite winter activity for groups as hundreds of American Bald Eagles migrate through the region and reclaim their nests along the Meeting of the Great Rivers National Scenic Byway. On average, groups that spend the day eagle watching will see a minimum of 30 eagles and as many as 150 during the peak of the season. This tour includes a trip through the new Audubon Center at Riverlands for the latest counts on the migrating birds in the region. Architectural Adventures

If your groups enjoy history and architecture, then they will love this tour! Architects Theodore Link and Bernard Ralph Maybeck left their mark in the Alton region with a number of spectacular structures. Nestled between the towering bluffs of the Mississippi River, just off the Meeting of the Great Rivers National Scenic Byway is where you’ll find the Village of Elsah. An experienced guide will lead your group though this historic village. Your tour will continue high upon the bluffs at Principia College, a masterpiece of breathtaking scenery and architectural beauty. The college was designed by renowned architect Maybeck in 1930, and the campus is patterned after an English village.

On day two of the tour, your group will travel the streets of Alton where they will learn of its rich history and architectural styles. Link, best known for his design of Union Station in St. Louis, Mo., also designed the Hayner Genealogy & Local History Library and the First Presbyterian Church in Alton.

Autumn Adventures… Thrills & Chills

Check in at one of Alton’s hotels and then join your step-on guide for a trip through “one of the most haunted small towns in America.” Your group will experience the thrills and chills of visiting the haunted side of Alton with a visit to scary sites such as the Confederate Prison and the McPike Mansion. Finally, have dinner at one of Alton’s many group-friendly restaurants. Then get some rest because the next day starts early!

Take a drive along the Meeting of the Great Rivers National Scenic Byway to the Brussels Ferry for some fabulous fall colors. Pick up a guide who will ride along on your journey through Calhoun County. Check out the Barn Quilts along the way and stop by one of the many roadside stands for fresh produce, jellies and jams. Then make your way to Pere Marquette State Park. With nearly 8,000 acres of scenic beauty, Pere Marquette State Park is one of the most picturesque locations on the Illinois River and the largest state park in Illinois. While there, have lunch at Pere Marquette Lodge where a staff member will welcome your group and tell the story of the park, the lodge and the paranormal activities there. Next, stop in Grafton to taste award-winning wines or to pick your favorite type of apple at Eckert’s Orchards.

River Connections...

See what happens when the great rivers converge with great moments in history all around Alton. At 2,320 miles long and almost four football fields wide, the river flows right up to the door of the National Great Rivers Museum. Stand eye-level with the river as barges push through the locks as your group tours the Melvin Price Locks & Dam. The river meets history with your stop at the Lewis & Clark Interpretive Center. Lewis and Clark chose this spot, in full view of the river, to begin their journey westward. Then your group will enjoy dinner at one of the oldest family-owned restaurants and sleep comfortably as they stay overnight at one of Alton’s hotels.

Oil has always run in Wood River’s veins since the opening of Standard Oil’s first oil refinery in 1906. See how oil is refined today with a tour of Phillips 66 Wood River Refinery and the Wood River Refinery History Museum. Then see what the refinery looks like from 150 feet high at the Lewis & Clark Confluence Tower. You’ll also be able to see the view of the confluence of the Missouri and Mississippi rivers. Have lunch before you cross the Clark Bridge into West Alton for a visit to the new Audubon Center at Riverlands. Pelicans, swans, geese, heron, egrets and more! Migrating waterfowls are abundant along the Mississippi Flyway.

of life on the Mississippi and then take a guided tour of the Melvin Price Locks & Dam, one of the largest lock structures on the river.
