Questions and discussion.

Jen GR, D24 had a question about pg. 4 Section 5. Jayme says this is part of our election procedures and that we aren’t here to debate the By-Laws.

Casey GR, D27 had a motion to dispense with reading By-Laws and go to vote. Seconded by Debra GR, D20, Liz GR, D75. This motion was taken off the table.

Liz GR, D75 moved to make a motion and the motion was: (1) read everything [1 vote]; (2) read yellow only [92 votes]; or (3) no reading [116], so the results were to not read the By-Laws.

Vote yes or not whether we accept the approval of By-Laws : (1) Yes [170]; (2) No [27], (3) Abstain [20]. Voting to accept By-Laws as they are written passed.

More discussion and comments - from Liz GR, D24 – are we voting to say yes on Election Procedures plus numbers 6 & 7? Answer is yes.

Regarding going to hat after 3rd vote - Alan GR, D27 sug-gests we have a fourth ballot after the two delegate candi-dates and then go to hat. Sandie E., Past Delegate, says Task Force came up with this policy to make it more efficient. We could add it but it isn’t usually necessary. Suggests we take it under advisement for next year. Alan asks for consideration for 4th ballot before going to hat.

Adriana GR, D54, – clarifying if it is a yes or no vote for entire By-Laws. Answer is if a no vote goes through, we go back to what we were using.

Barbara GR, D3. How can we get “going to the hat” changed when we get down to two delegate candidates? As answered above, a Task Force recommended this policy, which is in the Service Manual .

Brenda GR, D12 Clarification about “going to hat” – It was suggested to contact the Task Force who worked on this.

Tracey GR – read No. 6 page 8 article 8. There is an error. Jayme says that the error has nothing to do with the Election

CB read from daily reader ODAT.

WSO Presentation

Participants on GoToMeeting Conference Call: Vali F. – WSO Executive Director; Marsha W. – WSO Director of Programs; Sue P. – WSO Associate Director – Groups; Sergio Z. – WSO Alateen Assistant; Marcia M.– SCWS Alternate Delegate; Jerry (Bear) W. SCWS Area Alateen Process (AAPP )

Sue P. discusses how we (Alateen) got here. WSO is the clear-ing house and provides the Historical Prospective.

Sergio talks about concerns of abuse in Alateen which gave rise to the 2003 Minimum Safety and Behavioral Require-ments Motion. Sergio reads requirements. Every area has developed their own requirements. If you are interested in reading the history about this, the 2003 Conference Summary along with all of the Conference Summaries are available on the WSO Member Website.

Reminder that during discussions to use spiritual principles – Unity, presume good will, trust, acceptance, unconditional love, responsibility, accountability, service, obedience to the unenforceable, etc.

Some Clarifications/Concerns

Question regarding Areas being given their autonomy to write their own guidelines. Answer: Correct. However, our guidelines have to meet or surpass the WSO Guidelines.

Question referring to Concept 12 about being punitive. Isn’t this punitive? How can we educate Alateens on the principles of Al-Anon? Answer: if we go through back-ground on how the Board made this decision, it is apparent this is not punitive.

Concern that we have not reviewed our safety requirements since they have been established and could have avoided incidences if we had reviewed the requirements.

Bear and Marcia read timeline that starts July 26 (See Restor-ing Confidence flyer.)

Vali comments this is a lot of information. The decision to de-activate and not register the two groups was a reflection of the Area Safety and Behavioral Requirements (ASBRs) not being carried out. In order for WSO to empower the areas to support Alateen they need to know that the ASBRs are being implemented and adhered to – which they were not in their entirety. Today’s conversation is to make the Assembly aware of the problems and to determine a process for cor-recting the problems and restoring the WSOs confidence enough that they will approve new Alateen registrations.

Open Mic/Some Questions and Comments from Assembly

Which of the Districts are covered under California South? Answer: all of them. Only two Coordinator positions are in the SCWS area including L.A. so how would training for AMI-AS’s be judged as sufficient? Answer: This is why we are asking for a Task Force.

One District has very few AMIAS and two Alateen meetings. Requests that the unit that oversees those meetings not be the District but be a broader area. Bear says we are aware of this and will look at it.

Is there a deadline for when the Safety and Behavioral Requirements (ASBRs) to be implemented by the Area? An-swer: It was 2004. The ASBRs were completed in SCWS in 2004. Has the Area ever had to step in before? Yes.

Bear says he thinks there have been issues for a while and that the communication loop between meetings, DALs, DRs, and the Area all need to be linked more closely in the future.

There are Alateens supporting Alateen who don’t have a voice. Meetings need to be protected. Voting against com-pliance to the ASBRs is not helping.

DRs need to be a part of process. DALs are hard to find. DRs may not be so willing to volunteer.

One member said that if this had happened in his Dis-trict, he would just start another meeting. Answer: We don’t want this to happen again. We are looking at the big picture. New Alateen meetings are not being registered at this time so starting a new meeting will not happen until the WSO reinstates the Area’s permission to register new Alateen meetings.

SCWS Website—scws-al-anon.org Southern California World Service Area Bulletin—November 18, 2017

Wants to make sure all Alateens are safe.

One member has nine kids in Alateen. “The program saved our lives.”

Marcia says on the list of our ideas, we have pages of thoughts on how to manage drop offs of Alateens before meetings and suggestions about procedures we could put in place. Encourages groups, Districts, and individuals to send their personal thoughts and suggestions to their DRs, DALs, and the Area.

Always room for improvement but too much paperwork.

Why weren’t we informed earlier? Are we scaring Alateens away? Fear and control will destroy Alateen.

We are all at fault and we all need to come together. We need trust. Can there be a timeline on Task Force or ARC updates? Marcia says we have already started changing what we can. This is a “we” program. Communication will be ongoing. Remember we are turning over a new Board. A lot of work to be done.

Very sad about Alateens. First Alateen meeting in his

District is waiting to open.

Al-Anon is a process. Believes in Board and we need to let them do it. It’s hard for us to keep out of controlling.

What can we do as GRs? What is our power? Vali says talk to each other and reason things out. Close the break-downs in communication in the links of service. Plan on pa-per looks wonderful but it wasn’t implemented.

We are the largest area in SCWS. We have larger prob-lems. Suggest we have two sponsors per meeting. We need education. Make sure that there is an Al-Anon meeting alongside each Alateen meeting and that the Al-Anon meeting helps the Alateen meeting.

We have the same purpose. Fight ignorance. We are the problem. Not just one person. Communication and working together is the key to success.

There are huge potential liability issues with Alateens. What is the ratio of AMIAS’ to SCAC members who attend SCAC? Answer: 10 (Alateens) to 1 (AMIAS).

Training. Recertification. Alateens are invited to partici-pate in many conventions. There has to be an Event Plan for each one. There are 76 registered Alateen meetings and everyone needs at least one AMIAS sponsor. We have only two SCAC Coordinators. This is so complex we need to break it down. We need many people involved. Keep wrapping your head around how any AMIASs we have to have.

We are working toward a vote of confidence.

Jayme clarifies that the letter from the WSO was sent to the Pastor of the First United Methodist Church of Torrance, Delegate, Area Chair, Area Alateen Sponsor Coordinator and

The Alateen Resolution Committee (ARC) has been fo-cused on SCAC and not Alateen meetings for the past few years. The ARC has been meeting on a weekly basis. There has been so much focus on SCAC and the Area’s anxiety about SCAC that there has been no focus on anything else.

