The Feast of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross

The Feast of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross is the last one of the five major feasts of the Armenian Apostolic Church. It is the most important feast among the feasts dedicated to the Holy Cross, as it is dedicated to the history of the return of the Holy Cross from imprisonment, its elevation and glorification. In the Armenian Apostolic Church, the Feast of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross is celebrated on Sunday during the period between September 11-17. This year, that date is September 17, and the Monday following the Feast is a Memorial Day.

In 610 A. D, the Persian King Khosrov with a large army attacks theByzantine Empire. Enthusiastic about the initial victory, in 614 A. D. the Persian army enters Jerusalem. Many people are killed and many are imprisoned. Pontiff Zakaria, the Patriarch of Jerusalem is imprisoned, too. However, the Persians are not satisfied and enter the Church of Holy Sepulcher and take the Holy Cross kept in the Church. The Holy Cross had been found and installed in the Church for the Christians to worship by Heghineh, the mother of the King Costandianos, in the beginning of the 4th century.

In 628 A. D., the Byzantine army led by the King Herakles fight against the Persians to return the Holy Cross. The Armenian army regiment, led by Mzhezh Gnounie, supported the Persian army. With the Lord’s help the Byzantine army wins the battle. The Holy Cross is solemnly brought to the Armenian town Karin, from where it is carried to Constantinople, and then - to Jerusalem. On the way the Holy Cross was raised for the people to see and worship.

For Christians the Cross is God’s power and strength and pride of allprides, on which Christ’s innocent blood was shed. By means of the Cross, Jesus proved His love towards mankind, and the Cross became for us the symbol of hope, love and saving.

Church Member SpotlightVarteni Yerjanian

Varteni was born in Beirut, Lebanon to Garabed and Anahid Partamian. Because both of her parents were from Marash (now located in Turkey after the 1915 Armenian Genocide), Varteni considers herself a "24 Karat Marash-tzee." She was raised with her two brothers, Levon and Vatche, and was surrounded by her large family, consisting of uncles, aunts and over 35 first cousins. Varteni was named after her paternal grandmother, but feels lucky to have known both of her grandmothers.

Varteni attended the A.G.B.U. Yervant Demirjian Armenian Elementary School where she learned four different languages (Armenian, Arabic, English and French). She then attended Beirut Evangelical School for Girls for middle and high school. Varteni went on to Beirut University College (B.U.C.) to earn her A.A.S. degree in Computer Science, and then graduated from the Lebanese University with a Bachelors Degree in English Language and Literature. She accomplished all of this while working full time in Dar El Handasah, an Engineering firm. Before immigrating to the United States in 1986, she worked in the Business Office of Beirut University College.

After coming to the United States in March of 1986, Varteni met and married Nerses Yerjanian. They reside in Pasadena and have been blessed with their son Armand. After Armand's Baptism, he received a special blessing from the Catholicos of All Armenians, Karekin I at Holy Etchmiadzin.

Varteni has been an avid traveler all of her life. She has vacationed in many places such as Damascus, Aleppo, Jerusalem, Jordan, Egypt, Holland, Belgium, Paris, Greece, Cyprus, just to name a few. She has traveled to Armenia five times and states, "I get nourished from the soil and water of our forefathers."

Varteni was raised in the Armenian Church and attended Sunday School. She continues to serve the Church in many ways and has been an active member of St. Gregory the Illuminator Church for many years. She taught Sunday School for four years; has been on Parish Council for two years, serving as the secretary; she has served as the ACYO Liaison and arranged taking and serving food at Union Station in Pasadena, arranged monthly meetings, activities with other ACYO chapters, and Bible studies.

Since 1995, Varteni has worked for the San Gabriel Valley Council Boy Scouts of America as their Membership Registrar. Before that, she worked in an administrative position at the L.A. Clasps d.b.a. Novita. Varteni has been actively involved in the A.G.B.U. Scouting movement since coming to Southern California. She has been a member of the San Fernando Valley Chapter, Glendale Chapter, and currently the Pasadena Chapter since 1991. She is also involved in different cultural and social committees such as Young Ladies, Hayortatz, Zemire Operetta, Babayan Himnark Azkaneviroum.

Varteni continues to diligently attend and serve our church every Sunday, along with her husband and son. Most of the time you will find her at the front door with her lovely smile, greeting the many church goers. She quotes, "I feel privileged to live in Southern California where as an American Armenian, I am free to worship and practice my Christian faith, take pride in my Armenian heritage, culture and language, work and promote the scouting movement with the values that it upholds, and proudly say that I am a worldly woman that has equal rights and can freely praise God."