One member who has been involved as a past Alateen sponsor believes we can find solutions. Substitutes should be available for late or absent sponsors.

At a conference, an Alateen member came to an Al-Anon Member and let her know her meeting shut down because there were no sponsors.

Member feels like he is being scolded by Area and just wants an apology. Tripling of AMIAS roster is probably not going to happen soon, and is dependent on participation from Al-Anon members.

GR would “not be alive” without Alateen. Please simplify the Event Plan. Be consistent. Lack of communication. Re Task Forces – please make Alateens a part of the process.

DR asks if the WSO provided a list of what we need to do in order to be approved. Do we have a good idea of what the WSO wants and are we asking for unity with the Assembly. Where can he find the minimum security guidelines? Sergio says Alateen safety guidelines are online on WSO website.

One member suggested that maybe this needs to be a group responsibility. Maybe one person doing Alateen com-pliance, splitting responsibility as suggested.

Suggestion to isolate certain areas and don’t penalize those who are doing well.

One member thought it was not necessary to bring up problematic incidences from the past. Alateens are waiting for us to figure it out.

Disappointed that we are all being punished for some-thing someone else did. Suggests Alateens be split into older/younger Alateens. Vali responds to first comment. Action tak-en was because of many of the procedures Southern California put in place (the ASBRs) were not being followed. Implemen-tation needs to be the backbone of the ASBRs. The Area needs to establish effective channels of communication. Offic-ers and Coordinators have been doing a lot of hard work that our members don’t see. Let’s empower a group to work on these issues so we know what to do during a fire drill.

Al-Anon and Alateen are one. It is us – no one above or

below.

Safety is foremost. WSO has the legal authority to grant the use of, or withhold, the Alateen name and registration process. Really doesn’t like to hear that we have to “restore confidence.” In the past Alateens got together and met. Bear says what we are looking at a consensus from the group in order to restore confidence.

Alateens don’t have a voice? Every Alateen can be a GR!

Area Alateen Process Person.

Clarification that if we vote to form an Alateen-AMIAS Task Force (AATF), Alateen meetings will again be registered by the WSO.

Issue is to strengthen existing Alateen meetings. Suggests that AMIAS’ should be on Task Force.

Would love to see training modules.

Who chooses the Task Force members? Answer: The cur-rent Chair, in consultation with the other elected Officers.

Marcia reiterates some procedures can start immediately, whereas others may take more time to implement. We have a target of May, 2018.

Not passing this motion means Alateens can’t register new

meetings.

Realistically, this needs to be done by February. Vali says we just want to know progress is being made by SCWS. Vali says we provided some suggestions about who we thought should be included on the AATF. The final decision is up to the Area.

CB reads paragraph from Sue P., November 17, 2017, regard-ing suggestions of Task Force (Vali says this is only a sugges-tion): “The Area is responsible for the Safety and Behavioral Requirements and Guidelines for Alateen. These requirements must meet or exceed the minimum requirements as set forth in the 2003 Alateen Motion from the Board of Trustees. The Area is autonomous in making these decisions. It is important to remember that Al-Anon is responsible for Alateen. The Alateen Safety Guidelines refer to the importance of following local laws which contribute to the formation of the Safety and Behavioral Requirements. These laws are made by adults for all to follow. The role of the Alateen is to cooperate and abide by established requirements. With that in mind, participation of an Alateen on this Task Force is not recommended. I would expect that discussion can occur in the Alateen meetings so their voices are reflected through the AMIAS and GRs that serve them.”

Motion from Joyce GR, D69, seconded by Alan GR, D9: “Motion to form a new Alateen-AMIAS Task Force that will formulate immediate changes to implement in our AMIAS (& DAL) train-ing modules, improve communication between the Area, Dis-tricts, and AMIAS’s and to review/recommend possible up-dates for our 2013 Area Alateen Safety and Behavioral Re-quirements by May, 2018 Assembly.” Voting results: (1) Yes 170; (2) No 4; (3) Abstain 1.

Vali asks about final vote? Overwhelming yes. Vali says thank you. (They then discontinue the conference call.)

Assembly Dialogue with WSO Staff plus Alateen Presentation & Restoring Confidence

During the Assembly afternoon session we had a joint presen-tation between members of our SCWS area and WSO staff members. We connected with WSO through a web-based conference call. We were able to see/hear Vali Fayen (WSO Executive Director), Marsha W. (WSO Director of Programs), Sue P. (WSO Associate Director-Groups) and Sergio Z. (WSO Alateen Assistant). Marcia (Alternate Delegate) and Bear (Area Alateen Process Person, AAPP) gave background information regarding the reason for this special joint presentation.

The SCWS Officers started inquiring in August to see if Sue P. could give the Alateen presentation she gave in Tennessee to our Assembly. This presentation included Alateen history and information about the original 2003 Alateen Safety and Behav-ioral Requirements Motion that came from the Board of Trus-tees of Al-Anon Family Group Headquarters, Inc. In the mean-time, Alateen meeting issues arose in our Area, making it even more relevant to have Sue’s presentation at our Assembly.

Sue P. and Sergio Z. first presented a brief history of Alateen, and the Alateen Safety and Behavioral Requirements Motion of 2003. Following that, Bear and Marcia reviewed the recent events which led to 2 SCWS Alateen meetings no longer being permitted to use the Alateen name, and the WSO Board of Trustees’ concern that our SCWS Area was not in compliance or following our 2013 California South Area Alateen Safety and Behavioral Requirements. (Please see the attachment “Restoring WSO Confidence in SCWS and our Area’s Use of the Alateen Name”). Due to the potential risk to AMIAS and Alateens, the Board of Trustees put a temporary hold on regis-tering any new Alateen meetings in our Area. At that point in the presentation there was a question/answer period where Assembly members with “Voice” went to the mic to ask ques-tions of the WSO staff or SCWS Board. Many of the questions/comments were asking for clarity about the training of AMIAS/DRs/DALs, previous Alateen issues, why did the communica-tion breakdown occur, feelings of disconnect and lack of trust. (For more specifics please see the Assembly Minutes).

At the end of the question/answer section the Assembly was asked for a vote of confidence to proceed with the necessary changes to ensure the safety of our Al-Anon and Alateen

present for District 57. After the Assembly was over, I was approached by a Coordinator from the Southern California World Service Board. He asked me to consider assisting others to help District 57 become a viable District again. That was all I needed. You wanted me to help! My father’s words came back to me: “If you are going to do it, do it right or don’t do it at all.” Well, it was a huge effort but a joint effort and together we managed to put District 57 back on the map! Yes, it took courage and lots of footwork, but it gave me such a deep respect for the process and for all the help that was provided. Al-Anon tells us we never have to do anything alone.

Service gives me many opportunities to work on my charac-ter defects. It requires me to grow in ways I never knew possible. It has challenged me to learn new things especial-ly in the world of technology. Most of all it has made me realize that it is not about my opinion or about defending my right to be right. It is about listening to the minority voice and not being afraid of it. The most important thing is to support the group conscience even when we don’t agree. We agree to disagree. It has challenged and forced me to apply the Traditions and Concepts in all my actions and emails too! Those spiritual principles will keep Al-Anon alive and the Traditions and Concepts will hold us together.

It was not my idea to stand for Area Chair in 2009, but a Past Delegate told me to stand. He said “you can do it”. Me? Area Chair? Again, I took direction and stood never believing I would be elected. It was an exciting time and I thought it was the pinnacle of serving the fellowship.

When I was elected Delegate, I had a past Delegate tell me to remember one thing: “You are not there to change Al-Anon, Al-Anon is there to change you”! I needed to re-member that from time to time especially when I was re-sponding to emails, listening on phone calls to reason things out with one another. We aren’t here to change Al-Anon, Al-Anon is here to change us! Service is here to change us! I was also told by another Past Delegate that it would change my life. Indeed it has changed my life but more important-ly, it has changed my heart. Service changes your heart.

In 2012 walking into my first World Service Conference I felt like a newcomer again. I was in awe. I knew I didn’t belong. I looked around the room and I knew everyone was much more accomplished than I. What was I doing here? How did this happen for me? Did my Area make a mistake electing me? How would I ever be able to go to the micro-phone and speak? Finally losing my fear of criticism, feeling worthy enough to contribute to the largest group con-science of the Worldwide Fellowship of Al-Anon, I went to the microphone. I felt the love of a Higher Power. I was an equal. There was that connection again. It was truly our “spiritual principles in action”.

Serving as Delegate I was presented with opportunities and challenges daily to demonstrate those spiritual principles. I tried to do this by giving back the love, respect and energy that I feel and see here in our Area. It is about displaying

members. A motion was made to form a new Alateen/AMIAS Task Force that will formulate immediate changes in our AMI-AS & DAL training modules, improve communication between Area, Districts, and AMIAS’, and review/ recommend possible updates for our 2013 Area Alateen Safety and Behavioral Re-quirements. This was followed by discussion resulting in adding a date of our May Assembly, 2018 as a time to for the Task Force to report back to the Assembly. After amending the mo-tion, a vote was take to proceed with the Alateen/AMIAS Task Force.

Marcia M., Alternate Delegate

Immediate Past Delegate

Immediate Past Delegate, Final Report

It has been a privilege and an honor to serve the fellowship in the capacities that I have. My sponsor told me to just be will-ing to follow direction and “to get in the car”. I have been “getting in the car” since day one.

On page 2 of “When I Got Busy I Got Better” it states: “Service and recovery, are not independent of each other. Both are part of the spiritual awakening that continues to guide us. The more willing we become to practice all of this program, the more progress we can make in recovering from the effects of another’s alcoholism and in living our lives more fully”.

I walked into my first Al-Anon meeting 38 years ago rigid, re-sponsible and right. I looked like I had it all together but inside alcoholism had robbed me of my self-worth and self-esteem. My life was in shambles and I had stopped believing there was any way out.

My three children felt like a noose around my neck. I was so preoccupied with the drinking I was unaware that my five year old had lost 80% of her hearing in one ear. It took a kindergar-ten teacher to tell me there was something wrong with my daughter’s hearing!

From that very first meeting I felt a connection, but I did not understand that feeling. I threw myself into service immedi-ately. I wanted to be busy and hoped it would bring relief. Service provided that spiritual connection for me and relieved the pain.

Initially, it was convention work that sparked my interest. In 1998 I served as the Chairman of the AFG Convention. In early 2000 there were rumblings of an Alateen issue that seemed to boiling over at our Assemblies. Since I am a very curious Al-Anon, I decided to get involved. I wanted to see what this “hot topic” was all about. I raised my hand to serve as my group’s World Service Group Representative. And so it began.

In 2000 I attended an Assembly as a Group Representative in District 57. When roll call was taken at the Assembly, I no-ticed that I was the only Group Representative in the room from District 57. The District did not have a District Repre-sentative and there weren’t any other Group Representatives

trust, flexibility, tolerance, accountability, responsibility and unity. It’s about living the spiritual principles and in all areas of my life.

One of my favorite Al-Anon books is Many Voices, One Jour-ney. It is a very good history book for anyone who enjoys read-ing about the very beginning of Al-Anon and where we are today. On page 263, of Many Voices, One Journey it states the following: “At the 1980 A.A. International Convention in New Orleans, she spoke at the Flag Ceremony. The A.A. members, like the Al-Anon members, claimed her for their own. There was a deafening applause when she stood up to speak and the applause was even more thunderous when she completed her talk. I was in the wings, and when she exited the podium, she said to me, “Did I do all right?” The text goes on to say: “no matter how long one is in the program, there are times we all feel like a newcomer. We are strong people; we are fragile people.”

And Lois’s words “did I do all right”? From time to time those words resonate so much for me because from the beginning of serving the fellowship as a Group Representative to the pre-sent as the Immediate Past Delegate, there was always the question from time to time, “did I do all right?” I hope you understand now why those words resonate so much for me.

Love in service, Jayme C. Panel 52, CA(S)

Chair

Thank you for your participation in Assembly today. I will take a minute to refer to today’s page from One Day At Time In Al-Anon. It speaks to the trust we will experience today as the Steps and Traditions are practiced. Group Representatives will vote today for officers 2018-2020 and other agenda items. Throughout Southern California you will bring us together with your voice and vote. We will experience Tradition One: “Our common welfare should come first; personal progress for the greatest number depends upon unity.”

CB, Chair

Secretary

Greetings! Just a gentle reminder that at every Assembly and Committee Meeting, the minutes from the previous meeting will be approved. For example, the February Committee meeting Minutes are approved at the August Committee meeting and vice-versa. Likewise, the Minutes of the Area Assembly in May are approved in November, and vice-versa.

Ask-it-Basket

1. Q The Convention is part of Al-Anon?

A: It depends on what “Convention” you are referring to. The yearly Al-Anon Family Groups (AFG) Convention in Southern California is connected to Southern California World Service.(SCWS) Can you please provide more infor-mation about the convention you are inquiring about?

2. Q: Meetings in our district are seeing court cards. What is SCWS’ policy on court cards?

A: This question has come up frequently in Orange. There have been phone calls from individuals who have received DUIs and were looking specifically for Al-Anon meetings to have their court cards signed off. There have also been reports that individuals have come to Al-Anon meetings with court cards who were intoxicated. The Group is within their autonomy to not sign off on a court card in this in-stance. Our World Service Office was contacted regarding this question, and they replied: “If the court card states that the person must attend Alco-holics Anonymous meetings and they are attending an Al-Anon meeting, with care and kindness it should be ex-plained that they are not in an AA meeting and therefore their court card cannot be signed. This is not meant to de-ter Groups from signing court cards. Court cards, when signed, should always be signed at the end of the meeting. (Some meetings will have their group’s Secretary or Chair-person sign the card, first name only, after the meeting is completed.) We always want to be welcoming. There are judges that send family members to Al-Anon and Alateen meetings and that is wonderful.”

3. Q: Are there plans to bring the So. Cal Convention (AA with Al-Anon participation) back to San Diego every other year as in the past?

A: The Southern Calif. AA Convention Al-Anon Chair was contacted. Her reply: “I know that next year it will be in the desert again because the (San Diego) Town & Country was not very cooperative according to the AA committee. It is really completely up to the AA people but I do know that they are looking at a number of different places for 2019.”

4. Q: Is it true that the district should not do public outreach as it’s double headed management with the local AIS (Al-Anon Information Services)?

A. No, this is not true. The key to this question is commu-nication. It would only be “double headed management” if both the district and AIS were providing public outreach at the same event without communication. Sometimes the

local AIS is contacted first about an upcoming event and the request for Al-Anon public outreach materials, etc. The AIS and districts served by the AIS will determine their process for handling requests. For example, in San Diego, after the AIS office receives a request, they contact the district that the event is located in. (It’s easier to find volunteers for an event within the same district.) If for some reason the dis-trict cannot cover the event they communicate this to the AIS, then the AIS will be responsible for the event. For fur-ther information please see the Al-Anon Guidelines, G-15, District Meetings. Under “What happens at a district meeting?” it lists “Coordinating service and public outreach

projects”. Under “Sample District Meeting Agenda”it de-

tails “Committee reports: • Public Outreach • Alateen• Literature. In addition, please read the Al-Anon Guidelines, G-4 Al-Anon Information Services (AIS). Under “What Ser-vices Does an AIS Provide to the Groups it Serves?” it in-cludes “Channels local Alateen and Public Outreach inquiries

to a local AIS or district committee.” and in the section “How Does the AIS Collaborate and Communicate with Local Groups, Districts, and the Area?” you will find: “When AIS committees are formed, they work in coopera-tion with the district/Area coordinator or the correspond-

ing Area committee.”

5. Q: There was an error on the Election Process form that was handed out and was brought to the attention of the whole Assembly. It was put to a vote and passed. How could this be put to a vote knowing that there was an error?

A: The error on the Election Procedures form was regarding an incorrect reference. Number 7 on the form stated the following: “7. One Candidate In the event there is only one candidate for a position, there will be a yes or no vote. (Reference: SCWS Bylaws, Article VIII). “

The reference to the Bylaws was incorrectly stated and should not have been included in number 7 on the Election Procedures. This incorrect reference was brought up during the Bylaw Presentation by a member. The Immediate Past Delegate thanked the member for their correction and stat-ed that we had just used the new Election Procedures for the election which was just held and the incorrect reference was a moot point. The Bylaw reference will be deleted on the Election Procedures.

6. Q: At the Area Longtimers event on Oct 21, two of the longtimers on the Fourth Step Panel talked about using the AA Big Book with their sponsees for the Fourth Step Invento-ry. The Area Delegate went to the mic and stated that we can use whatever resources we want at home, but in meetings we refer only to Al-Anon Conference Approved Literature. One of the longtimers on that Panel stated, “the very first Service Manual told us to use the Big Book since we did not have our own Al-Anon literature. I never heard this before. Is it true?

A: We sent the question to the World Service Office for some fact checking.

Greetings from your World Service Office (WSO)! We appre-

ciate your email regarding use of the Big Book of Alco-holics Anonymous and reference to its use in the Al-Anon/Alateen Service Manual.

Although Al-Anon’s roots are based in A.A., the A.A. Big Book is not and never has been Al-Anon Conference Approved Literature (CAL). In the very early days of Al-Anon, A.A. materials were used at meetings because we had little material of our own. When our cofounder, Lois W., wrote The Al-Anon Family Groups (B-5) in 1955, with the help of other pioneers and the support of her husband Bill, she intended it as our big book. Bill did not have Lois write any part of the A.A. big book—even the chapters to the wives or the family—because his book was from the perspective and experience of alco-holics. There was a time back in the 1950’s that reprints of the chapters, “To Wives” and “The Family Afterward” were offered to Al-Anon members on the literature or-der form

Al-Anon and Alateen Groups at Work was initially pub-lished in 1964, the World Service Handbook in 1973 and the Digest of Al-Anon and Alateen Policies in 1975. There is no reference to use of the Big Book in Al-Anon meetings.

“Conference Approved Literature” (CAL) came about from discussions held at Al-Anon’s very first World Ser-vice Conference in 1961. The first few Conferences de-veloped a process to give conceptual approval for the development of Al-Anon literature, and it was the will of the Conference to recommend exclusive use of CAL in Al-Anon meetings. Although the Conference grandfa-thered in several existing Al-Anon pieces, in keeping with Traditions One, Three, Five, and Six, the A.A. Big Book was not among them. The World Service Confer-ence has never voted to approve the use of A.A,’s Big Book as Al-Anon CAL. Additional information about the history of CAL is published in the book Many Voices, One Journey (B-31).

CAL is developed by and for Al-Anon members and un-dergoes a rigorous process of review. This process en-courages Al-Anon unity and assures that the Al-Anon message at our meetings is consistent with Al-Anon principles and policies. The 2014-2017 Al-Anon/Alateen Service Manual (P24/27) provides detailed information about CAL on pages 102-108 and the policy regarding the exclusive use of CAL at meetings is stated on pages 104 of the “Digest of Al-Anon and Alateen Policies” sec-tion of the Service Manual.

As part of their personal recovery, Al-Anon members are always free to read any materials they choose out-side of an Al-Anon meeting. Many find reading A.A. materials helpful in understanding the disease of alco-holism as it affects alcoholics and the Big Book is the authority on alcoholism from the perspective and expe-rience of the alcoholic. It does not reflect the perspec-tive or experience of the families and friends of alcohol-

ics. At Al-Anon meetings we strive to understand the dis-ease of alcoholism as it affects us and since meeting time is so limited, it is important to stick with Al-Anon materials during meetings.

Alateen Conference Restructuring Workgroup:

The Area Alateen Resolution Committee (AARC) completed the SCAC Procedures document.

They were ready to present at the Feb 2018 Committee meeting, however, were asked to hold their presentation until after the newly formed Area Alateen Task Force has presented their recommendations to the May 2018 Assembly. The sus-pension will remain in place until the restructuring document is presented to and approved by the Area GRs at the Area As-sembly.

Alateen Task Force:

At the May 2013 Assembly, the GRs voted to have a task force created to discuss the following and report back to the Assem-bly with their recommendations:

Should the maximum age of 20 for Alateen members be changed?

How can the Area support meetings that have Alateen members with special needs?

What safety measures need to be put in place in order for the Area to support overnight Alateen events?

Nine (9) AMIASs were selected to be on this task force. The nine members are current or past Alateen Group Sponsors, have experience with Alateen Events, and represent different regions of CA(S). They met in September and October 2017 but the Task Force was put on hold in November 2017. This Task Force was informed in January 2018 that the newly formed Alateen Task Force formed, per WSO’s request, will be covering these topics so this Task force was disbanded.

Background Check Task Force:

Information pertaining to Live Scan was presented at the Feb-ruary 2017 AWSC meeting with a consensus of moving for-ward with Live Scan. Discussion was held at the August 2017 AWSC meeting regarding the financial and logistical impact on the Area, Districts, and AMIASs. Discussion ensued as follows:

1) Who should be financially responsible for the cost of Live Scan? The consensus was that the Area should not be bur-

dened with the entire cost. It should be shared with the District and/or AMIAS. More discussion will follow at the February 2018 AWSC.

2) Should current AMIASs be required to complete the Live Scan process or should we just move forward with new AMIAS appli-cants? Unanimous decision was that all AMIASs (current and future) complete the Live Scan process.

3) Who should pay the Live Scan fee for AMIASs that certify after their original certification has lapsed? Since time ran out, no poll was taken but comments received were (1) District & AMIAS (2) AMIAS only. More discussion will follow at the February 2018 AWSC.

Once discussion is completed at the AWSC, the Area Assembly members will discuss and vote on whether or not to convert to Live Scan.

AMIAS Recertification Workshops:

The AMIAS Recertification Workshops and Certificate Training schedule has been created and is posted on the Alateen Spon-sorship webpage of the Area website. The Recertification Work-shops will be held between January 27, 2018 and May 26, 2018 and include the information that WSO requested be included.

SCWS Alateen Event Plan Form:

Based on input from Area members, the form has been revised for clarity and simplicity.

The draft will be reviewed by the incoming Alateen Event Coor-dinator, who will distribute it and have it posted on the website.

Alateen Participation at Conventions:

It is important to include Alateen participation when planning a convention. If an Alateen member is unable or unwilling to step up as the chair, an AMIAS can do so. Reminder that the proce-dure for Alateen Events must be followed.

An Event Plan must be submitted to the Alateen Sponsor Coordi-nator at [email protected] and approved before pub-lishing “Alateen Participation” on the convention flyer or distrib-uting a flyer for the Alateen event. You can submit the Event Plan months in advance of the event. You do not need to wait until the deadline of “30 days before the event”.

If there is no Alateen program at the convention, the Conven-tion is responsible for the safety of all of the Al-Anon members. You may want to consider a disclaimer that minors should be supervised by an adult at all times.

Dear Friends in the Fellowship,

If you love History this is the right positon for you. I have learned so much about how Southern California has been in-strumental with Al-Anon and its beginning.

In 1957 the very first Alateen Meeting was formed in Pasade-

na, California. Again in 1957 the very first Men’s Meeting was established in La Canada/ Flintridge. At the 1960 AA Interna-tional Convention held in Long Beach the Al-Anon members in attendance voted to create the WSO. This is our service arm and also represents our World Service Office in Virginia Beach, Virginia today. So a lot has happened here and it has been great fun to share this information with our Fellowship.

The Traveling Archives was always made available to our AFG Convention and the Southern California AA Convention with Al-Anon Participation. It is made available to all District Alathon functions as requested and seen at all Assembly, Area Com-mittee , SOS and TEAM Meetings.

Although, today most all of our information is recorded on the SCWS Website, a bound paper version is wonderful to have so one can see and touch the original document.

In October we had our Longtimers Meeting. It was an honor to get to do this for our Fellowship. It is so wonderful to meet many of our Longtime Members and hear their Experience, Strength and Hope! It was a wonderful day enjoyed by all.

So with this I will sign off. As WSO Archives always states, “Look to the Past to Preserve the Future”.

With Love in Service, Dan P SCWS Archives Coordinator

#1: Area Group Data

#2: Our on-line Registration/Group Records Change Form

Our members appear to be using the form and the process is working smoothly.

#3A: Conference Call with WSO Staff

Our Delegate and I participated in a conference call about Group Records on October 5 with two WSO staff members. They are discussing the possibility of revising their group rec-ords process so that members can fill out a “universal form” on the WSO website. They’re exploring the possibility of making that THE one and only place to update group records. The Are-as and the AIS Offices around the country would direct their members to that form, rather than to our SCWS form. There are many steps between now and then, but if that were to happen, our service arms would be able to refer to that one database for all information about every registered meeting.

#3B: Texting the Contacts for meetings

It is suggested that each meeting have one or two phone Con-tacts—members who are willing to receive calls from prospec-tive members who have questions about the meeting, prior to

attending it.

Our WSO is getting reports from prospective members that many of the Contacts don’t pick up calls when the caller’s phone number is not in their area code, or if they don’t recog-nize the number. (This is happening because so many people get marketing calls on their phones, and they block or ignore calls from numbers that are not already in their Contacts list.) So prospective members are not getting through to the Con-tacts.

The WSO is exploring the possibility of requesting that the meeting Contacts be willing to receive texts from prospective members, if/when their mobile phones are the Contact num-bers. There are many steps between considering this idea and actually creating the procedures for our members to do that, but it’s one of the considerations for making our meetings more accessible to prospective members, in this age of mobile phones.

Starting now, a phone Contact can create an outgoing message (such as, “If you are calling about meeting information, please text me”) which lets prospective members know how to reach the Contact about his/her meeting.

The WSO is interested in feedback from our members about this issue.

Finally, as this is the last report I will be doing as your Group Records Coordinator, I want to take this opportunity to thank each and every member with whom I’ve interacted in the past 3 years. I’ve appreciated that you have taken the time to up-date the information for your groups so that prospective mem-bers will be able to find and attend your meetings. Please con-tinue to use the SCWS form so that we keep our meeting infor-mation up to date! And thank you for your service to your groups!

Love in Service, Donna E. SCWS Group Records Coordinator

Literature

To all my fellow California South Al-Anon Members!

Service has been a favorite part of my journey as I hope it has been for you. From the meeting level of literature chair, coffeemaker, ash tray cleaner, secretary and treasurer to my first service beyond position as an Intergroup Rep. I found the steps/traditions/concepts worked. Then to the local district as a GR where I accepted roles in Public Outreach, Archives, Newsletter, Alt DR and then DR. After DR I accepted roles as Archives, Bulletin and finally Literature Coordinator. Every sin-gle service commitment built off the one before and it allowed me the gift of giving back. All I needed to do was suit up/show up/ and be of service. Please raise your hand.

Covina is my home base. It is where members asked me to be of service early on in my recovery. It is where I continue to serve from and where members still ask me for help in service. I am proud to be a member of the Covina guys and gals. My first Assembly was in Long Beach and I still remember the amazement I felt at all the members joining in a day of service. The meeting left that location and moved to downtown Fuller-ton. Glendale is our meeting place today. You are of service.

As Literature Coordinator these last 3 years, I have LOVED the opportunity to talk about Literature. I have shared handouts,

given info in emails and looked to generate enthusiasm for “CAL Literature” and most important- “Sharing your Story”, at assemblies and workshops. Our recovery is strong in Califor-nia south. Consider giving back through this writing service at the: “al-anon.org/members” site. The worldwide fellowship of AL-Anon needs your voice. Please share.

We have a number of Central Office Literature Centers who sell CAL at Assemblies, and at the SOS & TEAM events. Thank you to the Inland Empire, LA., OC & Spanish Intergroups. They were able to bring Literature to see, pick up and talk about in person. Our SCAAC convention literature com-mittees have also partnered with their host city or the Inland Empire Service office to have a fabulous spread for Al-Anon and AA members to see and purchase. Teamwork is vital in carrying the CAL message.

Rotation of leadership is now in front of me. I am feeling the pull of “Not Yet”. Yet I know other members like me will be called to service. One will want to carry the literature com-mitment for the next 3 years, maybe more than one. Trust your abilities. In Canada, the Literature Coordinator has all the literature. They sell it and house it. The position has been held for 15 and 9 years respectively. Ours is only 3 years be-cause our area has so many meetings and levels of service! Whoever accepts this position, know you can call on me to help in any way for workshops, carrying the message at con-ventions or forwarding messages online or at meetings.

Thank you for being part of my recovery all these years, Kathy G/Literature Coordinator 2015-17-Calif. South

Cooperating with the Professional Commu-nity

As your SCWS Coordinator for Cooperating with the Profes-sional Community, I am so excited by the response to “bringing public outreach to the members” through our in-formative, interactive, and fun workshops. Billy M., SCWS Institutions Coordinator, and I have co-hosted Public Out-reach workshops with District 66, the Inland Empire Service Center, and Districts 17-21-27 in the last 3 months. We are currently working on 2 more and have sent out flyers offering additional Public Outreach workshops in 2018. I have also had the opportunity to speak at District and Intergroup meetings.

There is a wealth of member experience in Public Outreach as shared by our speakers and attendees. Connections for outreach work were made between members and even dis-tricts. We have introduced a “Public Outreach Project” form which includes all the components needed to bring an idea into reality. As a result, we are hearing about projects fund-ed with plans for sustainability. Even those new to outreach have started carrying the message. The teamwork, the en-thusiasm, and the support throughout the Area will help us to continue to grow in fulfilling our primary purpose of carrying the message to those still suffering.

I would also like to extend my sincere gratitude to all those mentioned in the Institutions Coordinator’s report, along with Billy himself for his steadying support and his dedication to and knowledge of institutions work. As Lois said, “It takes only one person to start something, but many others to carry it out.” (Many Voices, One Journey, pg. 3, copyright 2011, by Al-Anon Family Group Headquarters, Inc.)

I have been invited to several community resource meetings at the Department of Child and Family Services in Torrance. This is a public outreach opportunity to provide information on the Al-Anon and Alateen program to 30 community-based organi-zations. I am scheduled to make a formal presentation to the professionals in February. I was joined this month by District 54’s Alternate Delegate Sandy K., and Gary K. who shared their enthusiasm in providing Al-Anon/Alateen information tables for 3 resource days for social workers and families in 2018. I hope to broaden contact throughout So. California to include other locations and connect them with local Al-Anon districts to sustain contact.

I attended the First Annual No. Cal Outreach Day on Oct 14 2017 to see how we might reach out to professionals in our Area. They had a professional panel, workshops by their CPC and Diversity Coordinators, technology training, Alateen Meetings, and Alateen Speakers. They used a mobile app for their program and workshop details. Judy P, SCWS Hospitality Coordinator, was also able to attend so we able to observe all of workshops.

The 2018 Al-Anon Faces Alcoholism must be ordered before February 7, 2018 for shipping on April 1, 2018. April is National Alcoholism Month and our AFAs provide tremendous infor-mation to prospective members and the professional commu-nity in English and in Spanish for as low as 35 cents a copy. Think abundantly when it comes to carrying our message of help and hope.

WSO will be conducting the 2018 Membership Survey this Jan-uary and February. This triennial survey provides professionals with evidence-based information about Al-Anon. This can en-courage and increase professional referrals to our program. The survey is conferenced-approved, anonymous and confiden-tial in English and Spanish. Watch for additional announce-ments and please encourage survey participation in all our meetings.

We changed our ATT AIS phone number to a GoogleVoice phone number, which is a free service, and saved approximate-ly $120.00 a month. Instead of getting an answering machine, most of our callers get a member answering the phone.

We are celebrating the end of our 2nd year providing a Month-ly Open Al-Anon Speaker and Birthday meeting for our fellow-ship. This has been very successful and well attended. We have a steering committee that rotates most of their positions each year. We have a few members that are past committee mem-bers that stay on the steering committee to provide experience and continuity.

We have a new and improved District Website.

We have tabled 3 or more local events for Public Outreach each year. These local organizations refer people to Al-Anon.

We have 4 AMIAS certified and are planning on coordinating an Alateen meeting in 2018 by partnering with Behavioral Health Department County of San Luis Obispo.

We are in our 3rd year of providing a Bulk Literature Sales ser-vice for our district meeting groups. This allows groups to pur-chase literature for their meetings at a reduced cost per book.

We used KBDM to lower our district ample reserve to $1000.00 following the 7th tradition.

In 2018, we will be providing free, district sponsored work-shops. We have a small steering committee that will come up with the process. The steering committee in 2019 will be a ro-tation of leadership model with the past chair staying on the committee to provide experience and continuity.

We also had a lot of fun, we learned more about KBDM and the Traditions, the importance of the minority voice, shared group problems and solutions, and provided a safe environment for our district members.

It has been an honor to be of service as our District Rep the last 3 years. I look forward to mentoring our new District Rep, Alle-gra S. in January. ,

D8 has been dealing with the Thomas Fire this December. Sev-eral meetings and events were canceled due to evacuation areas and air quality. Looking forward to the New Year and getting back to our regular routine. Our hearts and prayers are with our members who were affected by the fire.

In October, we had an extremely successful SBAA Convention with Al Anon participation. It was held at a new venue and everyone adjusted to the new environment. Our planning committee did an outstanding job cooperating with the AA committee. We look forward to next year’s convention and the new committee that is already forming.

At our District Meetings we have been discussing how to get more of our GRs to attend Assemblies and will continue that discussion in January. We have more to learn about register-ing GRs so they are eligible to vote.

Our former DR has stepped up to be our Outreach Coordinator beginning in January. Our Speaker Meeting Coordinator will be working with her, and we are very excited to have them head up outreach this coming year. Much love and gratitude to the outgoing Outreach Coordinator who did a wonderful job!!

We are in much need of new officers and volun-teers for the upcoming 3 year terms of service, as my term has ended. We do not have a new District representative yet, but we will be meeting in January and hopefully all positions will be filled at that time. Please pray for our district as we need new people for rotation of leadership and members making commitments are getting harder to find.

I was asked to speak on service at VCAAC, our local conven-tion.

Nancy and I went to longtimers tea in Glendale on 10/21. We enjoyed hearing the different speakers.

At our September district meeting, we created a thought and task force of four individuals as to how to use $600 of litera-ture to give to institutions. This is a district project. It came up at our July district meeting and I cleared it with SCWS.

At last district meeting in November, we voted in our new DR, Nancy W. from Simi Valley. We studied concept 7 during the second hour.

We found out through Billy and Mary that the hospital and institutions conference will be held in Ventura in April 2018.

Thank you everyone for a fabulous 3 years, I've learned so much! Plus, I've made some great lifelong friends as I embark on this new journey. So glad I'm not alone in all of this. Have learned so much!

I am stepping out of service for a few months as I begin chemo and radiation. Hoping to possibly apply for a position on the SCWS board once this is all done :)

District 17, along with Districts 21 and 24 and SCWS Public Outreach Coordinators ,participated in presenting a Work-shop…Now What? Taking Your Al-Anon Program to the Next Level. It was a very informative workshop with wonderful speakers. One of the speakers was a man who spent 35 years in jail and is now out due to going to Al-Anon in jail and working on himself through the Steps. The parole board saw a difference in this man and he was released. We had a nice attendance, about 40 people.

After attending the TEAM event in September, where we discussed Concept Five, I brought to the District meeting the idea of discussing one of the Concepts of Service at each Dis-trict meeting. The GRs were in favor of this addition to our meeting. We started with Concept One this past week and felt the discussion on this Concept was helpful for the GRs.

District 17 is planning a Workshop February 10, 2018 at the Bethel Lutheran Church in Encino from noon to 4 pm. The topic will be Conflict Resolutions: Using Al-Anon Principles to Resolve Conflicts. Donna E. will be the facilitator for this event.

Alateen

There will be a “Meet and Greet” on Tuesday, November 28th for the 24 certified AMIAS’s in District 17 at my home in Chats-worth.

I would like to start additional Alateen meetings in District 17 and am asking Al-Anon groups if they would be interested in starting an Alateen meeting which would be run simultane-ously with their meetings. Of course, they would need an additional room for this purpose.

I would like to form an Alateen committee for Public Outreach regarding this topic and it will be discussed at the Meet and Greet. A workshop may be planned at the SFVAA convention in January 2018 for new AMIAS.

Love in Service, Judy P, DAL

Public Outreach

I am putting together a Public Outreach sub-committee. We plan on meeting every 3 months to update each other on our progress.

An example of how this would work:

One person may be in charge of carrying the message to li-braries, making sure they have our CAL “Al-Anon Faces Alco-holism and our District 17 business cards.

Another person may be doing research on reaching out to Social Workers, Psychologists, and other professionals. We may discuss the possibility of inviting professionals to an Al-Anon meeting to observe. We would specify that they are not to share.

Another person may be researching carrying the message to institutions like prisons and juvenile facilities. Historically SCWS has found it difficult to communicate with these institu-tions, unlike Northern California World Service which has had great success.

One of the GRs in our district has had great success communi-cating with local LAPD in the East Valley. She will be sharing the various events and or visits she has had with them in or-der to further our efforts in the West San Fernando Valley.

We printed 2500 addition “business cards” that we hand out to other Al-Anon members and people throughout the com-munity so they can carry the message as well.

District 21

EAST SIDE OF SAN FERNANDO VALLEY: North Holly-wood, Valley Village, Studio City, Sherman Oaks, Van Nuys, Valley Glen, Mission Hills, Sylmar, Sunland and Arleta.

In partnership with District 17, District 24, and Southern Cali-fornia World Service Public Outreach, District 21 helped de-velop a workshop called “What Next? Taking Your Al-Anon Program to the Next Level.” The event had incredible speak-ers which included Ricky B., a member who found Al-Anon while in prison, and Lupe, who carries the message to meetings in Juvenile Halls. People who attended discussed the obstacles to their outreach ideas and worked together to come up with practical ideas and how to move them forward.

And then there’s rotation of leadership! This is my last district report as District 21’s representative. Some thoughts as I end this three-year commitment…

I have learned so very much from serving in this position. I’ve learned that service is, most of all, a personal program tool. I grew up in a family riddled with people whose thinking and behavior dominated the family decision-making. Al-Anon service work and structure have helped me learn a new way to participate in group decision-making, one that’s made a difference in my family today.

When I first started in service quite a while ago, I thought I was supposed to bring the leadership skills I’d learned from my work life into Al-Anon to “accomplish” goals, to “make” Al-Anon “better.” Needless to say, in those early years, I got overwhelmed and frustrated and fled service beyond the group level. This time around, thanks to this service commit-ment and participating on a task force, I’ve learned that ser-vice work is as much about learning new ways to do things as it is about outcomes, it’s as much about the process and the product. For instance, I’ve learned to speak up even if I’m the minority voice – darned uncomfortable sometimes – while also completely letting go of the results, if not my feelings about the results. I’ve learned that the same action done for different reasons (control versus service, determined goal-grabbing vs curiosity about how my HP might show up in any meeting or discussion) are actually different actions. The re-sult? Service has become a much less stressful delight when I remember to keep the focus on myself and learning what I can from service. A big change from where I began!

I know you will all enjoy working with Stacey P as much as I have over the last three years.

all of the GRs and alternates in district 24. I was very proud of our teamwork and participation in 2017. Looking ahead to 2018, I would like to see a strong focus on AMAIS support and participation in our community. We have plans to visit several meetings in District 24 this year along with an Alateen mem-ber in order to allow them to speak directly on behalf of their program. I would also like to remind everyone that Alateen members are by default, Al-Anon members and that all Al-Anon groups are encouraged to invite Alateen members to speak or lead meetings. This can be facilitated through the district and our AMIAS in order to coordinate with the Alateen members.

District 24 will be hosting an AMIAS recertification workshop on March 17 from 10am-2pm at La Canada Presbyterian Church. There will be lunch provided. Anyone interested in serving Alateen who wants to join us should contact myself and our DAL, Layla. Our emails are at the bottom of this re-port.

Public Outreach:

We continue to supply our GRs copies of Al-Anon Faces Alco-holism to take back to their Groups so their members can work their own 12th Step in Carrying the Message.

Our Public Outreach person is still attending local Health Fairs and handing out Al-Anon information and the Al-Anon Faces Alcoholism booklets.

Most Groups are passing a “Forum Can” around at their meetings. They’ve been so successful that most members now have their own subscription and are writing “Newcomer” on their ticket.

Fundraisers:

In December, District 36 had our “Holiday Potluck” Fundraiser for the Colton Service Center. There was plenty of great dishes served and loads of deserts with coffee and tea for all who came; more than enough for all to enjoy.

We should be able to send a check to the Colton Service Center from this fundraiser in the amount of I’m hoping $700.00. As of this writing, I don’t have a final total but am certain that would be the minimum amount.

This year our format was a Panel of three participants, one each from Al-Anon, Alateen & A.A. Having all three Groups, helped bridge any gaps between the groups and their mem-bers. I have come to know and love many AA members and it’s due to events like this where we get to come together for a common goal in getting the message out there.

Group Concerns:

My personal Group Concern is getting all the Groups in this District to elect a GR and get their Meeting’s Voice & Vote out there…

My name is Chris C. and I am the District Representative for District 40.

For a year, District 42 has been having a meeting for the Spanish-speaking GRs separately for a few reasons. First, be-cause our LDC is not big enough to accommodate everyone at the same time. Second, because a few English-speaking GRs and officers were blatantly against approaching the Spanish-speakers. Third, because the Spanish-speakers can-not be there at the time the meeting has traditionally been held.

Yet, we made progress and even had a Spanish-speaking ver-sion of the annual Heart to Heart fundraising event, which was a success. We started small, but now that we did it, the Spanish-speaking GRS saw what worked and what didn’t will be better prepared to do it again. There was much fear as they have been traditionally unable to get together as a group. Each meeting host their own private celebrations. We discussed it and saw that although each meeting has autono-my and can hold celebrations any time they want to, it would be beneficial for all to work together to have an annual events. This year we had local speakers, but next year we already started to look for information on known speakers from other cities.

We were also able to create a committee responsible for the organization of the event, something we did not do this year. I have encouraged the bilingual GRs serve as co-officers. It has yet to happen but the seed is planted. Another step I took in integrating the district was to ask for their input on recommendations for the next DR. They said they would like very much if it was a bilingual person but did not make it a requirement, which to me was an amazing feat.

I honestly think we have accomplished a lot so far and will continue working on learning facts, addressing issues, and growing spiritually.

District 42 has now a new meeting in a town we had one be-fore but lost it. It is an amazing feeling, the one of expanding our program geographically.

What the district still struggles with is participation in the Assembly. We have 26 GRs and only five were at the Novem-ber Assembly. It is hard for me not to shame them about it, but I have been able to control myself. Still, I pray about it and already announced it once that we will have a business meeting to see how we can improve our meeting and district. In the next bulletin, I should have something to share about our investigation on what we can do to apply Al-Anon princi-ples in all of our affairs.

Service Manual Study: We’re continuing to study the Service Manual and the Concepts every month at the district. It’s been informative to read the Service Manual and share our experience, strength, and hope together .

Public Outreach projects continue to focus on increasing pub-lic awareness of the Al-Anon program, ordered 400 copies of the 2018 Al Anon Faces Alcoholism in English and in Spanish. The GRs and the DR are distributing these at other meetings and locations in the community like hospitals, schools, church-es, libraries and many other community services.

Our service board members are doing the KBDM workshop in the groups from district 48 area focused how to reach and informed group conscience.

This past year, our district held a wonderful Alathon, bought literature for meetings in need, bought and distributed litera-ture to libraries and professionals – Trying to get the message out that Al-Anon is here to help. I greeted newcomers at sev-eral meetings and next year ,I hope I can do the same. As I see it, my primary goal as our district’s representative is to sup-port the GRs. I have one more year to practice my goal of helping with the hand of Al-Anon to help those facing the dis-ease of Alcoholism.

District 57 is planning our 11th Annual Alathon for February 10, 2018 at Mayfair Park in Lakewood. We are looking forward to a day of celebrating recovery with members of our fellowship.

Our district continues in our Public Outreach efforts providing speakers on a regular basis to recovery centers in our area. Our members participate as speakers in sharing their experi-ence, strength, and hope to families affected by the disease of alcoholism. At our last District meeting, we explored some ways to expand our public outreach efforts. We have been dis-cussing a possible partnership with a neighboring district in a campaign for the public using the ‘road signs’ from WSO.

Our Beginner’s meetings are continuing with members co-leading the six week series. Many newcomers continue to attend providing a welcome affirmation of our purpose of sup-porting newcomers to our fellowship.

This is my last entry as the District Representative for District 57 as my term is over at the end of this year. Our GRs elected a new slate of officers for the next three years. The DR position has been a remarkable journey in my Al-Anon service, and I have learned a great deal in my service commitment.

Thank you for letting me be of service, Martha Z., DR

Our focus has been on two objectives: member education and public outreach.

In addition to our ongoing “Service Manual” study sessions at district meetings, we have presented a Nov. 11 workshop de-signed to focus on Alateen as a part of the Al-Anon program and we have scheduled a May 12 workshop that takes its theme from our outreach magazine’s new title, “Help and Hope.”

More than 40 members from District 60 and other nearby dis-tricts attended he “How Al-Anon and Alateen Work Together for Family Recovery” workshop. Alternate District Representa-tive Belinda H., with assistance from GR Tannis S., planned the event, which included an Alateen and Al-Anon parent duo, an Alateen and Al-Anon grandparent duo, a panel of former Alateens who have transitioned to Al-Anon, and an Alateen sponsor who spoke and took questions from the audience.

The District’s eighth annual workshop will be at Trinity Episco-pal Church, Orange.

A pilot project, of outreach to families of those who have been cited for alcohol-abuse issues, has been launched with the Fullerton Police Department. Coordinated by AGR Lucia M., the

project involves introducing patrol officers to Al-Anon and its long history of helping those affected by others’ drinking, then providing them with packets of literature to give to families. The District prepared 500 packets of material to help families assess how alcohol has affected them. It is anticipated that other law enforcement agencies may also be asked to partici-pate in the project.

Belinda H., Alternate District Representative, also is investi-gating the possibility of arranging to distribute Al-Anon litera-ture through the local drug court, which also addresses alcohol abuse cases.

Also as an outreach project, the District has distributed 725 copies of Al-Anon’s outreach magazine, “Help and Hope”, (formerly titled “Al-Anon Faces Alcoholism”).

It has been a very busy year for District 66. We have been focusing on Public Outreach this year and hosted a Public Out-reach Workshop in August. The Workshop was well attended and everyone was excited about carrying the message to oth-ers. We plan to host another Workshop in 2018.

In October, we held our annual District workshop. This year we changed the format and invited guest speakers from Southern California. The workshop was a big success and very well attended. We plan to host a similar workshop next year with a focus on Alateen and Public Outreach.

Public Outreach projects continue to focus on increasing pub-lic awareness of the Al-Anon program. Al-Anon Faces Alcohol-ism was distributed in both Spanish and English to medical offices, libraries, rehab facilities and anywhere we may leave them. We also placed literature racks at several AA meetings and refill with literature as needed. We are partnering with District 57 on several projects with a goal to reach a larger audience.

Last year we started a six-week Beginner’s meeting series modeled after District 57. There is both a day and evening meeting and participation continues to grow each session. The meetings have been well received and very successful. A num-ber of members that attended the series recommend it to others and comment they wish there were Beginner’s meetings when they started Al-Anon.

Finally, additional Outreach Projects will be launched next year and we will be hosting an AMIAS Certification workshop as well. Stay tuned!

Many thanks to the District 75 GRs and Current Mailing Ad-dresses for their service to District 75. With 49 groups, there is a lot to do in order to fill the need as the link between the groups and the SCWS/WSO. (D75) welcomed three new Group Representatives (GR) and continues to make presentations to encourage “dark” meetings to elect a GR.

Our Fall Workshop, “Recovery Roundtable, A Day of Fellowship and Fun”, was a big success. Evaluations by participants showed a positive response and lots of topics for next year’s workshop. Attendees purchased more literature as a result of attending the breakouts on “Growing Alateen” and “Conflict Resolution Using the Traditions” which used CAL in their presentation. We are also looking forward to holding a Public Outreach Workshop with SCWS support during next spring and have invited District 72 and the local Intergroup Service Board and Information Service Reps to join us.

We are looking for a new secretary and plan to elect an Alter-nate District Rep soon.

Wow! Another year has gone by and like John Lennon’s Christ-mas song say, “…and what have you done?” Well, District 78 went to all SCWS Assembly and Committee meetings, we had exchange meetings every month, along with delicious food, the district met once a month, we had workshops. We faced issues, we solved issues and continue to work and the do the best we can one day at a time. On our last district meeting we shared the results that took place at the Voting Assembly, the long

conversation with the World Service Office. We used the ‘clickers’ almost all voting was done by noon.

This year is my last one as a DR for our district, and unfortu-nately we do not have a new DR. On a good note, we will con-tinue to work doing Public Outreach, and we already sched-uled a meeting date for 2018. Plus I downloaded the Public Outreach ‘work’ book and made copies for each of the four groups. Then we shared on the Lois’ 1973 article The 12 Gifts; it was very nice to hear each personal sharing. We closed the year with traditional Mexican dinner of tamales, beans, salad, buñuelos, and champurrado. I would like to thank the GRs & Alternates, Betty S., Tina, Reyna, Lety G.; in the district: Lidia, Treasurer, Rosita C., Public Outreach, Gloria V., Literature, and all the members for their help and support. District 78 wants to thank Panel 55 for all of their hard work, and commitment to service, we welcome Panel 58 and wish them the very best for the next three years.

Thanks to everyone for their help, Patricia A.

Wow!
